The Covers Project builds “chains” of cover tracks

Written by roxeteer on April 18, 2002 to .

The Covers Project is an interesting concept of collecting a database of cover songs and then building “chains” of them. As their introduction says, a “cover chain is a set of songs in which each song is a cover of a song by the band who covered the preceding song.”

There are no Roxette songs found yet, but I added Per’s Ramones cover “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” to the database. Every few hours the system builds new chains starting from each of the artist in the database. Currently, the longest chain is 40 songs.

Update: It seems that the algorithm creating the chains had a bug and mixed up the band making the original song and the band covering it. Now it’s fixed. Unfortunately this also means that Per’s cover chain shortened from 30 to 1…

Hmmm, strange... don’t know whether t works like this or if you (or them) have messed it up :)
It reads: “The Per Gessle song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” was covered by Ramones”

When I think it should read: “The Ramones song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” was covered by Per Gessle”

Yup, it’s screwed up... no matter, this chain is going to die anyway... the bands at the bottom are pretty obscure...

Hmm... that’s true. And now they seem to have changed it. Now the chain is one (1) cover long... Grr.

ummm yeh true
but hmmm exactly.... did he write it for her? or he just had that song and choosed it for her....?

I don’t see the point of this thing...

j_karlsson2: If you mean that you don’t understand the point of The Covers Project, you’re probably not the only one. It’s a project made by people with a database and a scripting language and too much free time - nothing more.

Sounds like me when I coded The Daily Roxette... :-)

Well..... let’s say you like to collect all Roxette covers made...... that will be a good source of info......
