“Den ständiga resan” covered

Written by Anarem on February 13, 2008 to and .

Marie Fredriksson's song "Den ständiga resan" has been covered by Swedish metal band Opeth for its latest album "Watershed." However, the song doesn't seem to make it to the album, according to Opeth's site.

As it seems to me that Opeth sings in English by the title of their songs. So if Opeth covered Marie’s “Den Ständiga Resan” would they have recorded it in English or Swedish? and as Anarem stated it doesn’t seem to have made it onto the album, maybe it’s on the ablum as what’s called a ghost track.

A metal band covering Marie’s beautiful “Den Ständiga Resan”
Only the thought makes afwul shivers come over my body.

I would like to hear that version!

Yeah, me too, shine! Sounds cool.

It’s funny to go on the Opeth forums, because over there, all the death metal heads are scratching their heads over this one as well. “No really, the chick from Roxette?!”

We should wait and see until the new album is released. I’ve listened to some Opeth tracks on iTunes, and it might just be a perfect match. I also think it will be a wonderful opportunity for those who have a preconceived notion about “the chick from Roxette” to have their eyes opened, and see how much Marie’s music can transcend all sorts of genres, and how much she has contributed not just to Swedish music, but to music in general.

“Où sont mes pantalons?”

not really into metal but intersting if it’s about this cover. well, let us know when the track’s available to download from somewhere

I’m really curious about this one too... I think it could work, as long as it stays a ballad! I mean, I could picture it coming out like a Metallica ballad (like “Nothing Else Matters”) or something... that wouldn’t be bad at all. I think the really interesting thing is that they even know the song at all! It’s not like it was a big radio hit or something!

My favourite Marie-song. hope they didnt destroy it.

It’s in Swedish.

looking forward to it! The singer has a cool deep voice (you have to have a good voice to sing like that!) and the stuff I heard from them is just ... heavy! I love guitars!

Interesting,I like to listen how does souns Marie’s lonely song in heavy metal.it would be fanny i think, to hear how metalists are screaming den standiga resan instead of Maries sad and beauty voice. but some of remakes I like in hard rock,or in metal,I think Chris Isaac’s old and perfect song ”wicked game” is not a bad when Him are singing and rocking ; ) -”world was on fire noyone could save me but you...”

I’d also like to hear it!

Gessle: Det spelar ingen roll vad som skrivs, bara bilden är bra :D

as you can tell im a metal fanatic, and this will probably be my only post on this site.
I am familiar with roxette and marie, my brother was/is a huge fan of.
and i am a huge fan of Opeth, and they are not just metal they are progressive metal, look up the term.
and i want to say that this really came as a surprise, but you could almost see it happening at some point
i have not heard the “Den ständiga resan” original or the cover yet
but i will in due time.
if you want an idea of what to expect download some tracks off an album called Damnation, it is a very sophisticated album and full of nice songs.
If you want to hear their heavier side then venture into Blackwater Park or even ghost revries.

Opeth rock socks into hybernation, and thats it from me Enjoy!!!!

@joemetal: if you are still reading this: give Marie Fredriksson’s solo a try. It’s really worth it :)

ill prolly download the this song but thats prolly as far as ill go but, ya never know i could end up in love with the original and have a need for more ;)

@joemetal: Thanks for coming on here to share your thoughts with us. Obviously we have very different tastes in music, but it’s great that so many people on both sides are willing to keep an open mind and see what happens. I’m really excited to hear this, myself, and will be watching for the special edition of “Watershed” or wherever the extra tracks show up. Music is music, and Marie should feel flattered that such a well-known band in the metal community is willing to risk its reputation by recording one of her songs. I’m sure they’ll do it justice!

i’m listening to it right now off the special edition of opeth’s new album and it’s really, really well done. opeth is not your run of the mill metal band; they blend folk and progressive elements into their music and their singer has an amazing singing voice and does death metal vocals as well. the way they blend beautiful soft passages with death metal is their trademark. this cover is all acoustic with a bit of bluesy guitar and clean vocals in swedish... so you guys have nothing to be afraid of, haha.

and for the record, i think opeth is one band in the metal scene who could care less if recording a song like this tarnishes their “metal reputation”. they’re above all of that.

so wanna hear it :)

It is more than obvious that you have no idea about Opeth and their music. I suggest you should just listen to the track, and keep your shivers to yourself. Do not get frightened by the label ”metal band” ; try not to condemn sth without knowing it. If you dare, listen to the Opethian version and you will change your mind about this evil, bad, shivery metal thing... Cheers! [email protected]

See what you think. Hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Opeth aren’t your run-of-the-mill Metal band.

It’s a bonus track on a special edition of Watershed... I was impressed with every cover I heard Opeth do (ie Would by Alice in chains, Bridge of sighs by Robin Trower, Circle of the Tyrants etc.). But Opeths original stuff is the most intricate music I Know of. I know people think heavy music with growling sucks, but more than half of their stuff is clean toned with really killer vocals. They definately have more diversity and skill than most other bands.
