Live DVD - who's decision??

I’ve recently been listening to alot of live Roxette recordings and have really wanted to watch one of the old concert vids, but i’ve only got them on VHS and don’t have a VHS player - only DVD.
I’m just wondering, who’s decision would it be to re-release the old concert videos (Live-Ism & Crash!Boom!Live!) on DVD? And why haven’t they done it already?
I’m assuming it’s basically up to EMI, although i’m sure Per would have a say about it of course.
The only reason I see that they haven’t is that they believe that there isn’t the financial incentive, considering the relatively small number of Roxette fans that would be buying it.
I’m still hoping that they do something soon. *fingers crossed*

it also has to do with distribution rights, i believe live ism’s right belong to a now out of business branch of emi, and live in johannesburg’s rights belong to a tv station. many times too the master tapes have degraded so badly that a transition to dvd is not possible

“The master tapes have degraded so badly that a transition to dvd is not possible”
A lot of movies from the 60’s and the 70’s have been restored and re-released on DVD. So, I don’t think that’s a problem at all! Even “ABBA in concert”, that was shoot in 1979, was released on DVD in 2004. If a master tape has survived for 25 years, I don’t think Live-ism or CBLive master tapes (16 and 12 year old respectively) are that demaged.

Both concerts were released on Laser disc, so there is a digital copy of them... the conversion to a dvd format wouldn’t be a problem

Laser discs are analog, no digital.
From Wikipedia:
“Laserdisc is an analog format, unlike the modern CD or DVD which are digital formats. Both formats are pressed with pits and lands making up the structure of the disc. On a digital audio CD (or DVD) the pits and lands will signify binary codes; with a Laserdisc, the pits and lands are created using frequency modulation of an analog signal.
Laserdiscs use only analog video and almost always carry some form of analog audio”.

As Room_service said the quality of the master tapes wouldn’t be the problem. There are plenty of other concerts/tv shows/movies etc released on DVD that are alot older than any of the Rox VHS concerts. At worst they could do another VHS/Laserdisc -> DVD transfer, not amazing but i’m sure it can be remastered to look quite good.
So it seems what it may come down to something similar to the MTV unplugged situation, EMI/Roxette being willing to go to the trouble of getting the rights to release them, getting them restored/remastered to a decent quality (not like the other Rox DVD releases) and market them.

Wouldn’t the parent company get the rights to whatever they had. (Just speculating, i don’t know how these things work.)

Yeah, it’s a bit silly to think that we’ve now gone through 3 video hits DVD compilations and have yet to see any of their concerts, other than MTV Unplugged, on DVD! Since EMI seems to go the easy way out with Roxette all it has to do is transfer the old VHS to DVD, compress the hell out of it, and poof, on the market it goes - just like it did with the video hits DVDs. I don’t see what the problem is. We all know that EMI won’t be bothered with actual video/audio DVD upgrading! Well, at least when it comes to Roxette.

I’ve always wondered why Roxette hasn’t released their concerts as DVDs? And my dream is: Live-ism and Crash!Boom!Live! DVDs with extra material.

Live-ism is not that good, it was edited too much. I’d prefer “Live in Zurich”, that’s a much more complete concert.

Live-ism is the worst Roxette performance ever and should have never been released in the first place, it’s pure shame.

I like anything that Roxette puts out in terms of live concert stuff. Only chance I’ll ever see em perform, so I ain’t gonna bitch :o)

Just for the record,
Shooting video is very different from shooting a movie. Magnetic video tapes do degrade fast, while movies are shot on film which is a very different and more stable format. Don’t compare movies from the 60’s or 70’s to video recordings from the 80’s / early 90’s.
And as I read on the internet that ABBA In Concert DVD was shot originally on film as well, and it’s a kind of documentary for TV (which were normally shot on film, before the HDTV craze), instead of a concert as broadcasted on TV.

Well as far as i can remember, Even Bon Jovi’s vhs as never been re-released and we are talking about a band who is stil touring and sold out everywhere....so the popularity doesn’t matter..! i think it’s up to EMI to decide if its worthy...!
