according to a new article in german newspaper SPIEGEL http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,330950,00.html music industry gets worse and worse...
ronan keating sold in germany 214 pieces of his new album and was top 100 (!) ...
eminem had platinum after just a few days BUT there are all the albums counted which were shipped to the music stores ... in the first week eminem was number 1 with 38.000 cds sold ...
they discuss about the sense of a top 100 chart ranking in days like these ...
so my strategy would be:
why don’t record companys buy in the first two weeks a lot of albums of their artists to get top 5? they would have a good promotion and radio would play the song in heavy rotation without stupid voitings of their listeners. i think this would be a better investement than printing posters for music stores and produceing giveaways like shampoos and soaps ;)
[oops ... i just read this “strategy” is not allowed – ok, understandable :]
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS NEWS?

Every album in the Top 75 charts in the UK sold over 10000 copies last week. The CD industry is still thriving here....especially over the xmas period, CDs fly out the shops....the same cant be said about singles though.

Maybe I can sort this out...
Charts are made up of how many copies are sold IN the stores (i.e: bought by actual customers and brought home).
However, Gold/Platinum certifications are made (in everywhere but the US) on the basis of how many copies went on the shelves of the stores...
:
And, yes, the UK record industry is booming this year... the record store I work in has been rushed off it’s feet since September! I’ve had to pull in who knows how many extra shifts in the last few weeks. Albums are doing great (unfortunately, not many of the good ones), but very few singles being sold though... Brian McFadden’s “Real To Me” got to #1 in the UK singles chart after selling only 25,500 copies... (I have regular access to a tonne of sales information).

Occasionally there are...
But, chances are, you’d have better luck finding a new single on Vinyl than you would on Casette...

Hmm, here in Germany it gets worse, on the other hand 2004 is a a record-breaking year for albums in the UK... Don’t know what to think! But I’m not sure if these numbers can be right, even Marie must have sold more than that in Germany!
