Laptop vs. Desktop?

17 replies

I know that more than a few of you here are technologically inclined; I’m looking to buy a new computer in the next few weeks (presently have a 3 year-old desktop) and I’m wondering if I should cave into the fad and buy a laptop. I like the idea of being able to watch my DVDs wherever I want, but don’t like the idea of having a thief easily make off with my laptop (and all my info). Any ideas?

I think it depends on how you want to use the computer. I have a laptop at work because I travel and it is so convenient. However, I have a desktop at home, which was cheaper and does everything the laptop does, except I cannot take it with me.

To me - the laptop is more convenient, but the desktop is more powerful

@Shane:

How do you find the keyboard on the laptop? Are they a bit too small, compared to a regular keyboard? Are they easily breakable?

I’d like to have a laptop very much. But that thing that you use instead of the mouse is so tricky :s

I would have said desktop this morning.... but this afternoon been playing on my uncle laptop and it is wicked with pen 4 and a cool optical mouse... really fast!!

@Santi:

I totally agree with you, playing Minesweeper with that thingy is a pain in the ass... I think I just like the idea of being able to watch my Roxette DVD wherever I want– to the beach, on a fishing trip... but honestly, they are pretty darn expensive! So maybe shelling out for a more powerful desktop (for a lower price, yet) isn’t too bad, either...

If you’re looking for a good laptop I suggest buying the Panasonic Toughbook, they’re supposed to be unbreakable. They say if you throw it off a building (I don’t know how high up) the computer will still work after hitting the ground.

The keyboard is okay - I connect a normal keyboard and use it when I am at my desk, so only use the laptop keyboard when traveling - not difficult to adjust and have not yet had any “breakdowns”.

@Shane:

Is it true that if you have a laptop on your lap for a while, it warms up so much that it actually *burns* your lap? Sorry for all the wacky questions, pal!

the laptop gets warm, but mine surely doesn’t burn my lap!! I’ve been working on it for three hours now but can still have it in my lap.
I looooove my laptop (far better then a desktop.) :)

Well, I just bought a laptop 2 months ago and I LOVE IT! The desktop computer I was using before was 4 years old. I got a Toshiba Satellite notebook - 60 GB hard drive, 2.4 GHz, CD/DVD-RW. It’s a huge upgrade from the desktop, and it comes in a compact size. It’s nice being able to listen to online radio stations in my room with wireless cable connectivity as well. Plus, I get to watch DVDs wherever I want. I paid $1699.00 after rebates - and got lucky because it went on sale a month later for $1299.00. So I got a refund. Not too bad.

@Jason:

Hoo boy, that’s about $1800 Canadian, quite a pretty penny... then you add taxes and insurance... wow, that’s going to smart. But I’m guessing from all the responses, it’s pretty worth it...

@Sparroweye:

Good to know that laptops don’t burn you... I suppose I could just set it on a table in that event :-)

I never noticed my laptop getting too hot. I rarely have it on my lap though - usually have it on a table, desk, airplane seat tray, etc. When I shut it down, it feels warm, but never really hot.

Hmmm... I have both.

Generally I like the Desktop better. Nice sized keyboard, bigger monitor (though now a days you can get a HUGE LCD screen on laptops).

Laptops can feel a bit hot after a little while if you have them right on your lap.

If you want an actual keyboard or a mouse for a laptop you can buy them and just attach it to the back or there is a port that you can purchase that attaches to the back of the laptop to which you can hook up the devices. This does depend on the laptop.. etc.

Problem I see with laptops is just the general lack of space to put shit. Most of the devices need to be external where as a desktop (tower) you have slots to install more internal drives... etc.

Memory wise you’d be surprised how good laptops are doing. And they are very sturdy. I take care of mine like it’s a child because it looks like it can break easily but actually, it won’t. I know because a relative sat on it and the sucker is working perfectly fine.

What I do.. I work from home... so everything of mine that is work related or music realated (MP3, my studio... etc) runs off my desktop. the Gesslegirls webpage, Photoshop and all of my fun stuff (Mp3s etc) I have a copy of on the Laptop and use that at night when I am laying in bed watching TV.

Also, if you work on the road or travel a lot... get a laptop. You can work on a plane or generally you can go anywhere with it. Just put up some cash on a decent sized and well padded carry case. Make sure it has enough space for a printer, any external drives, cables and extra battteries.

Laptop I could not give mine up now, I would not go back to desktop.

Anarem: You keep saying you want it so you can watch your roxette DVD elsewhere. Why not look into a personal DVD player? And you could get a pretty decent desktop as well, for the price you’d pay for a laptop alone.

No, it’s not just for DVD watching– I’m looking to upgrade to a newer computer because I find that the one I have now just isn’t cutting it anymore. I really like the idea of portability; I could work on a project while taking the bus to work, and play computer games at the cottage on a rainy day... I’m still pondering it.

Now, as for the resolution on laptops– do most people view it at 800 x 600, or 1024 x 768, or at a another resolution?

My friend, my friends brother, my boss and I all have it at 600 x 800.

It depends on the size of the screen and on how you want to view things.

It’s nice to have it with an internal DVD (I’ll get one eventually LOL!) however, if you are going to travel with it, make sure you got a good battery. Some laptops come with crappy batteries. As per my experience, they don’t last more than a couple hours. I am sure there are battreries with a longer life, but you’re gonna have to shell out some cash.
