Dear Per, an opened letter for you from a fan
minoga said on June 18, 2003 22:45:
Dear Per,
I’m writing you concerning your angry about people downloading your songs from the net.
Premise: I’m 33 and I’m a record collector (Abba-Roxette-Ace Of Base-Alcazar among others).
1) Do you know the price of a cd? Well it’s about 21 euro. A teenager gets about 10-15 euro per week (at least the richest), do you think they waste it on a cd? Wrong, they spend it having fun with friends.
2) The taxes are very high? Wrong again cos if you take them away the cd will always costs about 15-16 euro and that’s too much.
3) Moreover, there’s a new fashion among the record companies: re-releasing the same album 2-3-4 times not after 10 years but during the same year putting 1 or two new songs on it (Ace Of Base released 2 different versions of their first cd -Alcazar released 4 different versions of their first cd). And what if I bought the first version? Do I have to buy them all to have all their songs? Is this right for you?
4) Same for the releasing of a cd: Ace Of Base released their last album (Da capo) 1 year ago but it’s not yet out in my country nor in many others, same for Alcazar. Is this right for you?
5) I buy every cd you release (also the swedish ones) but the latest don’t work in stereo-car, why? Cos Emi protected it against piracy, but they are already on the net so why do I have to buy a cd that doesn’t work in my stereo car? Moreover if I buy a cd I have (not I should) the right to do my own compilation (with tapes you can do that, which is the difference?) but it’s impossible.
6) Emi released Roxette’s greatest hits video on DVD, and I was so happy but it doesn’t work on all Dvd Players (mine too) so why do I have to buy an original while I could have a copy that works better?
7) I always wanted original cds cos the booklets with its lyrics and the package etc but lately also these part is away. Take Madonna or Kylie for example: their cd’s booklets have only photos (Madonna’s one has awful photos). I have to admit: Roxette never deluded me (Dvd and stereo car apart) all your cds are great but 4 greatest hits in 8 years....
8) Also the singles have their part, to tell you the truth more parts: cd 1-cd 2-cd 3, while they shoud be sold with only a song or with an unreleased one but not with 85 remixes of the same song, at max 1 euro.
I know that you’re thinking: the doctor didn’t invite you to have all the songs from a group/singer
and that could be true but the companies must stop to steal money from the people selling non sense cd or dvd.
It’s up to you Per: Make the difference!
Bye
Mino

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah. that’s right.
but when i was younger, parents gave me 10 euros. 10 euros per month....
and people are angry when others download music from the net.. for me 5 euros for cd is too much. i can’t afford it.

I see it like this.
If I have a copple of friends over and I put on the cd and they go woooohhh ....good music...can you make a copy for me. I do ... so then those 5 friends go home and they do the same and their friends like the cd as well and also wants a copy ...they make one for their friend ....well ,so far that is legal.
So what I want to know is ...why this fuzz about filesharing on internet? Isn’t that the same thing ,exept that i dont know the person i share it with?
I for instance ,live in the Us and I love a lot of Per Gessles old music , flickorna på tv 2 ,and sommartider and so on... and I bought those on a vinyl a long time ago .... and I can’t just go the the store here in the Us and by it on a cd ...so i can download it instead. Don’t get me wrong ...I do by cd’s but some things you can’t get a hold of , thats when this possability is good ...

WHY WAS THIS MOVED TO OFF-TOPIC?
Sometimes tevensso is a mystery to me.

Guys...
Some of you really, *really* have to start letting up on Thomas a little bit. He is a part of a team that is trying to provide this wonderful (and free) service to you, and to suggest that he’s operating in a manner that’s any less than sincere and proper is really ludicrous. Once in a while, we all have to remember to think before automatically rebelling against TPTB.
He has to be one of the kindest, fun, most diligent and purely selfless people I’ve ever met, and he doesn’t have a SINGLE mean/devious bone in his body. He is absolutely the OPPOSITE of what some of the naysayers on this board are making him out to be. I’ve known him since 1995 (and have had the pleasure of his company in three different countries), and he’s done more for the Roxette community than the majority of record company contacts I’ve known over a decade. I swear, those passing judgment are just getting it wrong (whether on purpose or not). Honest.
Now some of you don’t know me from a hole in the wall, and some of you won’t take a stranger like me as seriously as I’d hope to be taken (heh), but please think before you write what you do. Common sense, that. You all seem cool and fairly supportive of those around you. :) I suppose it’s become far too normal (and almost expected) for members of society to instantly question the motives and actions of those ’in authority’ (for lack of a better term) without remembering that they, too, have feelings. As we all know (but too often fail to remember), misunderstandings often arise from people dealing with each other over the Internet, since we’re all dealing with different languages and interpretations and the frequent lack of emotion/emphasis in the written word. Think on that, too.
This is the only word I’ll say on this subject, and I’m dearly sorry to have taken your time up with my blatherings. I just felt the need to stick up for a friend in a rational and sane manner. Any of you would do the same for your buddies, I would certainly hope. :)
Cheers,
Lana
PS I actually haven’t spoken with Thomas recently, so I don’t know how he feels on this subject. ...just to let you know that these are my feelings above, and not necessarily his. :)

@Lanzie: Yeah, whatever, but what does a thread with this name “Dear Per, an opened letter for you from a fan” in off-topic?
Does it have anything to do with how nice is Thomas? Nice people make mistakes too, and Thomas places too many rox-related threads in Off-topic. I’m not judging him as person now, just as moderator.

I´m ABSOLUTELY AGREE with the opened letter, to Per and to anyone who works for music industry. About Thomas, none says nothing about him, just the opposite: don´t know none who works so hard for the rox comunity, but if Per enters the site, hardly he will read this in an off-topic place.
A hug for all.

Thank you very much folks.
It’s very hard to make people understand what you really mean while you write something but it happened with all of you.
I don’t understand the off topic too but who cares, you read it and probably also someone else and so... Here’s another question is there a fixed version of the dvd greatest hits?
Thanx 4 your help
Bye
Mino

sometimes people forget that it is not only Thomas moderating in this forum ;)

You’re totally right, Mino. And I don’t understand the reason they released the POP HITS and THE BALLAD HITS independently.
They could have edited ONLY ONE Roxette album with the new songs, don’t you think? If there is an oprtunity to earn twice the money recording the less songs as possible they do, of course.
Stormkeeper said on June 18, 2003 23:00:
good Mino,
agreed totally.
Record companies are killing themselves.
