I’m listening to some live recordings from almost 5 years ago of my old band. You can listen to them too if you like - the links to them are through their site (which I made) - http://groups.msn.com/Supertrip :)
P.S. The band’s name was Supertrip, and I’m aware that there is another band of that name, somewhere. But we didn’t know until after the band split up. :-/

Anyway, why don’t you download the song to find it out. It is a song from a Gwyneth Paltrow movie “Great Expectations”.
————–
Anyway, a song I’m currently listening to right now is “David Duchovny” by: Bree Sharp. Which is actually quite good.
Any X-Files fan here??? This Bree Sharp lady is a big fan of David D that she wrote a song about him.
powerpoplarry said on February 23, 2003 10:06:
In what Stormkeeper was asking about, Mono are an English male/female electronic duo, and “Life In Mono” was their biggest hit off their only album “Formica Blues”, from 1996. The song is a masterpiece, one of the best singles of the 90s, and the album, “Formica Blues”, as a whole is pretty grand, not just the 1 song, but all the cuts on it. Another similar band I love is Solar Twins. These duos follow the example set by acts like Eurythmics, when they were electronic-based.
Stormkeeper said on February 23, 2003 10:35:
Oh, thanks guys. I love Electronica so I should check it out soon. Some folks at work played some Air and it sounded very interesting. I was only familiar with “Sexy Boy” before I think.
Do you know Olive? Is it real Electronica? I suppose you´re familiar with big hit You´re Not Alone which ATB made trance version of recently. Great song.

powerpoplarry said on February 24, 2003 10:03:
Um yes, Stormkeeper, Olive is another similar group. They released a second album on Maverick, Madonna’s label, called “Trickle” I think, which was just as great. Um, plus, their singer Ruth Ann, she contributed vocals to some cuts on Enigma’s 4th album “The Screen Behind The Mirror” from 2000, including the singles “Gravity Of Love” and “Silence Must Be Heard”.
i_jera said on February 24, 2003 10:09:

powerpoplarry said on February 25, 2003 01:15:
No, SMBH was not an actual single, to me, it was an evolving of Sandra’s song/single “I Need Love” from “Close To Seven”, don’t you agree?? Anyhoo, the song was on their hits collection “LSD” (my initials, actually!!). I am a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Sandra Cretu fan, she is just so so beautiful, my dreamgirl, but she is happily taken!! I collect her stuff, and “Wheel Of Time” is a grower. For the longest time, I was VERY disappointed with it, but I really like it now. I like anything those 2 have ever touched, I have 2 videotapes of videoclips, TV interviews, TV performances, etc, that someone sent me from South Africa and I had converted to NTSC, just wish there would be a videos DVD of Sandra stuff. And also ARABESQUE (Sandra’s girlgroup from 1979-1984)!!!! Michael Cretu is a musical GOD to me!! I love his stuff too, Enigma, TAAW, solo pre-Enigma, Moti Special, everyone he ever produced!! I’m trying to collect EVERYTHING, and I have a nice amount, but I’m missing so much more!!

@Powerpoplarry: Yeah, you’re right. Of course I know about Ian Curtis’ suicide. And I find it really amazing how they could go on after that and form New Order... you’d think they’d be even more depressed, but I find New Order’s music rather positive. They’re a great band, too.:) Do you know whether they’re working on a new album?
StupidGirl said on June 2, 2003 20:24:

Jackie, LOL!!! Um yes, StupidGirl, Joy Division was probably THE most depressing band out there, but they were quite cathartic and burrowed their way into the hearts + minds of tons of fans + musicians.
Honestly, you couldn’t get more dark and depressing than JD, so when Ian left this place, really, for the others, the only way was up, positive, couldn’t get any lower, emotionally, so yes, New Order was up, dancey + positive, but retaining the honesty and awkwardness of their JD days. New Order are loved as much and considered as influential as Joy Division, they are mentioned in the same breath.

I haven’t heard any of the Mazarin samples either, sniff, but I am excited by them, as 1 song I hear is like Blondie’s “Atomic”, which is SUCH a cool classic song!! If I ever see Debbie Harry around (met her about 3 times), I will inform her about her influence on Per. I hung out with another of his influences a few times, Joey Ramone.
Today, my list of stuff I heard was as follows:
Roxette: “The Pop Hits”
The Thorns: “The Thorns” (Matthew Sweet’s new project/sideband with Shawn Mullins + Pete Droge)
The Sounds: “Living In America”
Hepburn: “Hepburn” (now obscure all-girl UK band, had a single “I Quit” on the “Buffy” TV soundtrack)
Thunderbugs: “Delicious” (another now-obscure UK-based all-girl band: 2 girls are English, 1 German and 1 French, had a single “Friends Forever” on the soundtrack to the movie “Center Stage”, this CD is quite obscure as it may have gotten cancelled at the last minute but a few slipped out, I never see it listed or reviewed anywhere, quite strange!!)
Lillix: “Falling Uphill” (Canadian all-girl band along the same lines as Hepburn, Thunderbugs, rubyblue, the Tuesdays, the Bangles + GoGos. Signed by Madonna to Maverick.)
Rooney: “Rooney”
Haywire: “Bad Boys”
Nerina Pallot: “Dear Frustrated Superstar”

Sorry Jackie, I can’t get into Linkin Park, or any of the hard bands that are big here in the US. There is just not enough of a pop element or sensibility to their music for me to like it, as well as a bad pissy attitude. Same goes with Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Staind, Cold, Powerman 5000, all those bands. They also all seem so corporate to me, a trendy fad that won’t last. Like there is no truth to them whatsoever.
Sorry, that’s just me...the 2 newest releases that caught my ear are JEWEL’s “0304” and SUGAR RAY’s “In Pursuit Of Leisure”. The only other NEW and UPCOMING releases I am interested in checking out are as follows:

OOPS yes Santi, I forgot to list Per Gessle’s “Mazarin”, DOH!!! I’m slapping myself silly right now. And yes, Storm, TTD’s debut album is utterly classic, I agree. I’ve owned numerous copies over the years, and need it back, never got around to rebuying it, but I will own his catalogue, that’s fer sure, Terence is one of the greats...

Today–
Puffy AmiYumi: “Nice.” (just kickASS, I *sigh* LUV Puffy, those 2 adorable Japanese girls with their delightful cuisinart powerpop. This new album is mostly in English, woohoo!! ;-D You haven’t truly LIVED until you hear their “Teen Titans Theme”!! Picture “Secret Agent Man” meets Dick Dale surf rock meets 60s girlgroup pop meets the Ramones and their breakdown “T-E-E-N T-I-T-A-N-S, Teen Ti-tans, Let’s Go!!”)
The Everyothers: 5 EPs, just powerpop rock + roll perfection, my buddies from NYC!!
And, don’t laugh, Mandy Moore: “I Wanna Be With You”!! TOTALLY underrated, Mandy is, the best singer to emerge from the teenpop boom from Orlando. Her early stuff, aka this CD, is perfect soulful Europop, and she is evolving too, with that followup being experimental pop, her acting in movies, and now, her cool-as-shit powerpop-sounding covers album called “Coverage”, where she tackles amazing unexpected songs from the 70s and 80s, people like Todd Rundgren, Cat Stevens, Elton John, XTC, the Waterboys, Joan Armatrading, Carole King, and more. I know all your jaws are on the floor right now, haha!! And she is writing songs now too, can’t wait to hear an album of Mandy originals after “Coverage”!!

powerpoplarry said on June 10, 2003 04:38:
Mari, I get it you like Metallica. ;-)
Um, I hate to tel you this, but their new album “St. Anger” is absolutely horrible. Oh god, they have been reduced to LAUGHABLE!! Seriously, and I heard it with some hardcore fans, and we were LAUGHING at how bad it is. The production is like a hatchet job, Bob Rock should be fired. Hardcore fans are up in arms at how bad it is.
Metallica could be finished...
Mari said on June 10, 2003 05:33:
Yeah, Metallica is not so good it used to be. Well, I’m not a fan, I just like to listen some “heavy”, about once a week. I haven’t bought St. Anger, and I’m not going to bought. But it’s kinda intresting that some fans likes the new album, some others doesen’t. I assume that new fans doesen’t like it, but the old fans does.
powerpoplarry said on June 10, 2003 05:39:
Nope Mari, NEITHER type of fan like St. Anger!! The old fans think it’s a laughable album, and new fans hate it just the same. It’s a perfect example of why some bands just can’t go home again. It’s almost like them trying desperately to recapture their youth, and it’s painfully obvious that they are trying this in a feeble way.
St Anger?? Try St Hahaha!!!
Mari, I understand you’re not a fan, but want some heavy music to hear once in a while, and that’s cool.

Today: New Radicals: “Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too”, Gregg Alexander is a flat out GENIUS!!
Mari said on June 10, 2003 22:51:
powerpoplarry, well St. Anger has got pretty good rewievs around the world. Fans I know says album is really hard. You have to listen it about 10 times before you “get it”. It doesen’t open for first listening, so you have to listen it many times. I have heard just one song, the mainsong St. Anger and I don’t like it. Drums sux.
powerpoplarry said on June 11, 2003 04:21:
I dunno Mari, I heard almost the whole thing, and the production is horrible, espesh the drum sound. I’ll give it another spin, I’ll hear it on a listening post, yes I know it is hard and thrashy, I heard it myself.
Today:
Again, the New Radicals CD, “Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too”, utter genius.
Oh my god, the BRILLIANT debut album by KENNA, “New Sacred Cow”!! All I say is, WOW!! Really original, creative, a bit 80s retro but modern/futuristic, and very tuneful/catchy. This sucker was supposed to be released a year ago on Fred Durst’s label Flawless/Geffen, but it kept on getting delayed and pushed back. Eventually, enough of a buzz built on Kenna and this album, that Columbia bought out his contract and released the album today. Credit goes to Matt Pinfield, who is now A+R over at Columbia, and having been the VJ on MTV’s cool, underground/alternative show “120 Minutes”, he is a musicologist and totally with-it on cool artists and bands. He must have had an advance Flawless CD of the album, as he became a fan, and basically saved this album, and Kenna himself, from a horrible fate. Good deal, as he will now get an audience he deserves, Kenna is briliant. He looks like Tupac, but has more in common with The Cure and Depeche Mode!! A guy from the Neptunes, Chase Chad, he produced it amazingly cool. Buy this IMMEDIATELY!!!
The other thing, and don’t laugh, Swedish girlgroup PLAY’s new CD, “Replay”, which is basically perfect pop, moving from bubblegum to artful, rock-tinged, 60s-flavoured girlpop. Very solid record, varied, tuneful, and soulful. Play rocks!!

HOWIE DAY: “Stop All The World Now” (hands down, THE best album of 2003, yet no one’s ever heard it outside the northeastern US, Coldplay fans would wet themselves if they ever heard this record...I’m seriious!! Totally moving, beautiful and brilliant...)
ANGGUN: “Open Hearts” Soundtrack (VERY cool and severely overlooked)
PHANTOM PLANET: “Phantom Planet” (at first, like the Strokes, but it gets much deeper and diverse and rewarding, retaining their powerpop roots underneath the noise)
LISA STANSFIELD: “The Complete Collection” (6CD box set of all her albums remastered with bonus tracks, hands down THE best female singer to really emerge in the 90s, from the UK or anywhere, and knowing how the music scene is nowadays, her stuff sounds more refreshing and vital than ever before...flat out amazing...totally underrated and a class act...)

Listening a lot to the new Texas album (“Careful What You Wish For”) (well... new in Canada, it came out Jan. 13th!)... I love it, some really great pop/rock tunes on there mixed in with the more dancy stuff they started branching out to on “The Hush”... anyone else got this CD?
powerpoplarry said on January 27, 2004 06:22:
Hey Babie, 3DD is decent, kind of a guilty pleasure for me...
And Bleu, I am a HUGE Michelle Branch fan, she is solid and consistent radio powerpop...”Breathe” is such a great tune, hooks upon hooks, too bad it didn’t go higher than #36 on the US Billboard Hot 100, deserved better...took me a while to buy the record “Hotel Paper” too cuz the Japanese import is the one to get, and it’s like $30 US here. Why that one?? Cuz it has “The Game Of Love” with Santana on it, and her B-side “Wanting Out”. The US version is incomplete without them. The next single should be “’Til I Get Over You”, the album’s secret weapon, with the French lyrics in the chorus, SUCH a great song, and it has HIT written all over it!!
Stormy, I hear Alcazar is a cool band, I should check em out (I can get the import here), and as for Donna Lewis?? She’s like a weak Cyndi Lauper, both albums were ehhhh!!! She had that one big hit, the other charters were minor and missed the US-Top 40.
And, OH, I LOVE Texas!!! Total unknowns here in the US, but I heard the 1st single on the new album, the one with the hiphop guy, and it’s a really cool song!! I need to get their stuff back...the new album is not out in the US, who knows if it will ever be?? No US deal, at least I don’t think so...one song from the new album is on the “Love Actually” soundtrack, out here on J/BMG, so we’ll see...not surprised it’s out in Canada, they get stuff there not released here, espesh if it’s from Europe + the UK...
CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:
NU: “AlphaBravoShockpopDisco!!” (my fave new Scandinavian band, from Denmark!! Think AQUA played by The Strokes in the garage, cheap minimal production, killer bubblegummy/new-waveish tunes, even a bit Elastica-ish!! Groovy!!)
THE DANDY WARHOLS: “Welcome To The Monkey House” (Brilliant, like 70s glam meets new wave, T-Rex meets Duran Duran!!)
DAVID PEEL + THE LOWER EAST SIDE: “And The Rest Is History: The Elektra Recordings” (Classic 60s hippie/punk, by John Lennon’s hero, David Peel, the TRUE godfather of punk!!)
VARIOUS ARTISTS: “We’re A Happy Family: A Tribute To Ramones” (AWESOME, brilliant tribute album, with killer artists doing Ramones covers: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Zombie, Eddie Vedder w/ Zeke, Metallica, U2, KISS, Marilyn Manson, Garbage, Green Day, The Pretenders, Rancid, Pete Yorn, The Offspring, Rooney, Tom Waits + The Ataris!! Some artists I am not big on but do great Ramones tunes here, liner notes by Stephen King!)
ROGER CLYNE + THE PEACEMAKERS: “iAmericano!” (The greatest band in the world that nobody has ever heard of, bar none!! Think an alt-country/powerpop/rock + roll hybrid, with southwestern Mexican spice + a dash of Bab Marley reggae and Springsteen swagger + storytelling!! Just brilliant, sad, and uplifting, Roger is a genius, and even Per and Bruce would sing Roger’s praises!!)
GEORGE USHER GROUP: “Fire Garden” (Think Matthew Sweet meets Pet Sounds and the Zombies, catchy, poetic, timeless and literate, baroque powerpop, amazing!!)
LEANN RIMES: “Greatest Hits” (a total guilty pleasure, but she’s a great singer, and besides some good pop country tunes (not cookie-cutter BTW), she has some killer Europop-type tunes like “Life Goes On”, one of the finest pop tunes of the past 10 years, like a parallel universe version of Robyn’s “Show Me Love”.)
SOUNDTRACK: “Ultimate Dirty Dancing” (another guilty pleasure, but the tunes are a mixture of classic 50s/60s pop with surprisingly solid 80s radio pop!! “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” by Bill Medley + Jennifer Warnes is so pure and uplifting that it bypasses schmaltz and corniness, plus on this new CD, it has the 12” version of that song, AND all the songs from the movie, sequenced in the order they appear in the movie, 26 tracks!! Remastered and sounding swell, it’s great!!)

Damineh, I’m curious...how can you listen to the same song for 3 days straight?? Aren’t you sick of it yet?? And, saying it brought back stomach ulcers and pain, wouldn’t that be torture??
Again, just curious...the song is good, but I’ve heard much better, Evanescence is slightly overrated, IMO....that’s OK you love em more than me, LOL!!
Oh BTW Damineh, I have a musical suggestion for you. I suggest you check out Finnish band HIM immediately...I have a strong hunch you will really connect with them and their unique music...they call it “love metal”, and it’s actually not a bad term. I think you will connect with their lyrics, as they might make you cry, your hairs stand up on the back of your neck, etc, and their music is BEAUTIFUL, gorgeous, rapturous melodies, emotional singing, but mixed with edgy, melodic, heavy poppy rock tunes. Not unlike Evanescence, but better and with a guy singing...his name is Vidi Valo, I think...HIM are AWESOME!!!!
Euro4Ever said on January 30, 2004 01:09:

ROGER CLYNE & THE PEACEMAKERS: “iAmericano!” (UNBELIEVABLE!! One of my alltime fave bands, and their best album yet!! It’s sorta John Mellencamp-ish, but with more Americana/rootsrock/altcountry/powerpop in there, even some reggae!! Their music’s not as predictable though, and mixed with some Mexican/southwestern spice, lyrics of humour and wisdom, just awesome, and they’re even better live!! It also comes with an amazing DVD!! It’s going to be hard to top this one for best album of 2004!! Get this, in the new issue of Billboard, “iAmericano!” debuted at NUMBER ONE on the Internet Sales Chart!! And #19 Heatseekers!! Check em out, at www.azpeacemakers.com, or www.rogerclyne.net, I think Per would be a fan, cuz Roger has TUNES up his wazoo, just like Per does!!)
