Best Roxette Live Performance

This is a question to all older roxers who had the possibility to see Roxette live on stage.
which song do you prefer most remembering the good old days when roxette went on tour?
For me,an all time favourite is “dressed for success”. the clapping hands at the end of the song...amazing!
what are your “special” memories of roxette songs in the past?
I’d like to see/hear “june afternoon” or “things will never be the same” once again- live!
pwbbounce (moderator) said on July 10, 2008 11:32:
I’ve never seen Rox/Per live. I’m still hoping that there will be a chance in the future though.
There are loads of songs that I think are cool live
Dance Away from the Zurich 1991 show
Hotblooded from the Stockholm 2001 show
Real Sugar from the Barcelona showcase 2001
Harleys & Indians/Lies from the C!B!B! Jo’burg 1994
Soul Deep from Zurich 1991 show
There are loads more though!

Even if I am not a fan of the rough live sound (I am a perfectionist, so I prefer the polished sound from the studio), I love the rocky live version of ’Joy Of A Toy’, from the ’Dangerous’ CD single. Recorded in 1987, if I remember well. ’The Rain’ in Johannesburg is a fantastic performance too.

Spending my time ( 2001 Madrid ) When Per sat down beside drums with silly face looking at audience singing louder than themselves, and Marie was of the point of cry. We were not many but we were the best!
7-Twenty-7 said on July 14, 2008 18:25:
Sorry, I have to disagree. FLAF 2001 is terrible in my opinion (and it was even used as a B-side!). That’s kind of ’acoustic’ treatment bores me, the song lacks all its original power. But well, they had to do it that way, because Marie can’t performe it the way she used to anymore...
In general terms, I am quite disappointed with the RS Tour (their worst tour ever).
:-(
roxtexanet said on July 14, 2008 20:15:
My favourite live ’Rox’ performance isn’t a Roxette performance at all... it’s Marie’s guest stint with her husband’s band, Sugarcane, in which she takes the lead for songs like “Jealous Guy,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “The Good Life.” Recorded in summer of 2002, and I believe the strength of Marie’s vocals that night refutes any notion that Marie “can’t” perform the way she used to - at least, she could still bring the house down then, before her body was wracked with chemotherapy and cortisone treatments. I think she still can - time will tell.
Mari said on July 14, 2008 20:40:
7-Twenty-7, don’t blame Marie when you obviously have troubles to undestand what is good and what isn’t. Well, maybe you learn some day...
7-Twenty-7 said on July 14, 2008 22:02:
Mari, if you still believe the RS Tour is superior to ’Join The Joyride’ or the ’Crash! Boom! Bang!’ one, I think you are the one having a BIG trouble there. Maybe someday you’ll get the ability to know what sounds good and what sounds... regular (to say it politely).
alexandru, it’s nice to see your English skills are in constant development. You can write longer sentences now :)

Well I think it’s quite normal when someone’s singing gets vorse over the years... But Marie still sang very good during the RS tour, there was nothing wrong with her voice, I think

I understand nothing in sound probably, cos I also think that Marie’s singing was superb during RS Tour. Btw judging by the songs Marie recorded lately, she still sings very good. As for Per I think he sings much better now than 10 years ago for instance
pwbbounce (moderator) said on July 16, 2008 11:03:
@First Girl - I think the same - I thought Marie sounded great during the RS tour. Hotblooded was brill from the Stockholm show! Plus, I also agree with you on Per’s voice. He sounds much better now than he did during Roxette’s early days. His voice is much clearer now.
Wicf said on July 16, 2008 19:18:
I always thought Per’s voice was best on POP, LS and Tourism... I really like his vocal performances in Call Of The Wild, Paint, Fingertips...

I don’t know why but when I watch live performances, I pay more attention to the audience. I like to see fans getting crazy. That’s why my fav Roxette performance is Roxette live in Argentina!!!

Cry, LS tour indoors. Superior quality in Maries voice. She has never (nor will, i believe...) sounded better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUil-46SnY4
The Rain, Johannesburg. There is something extra in this performace of this perticular song. Im so bummed out by the bad quality and the feedback. Would love to have had it in pristine quality.
The look & Dangerous, live-ism. Heavy guitar driven sound with a marie i good form. Maybe its been dubbed afterwards but it sounds great.
Fading like a flower, Velez. Because of the audience and the fact that Marie at least tries to hit the high notes. Nice, but only available in mediocre quality
WHEN WILL WE SEE AN OFFICIAL LIVE ALBUM WITH GREAT QUALITY??
RobS said on September 3, 2008 13:13:
Love The Rain, Love is All and Almost Unreal from CBL! Marie seems to put something extra into those songs, Also Watercolours from Live-Ism. Lots of other great ones though.
I only ever got to see them once back in 94, and as vividly as i remember being there and the start of the first song, i can’t remember what the performance was like. But i do remember loving it :-)

What makes you think it may have been overdubbed later?
When Will We See An Official Live Album With Great Quality??
Yeah would be really nice, ay :-)

I think for overall band sound / mixing etc. the prize goes to Joyride (both tours) with Room Service as the runner-up.
Marie’s best vocal performances (based on what I’ve heard so far)
Look Sharp - Oldenburg
Joyride - Latin American leg of tour and Summer Joyride (basically 1992 - ’91 was really uneven)
CBB - Lima, Peru
Room Service - Barcelona Showcase

Paul i may have missed it before (pardon me if i haven’t) but i’m in shock mate!I for one would’ve thought that you of all people would’ve seen Roxette Live.I myself have seen Roxette Live twice both times in Sheffield 92 & 94 still got the t-shirts (although they’re a little small on me now) anyway i still get goosebumps now when i look back & there’s me swaying my arms & clapping my hands to (Dressed for Success) @ the 94 concert.

What you will probably find is that people love the folk treatment that Fading Like A Flower received during the Room Service tour ! Its a fantastic version that concentrates more on the lyric and emotion of the song rather than the rocky commercial formula that made Roxette successful.
Even more so, Marie’s vocals are overly harmonised in the studio version chorus and in my house, people dislike it as it doesn”t really sound emotional - it isn’t as emotional as Listen To Your Heart, a song that is popular at home.
But Marie sounds as if she truely feels what she is singing on this live version - where as she doesn’t so much in the studio verison.
So I agree with both Mari and alexandru. A fantastic version of the song ! A worthy b-side indeed !

Hey boys and girls, there´s one big thing to discuss... Both Liveism and Crash Boom Live! were “polished” in post-mix, so to worst moments were “corrected”... I think, that other recordings have better informational value... I was really surprised, how Johannesburg and RS Stockholm sounded much better, then I remembered from shows, that I´ve seen live. There is an obvious question, why 1991 and 1994 tours were recorded and published and 2001 wasn´t? Easy to answer, was is good enough to publish? I´ve heard many criticisms, that RS tour was kinda not so good...There were good moments, but......direct mix record from live in spain 2001 reveals some weak points...mainly in Marie´s voice, hard to say, what was the reason....we all know, what happen not so long after this show......
And back to topic..... IMHO best moments definetely are LTYH, Dance away and knocking on every door from 1991, Joyride and the big L. from 1994 and Real sugar + crush on you from 2001, mainly TV promo has marvelous sound of Real Sugar!!! And except roxette, of course Gyllene Tider 25 anniversary....that WAS a show!!!

zlatyvoci said: “Both Liveism and Crash Boom Live! were “polished” in post-mix”
What exactly do you mean were polished. I highly doubt the vocals would have been re-recorded, so apart from maybe some adjustments of the levels or equalisation, which i would think is pretty standard for a live show release.
zlatyvoci said on September 23, 2008 15:43:
It´s being quite normal for releasions like this....definetely cuts off, tune up, quantize, etc.... If I focus on latest Per´s live act...Handig man....I saw live Helsingborg and saw mistakes live (mainly Helena´s and both guitarist´s, but Stockholm DVD is perfect....how could this happen? :)...........Well, in business it is really obvisous to do so....I even know some Czech band, who re-recorded complete vocals in studio, because those from live act were “out-of-tune”......
regn said on September 24, 2008 05:40:
Well the sound of the mixing table always IS different and better than the sound that comes out of the Speakers i mean the sound that we heard + the screams and the accoustic conditions of the place (stadium, theatre or starge places ...) but anyway Live ism or C!B!B! are far from perfection so i guess the “polished” wasn’t really a hardcore thing.
zlatyvoci said on September 24, 2008 17:39:
That´s natural, I meant recording from mixing desk...before “polishing” and after them.... Have you heard that one from Spain? Link was here not so long time ago..... And I of course had in mind errors kinda, that Helena started to sing sommatider chorus few beats, than she should, etc....not sound errors, but performers errors ;-) I´m both musician and technician in recording studio.... ;-)
pwbbounce (moderator) said on September 25, 2008 07:53:
I don’t see what the problem is. I like it when people makes mistakes live or there may be the occasional off note. They’re only human and are going to make mistakes from time to time. I make mistakes in my job all the time! lol
zlatyvoci said on September 26, 2008 17:55:
Yeah! What was the most important was to compare what you´ve had chance to hear ;-) Sommatider hey hey sommatider? :D

The best live performance experience I have are from Crash Boom Bang tour in Stockholm 9 september 1994. I was standing in Globen arena and in the end of the concert Marie trow a tambourine out in the audience and I catch it!!! This tabourine are signed by Marie and nice memory from this concert.
Nakava said on October 22, 2008 20:34:
I saw Roxette in Chicago in 1992 on the Joyride Tour at the Park West. This is a pretty small venue as it was changed last minute from the Riviera Theater. Not a huge crowd for them in the States at that time. The same concert that they did for 20,000 fans was done for about 2,000 of us there... pretty cool. I remember “Knockin on Every Door” where they’re all lined up and then sing “better learned your lesson now!” pointing into the crowd and I was right up front and Marie was pointing right at me. Schwiiing. Cool moment.
fridapeeples said on October 24, 2008 04:40:
WOW! Joyride tour for 2,000? That would have been awesome. Did they use the regular stage? It was quite large and designed for big venues.
Nakava said on October 27, 2008 02:58:
The stage was a a little smaller than an arena but still pretty good size. It was supposed to be at the Riviera Theater which is a little larger but definitely not a major venue in Chicago, but was changed last minute I guess because they didn’t sell enough tickets. It was amazing when the video Liveism came out from Sydney to see how many people in other parts of the world that were packing arenas for them. Pretty lucky to see them in such an intimate setting.

I think my favorite moment was when Per, giddy as a little boy after playing “Dangerous” for the first time ever during the Rock runt riket tour in 1987, exclaims “Did you like it?? Really??”
