Roxette documentary on TV4

STOCKHOLM (Updated) - As per usual Swedish TV4 will have a Gessle-related program at the end of the year. This time they will broadcast the brand new documentary "Roxette - 20 år" (Roxette - 20 years), about the 20th anniversary, on December 29 19:30 CET. The half-hour show will be re-run December 31.
Using previously not shown and unique footage from, among others the Gessle family's private camcorder, Roxette's progress from a small band touring the Swedish countryside via the breakthrough with "The Look" in the US, to the big venues in both South Africa and Argentina is shown.
In the documentary Marie and Per tell about the historical gig in China where Roxette as the second western band ever (Wham! was the first) was allowed to perform in Beijing. They also talk about the reunion after Marie's sickness.

Great news :-D
Really Roxette was made by SVT, not TV4.

Yeah, me too: I really hope that this documentary will appear somewhere on the net. Would it be too much to ask for subtitles (from TV4) ’cos there’s no way the documentary is in English... That reminds me of the book about Per, which will surely be in Swedish too. I wish there were more Swedish courses where I live:))

Do you thing it will be so big document as Making Of Joyride and Really Roxette? It´s ten years since last one. 20th anniversary deservers big format. I have an idea: 50 minutes long document Rox 20 incl. Aerosol story from this June, The Making of One Wish video, some interviews with P & M and people around them, some video memories from early 80s till today, all milestones of their way. With One Wish and Reveal (if there will be any) videos. Oh, this would be great material for new DVD. Don´t you think?
PS: I have GT and Mazarin DVD and they are great. I want something similar from Roxette. There will never be better opportunity than this year?

It seems TV4 is producing this themselves so it could go either way really. My guess is that it won’t be that great. We’ll see.
Mari said on December 13, 2006 20:50:
My guess is documentary is mostly memories and highlights from 80’s till today, and of course Per’s and Marie’s interview.

Oh cool!
By the way, there was supposed to be a Roxette document on MTV3 here in Finland on Nov 27th; However, it was cancelled. It was mentioned in various magazines & tabloids. Don’t know what happened, it was half an hour long according to pre-details.
Mari said on December 13, 2006 23:30:
animalkingdom, as far as I know it was the same documentary we saw 2001, made here in Finland by MTV3. Remember?
gyllene_tjej said on December 14, 2006 08:35:
nice news and perfect timing! Hope to see more current shots rather than old footage, but we’ll see. Well, it surely counts as a Xmas present :)
rosa_73 said on December 14, 2006 12:08:
It should be supposedly broadcasted yesterday(December 13th) but due to that Discovery thing,it was be cancelled.
animalkingdom said on December 14, 2006 12:20:
@ Mari
Ok, you could be right but I recall the 2001 documentary being 1 hour long...since they showed music videos in the middle of the interview, too...And I don’t see any point in broadcasting a 5,5 year old document for the 20th anniversary (??).
rosa_73 said on December 14, 2006 12:56:
Actually it’s a 40 min. documentary since when it should be broadcasted yesterday,it stayed from 21.00 until 21.40 on tv

40 min minus TV4’s 10 minutes of commercials...

40 minutes too few for 20 years. but, better than nothing.

The program was fairly pointless with very few seconds of new material. Obviously the next showing isn’t a re-run as it’s 5 minutes longer...
Mari said on December 29, 2006 19:16:
Nice documentary but too short! Btw, what did Per and Marie say in the end of the documentary when Marie took Per’s hand and Per said something about coffee with funny voice?
ATLTK said on December 29, 2006 19:24:
it was good but mostly a mix of about roxette&really roxette wonder why?
aqnd they didnt even mentioned China
CRIZ said on December 29, 2006 19:29:
Any scenes from the Roomservice Tour??? (running fans...for example...trying not to slip on a wet floor in Hannover for example..hahaha..;))
AURYTE said on December 29, 2006 19:34:
@Criz: no, they talked very shortly about Room Service era. Just showed Per and Marie in the car (Per was talking on the phone) and a short extract from the interview in RixFm.
And Have A Nice Day even didn’t get a mention.
I hope that it was just part 1 and that we’ll get part 2 on New Year’s Eve.

Maybe it´s online after 31.December on TV4?
it´s 5 Minutes longer.
gyllene_tjej said on December 29, 2006 21:06:
ok, I decided to provide a little summary of the doc in English. Actually, there still remains hope to see more coz they promised a longer version with “bonus material” right after midnight on Dec 31. Which might actually be the case because when you look at the end of the doc mentined are many Roxette songs that did not make it into today’s doc. but on the other hand, maybe we shouldn’t get our hopes too high coz the roundup is going to be only5-10 min longer.
The footage consisted of Swedish live tour backstage - this time in colour, The making of Joyride, Really Roxette mainly and Per and Marie telling their story in the conference room. Not much new footage or news really, but still really touching to see and hear them both (althogh it was Per who did most of the talking). The final part when Marie grabs his hand saying it doesn’t feel that long time is the most touching. Per mentions them sitting in old folks home drinking coffee and trying to remember what the record was called. dressed something... :)
P: The likelihood that a swedish band would become number one in USA was very slim, almost none. Sometimes people did not even say we came from Sweden- to make it more natural. It’s fantastic that there is still interest in Roxette. What is more sensational, is that we are interested in Roxette ourselves. Well, 1986 it was a different world.
People around us were more realistic, but we we just knew we would make it. Roxette is built upon the differences between Marie and me, not only the similarities. that’s why it all went so smoothly. it all started in these weird TV shows in Germany or spain, here in sweden nothing really happened. Here nobody took us really seriously. What we needed to do was to put a foot in the door, then it just went on. we needed a great record like Look sharp!. Marie knew this record would conquer the world, i was more like: “We’ll see”...
Marie: I had this inner feeling that we will make it, besides our friends and people we knew said we sound fantastic.
Per: The news spread that our song was being played in the USA. We took it for granted it was DFS or LTYH as these were the current singles. But it happened to be The look, brought to a radiostation by an exchange student. amazing, people just called in the radios to hear the song more times. Noone knew what was going on. We couldn’t stop that.
It was so impossible to be Billboard no 1. ABBA did it once, we did it 4 times.
Marie: amazing, I can’t put my finger on it. How did we manage to meet all these crazy fans in america for instance?
American radiostations didn’t have room for other music than American or English. The key to Roxette’s success is good songs good looks and good videos. they felt comfortable in front of the camera, they were both energetic, Per with his Limahl hairdo, they had what it took (says a MTV guy)
Per: At our first show we tried to slightly compete with each other about who would taker the role of the front person on stage. It just took me a moment to realise it was time to take a step back and let Marie take over. It was fine by me, I could at least drink some bear in the meantime. Without marie’s stage talent we wouldn’t have been able to play in football arenas for so many people.
Marie: I just love acting and being on stage. Once I start I get so hooked on that, it feels so natural.
Per. it’s so unbelievable that a swedish group singing in english can tour the world and unite people. I mean people with different religions, skin colour and political views still come together to sing It must have been love. Roxette at that time was more than 24/24 job, constant planning and travelling, and which is crucial - playing live, not playback as many other bands did.
In south america we had to do a trick - when the concert was about to end it was only Pelle left on stage playing drums. Marie and me and the rest ran to the buses and limos before the crowd realised the gig was over. i remember once, police escorting us drove into a dead end street. we just stood there - we in the car, the band in the tourbus. and the crowd just got there. It was pretty steamy inside I remember Marie writing HELP on the carwindow. It was a bit tough but fantastic experience.
P. When i got a phonecall on my way to press conference in Brussels that Marie tripped over in her bathroom i had to gasp for breath, you never know what to say or do when it happens to somebody so close to you, we are like family marie and me.
Marie: It is like a miracle. I know many people with this illness who are not alive anymore. I made it and i thank God for the way I feel today. thanks God time flies so fast and my kids are so lovely.
P: Marie called me to record some new songs for Roxette. i almost dropped the receiver, are we really 20 already? The recording was a nice and funny experience.
that’s more or less it, styped more or less on the spot. Enjoy :)

unfortunately I don’t have the needed equipment to convert the self recorded VHS to DVD :( Otherwise I would have helped,. The doc is not long at all, cutting off the commercials in between it leaves us around 21 minutes of watching.

It is a nice documentary, the parts from “Hacelo por mi” almost made me cry. But there are roxette eras that weren’t included, because the story jumps from CBB to Room Service.
gessle-addict said on December 31, 2006 17:21:
The docu is really beautiful. Marie looks better than ever. There are sooo many parts from Buenos Aires that it really touched me, especially the part where they enter the studio to do the playback of The Look in “Hacelo por Mí “TV show. The crowd screamed so wildly that Marie couldn’t believe what was going on. Those were glorious days for sure. By the way, how cute the American guy is!!! Oh my!
Thank you very much, tevensso, very kind of you.
tevensso (moderator) said on December 31, 2006 23:13:
Watching the re-run now, it is quite different, still the same, but with many more snippets and comments.
gyllene_tjej said on December 31, 2006 23:39:
nah, not that many new comments, tev? About LTYH - that folk thought they built the ruins, then the China thing with the soldiers in the front row and Roxette refusing to play if they held their weapons. then a short interview with Åkerlund about the pleasure of working with Per (Anyone shooting). Regarding RS then we only got a snippet from TCOTH videoshooting.
And then backstage in Hannover on RS tour - but that was nothing new, as we saw it on Swedish TV already, don’t remember in which programme, though... Per and Marie in the changing room, having their make up done and so on.
and well, all the songs mentioned in the credits were indeed included in the doc (as parts of videoclips).
so to sum up, nothing new, and frankly not much of the private footage that we have not seen before. But the docu is still great, of course
Have a nice 2007, everybody!
roxflash said on January 1, 2007 05:59:
way to short to sum up a 20 year old career in 23-25 min program.
I honestly could not see the difference between the two versions (?),
at first look.
tevensso (moderator) said on January 1, 2007 11:04:
Both shitty, the latter less shitty, that’s a way to sum it up. Virtually NO new footage at all in this documentary. I think it’s a terrible way to treat Roxette and the 20th.
