Request for comments: More forums?

When we get the new website up, it might be a good time to re-think the selection of forums we have in SmallTalk. Right now we have “Roxette” for general discussion, “International” for non-English topics, “TDR Discussions” for site feedback, “Market Place” for selling and buying, and finally “Off-Topic” for everything else.
Most of the discussion happens naturally in the “Roxette” forum, but are there topics that are discussed so much that they would deserve their own forum? Or do you think (like I do) that it is easier to read the discussions if there are only a few forums but that are more active?
During the Room Service tour we had a forum for the tour-related topics, but it wasn’t too popular. From that experience, I’m not too fond of creating new forums, but I’d like to hear your opinions.

I agree with Ally.
Keep up the good work guys!! :)

I like it like it is now, too, but I do have one suggestion: how about a Game-forum? It sure would make finding the “real” discussions in the Off Topic-forum (and maybe even in the Roxette-forum?) easier!
qrox said on January 12, 2006 13:58:
It would be nice to have a forum exclusively dedicated to Per, another one to Marie, another one for GT, and another one for the rest of Rox Related projects (such as TLB, SOAP, etc).

I think the way it has been should be the way it will be.
But yes, maybe one should sort out all this “game” stuff cos it doesn’t belong to a serious music forum. Call the new topic FUN or something like this. You might also consider creating a new topic in case a new CD is released. Doesn’t matter how many people will join there but at least you have a seperate place where all the talks are concentrated.
Ah, oh yes, sorry, there will be no c&c at TDR ;-)

agree with grox, so I would say:
- Roxette
- Per / Son Of A Plumber (combine these 2, since it actually is the same)
- Marie
- Gyllene Tider
- International
- TDR Discussions
- Off Topic
- Market Place
No need to separate the games from the Off-Topic.

I would not say no to a Per/GT/SOAP and a Marie forum, but I’m afraid it would mean more work for us to move topics here and there..
Chaghi said on January 14, 2006 01:39:
More forums will lead to more missplaced topics.
I think that the idea of “tags”, as used by del.icio.us, GMail, Flickr, Technorati, and many other sites, would be just perfect for a forum (I think nobody implemented this yet in a forum system).
Instead of having multiple forums, one could have different tags or labels or categories or keywords or whatever word you like. And then each post could be tagged with one or more of these labels. And then you could say “lets see all post labeled as Marie”, and you get a “dynamic” list of posts (–> a forum) on the fly.
So you could have as many “formus” as you like, and some posts could belong to more than one forum. But these forums would be dynamic.
But well... I’m dreaming :)
Seriously, if the forums are “fixed”, I wouldn’t go for more forums. I agree that maybe one called “fun” or “games” would be ok, but I don’t like the idea of separated forums for Marie / Per / Roxette / GT stuff.
What I would like to see in the TDR-next-generation ;) is a proper search engine. TDR has tons of valuable information lost in the history of the Smalltalk section.

@Judith: You may leave the old topics where they are. When you see a new topic is created where it doesn’t belong, you may move it, or at least move the most active topics.
Jud (moderator) said on January 14, 2006 13:03:
grox: I’m not talking about old topics, THAT would be a lot of work, but currently we have to move quite some topics from Roxette to Off-topic, or market place etc.. this would increase if we’d separate Per and Marie from Roxette, and personally, I think it’s better to spend this time writing articles :P

It would be good to perhaps add more profile information & also a siggy in our profile..
roxeteer (moderator) said on January 16, 2006 05:15:
@Chaghi: Tagging is implemented at least in bbPress, http://bbpress.org/ which is used in WordPress support forums, http://wordpress.org/support/.
Chaghi said on January 17, 2006 00:38:
@roxeteer: I didn’t know of bbPress. It looks sooo minimalist, at least in the WordPress implementation. It’s as clean as TDR’s Smalltalk :)
Anyway... I should have asked Google before talking here about tags in forums as if it were the idea of the year...
RobS said on January 21, 2006 00:41:
I don’t think more forums are needed, but like Chaghi mentioned “tags” (i’m not familiar with that term) or sub-forums would be nice, where the main forum shows all of the latest posts, while going to a sub-forum shows only those of that particular one. See http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=7 to understand what I mean. There’s a groups pull down menu at the top.
What I would like to see is something like:
Roxette & related
- Per
- Marie
- SOAP
- GT
Off-topic
International
TDR discussions
Market Place
Basically the same as now only with the sub-forums within the Roxette section.
One thing I hate is Forums with too many sections too choose from. It makes it hard to decide where to post or to look to find something.
And with regard to sig’s, i’d rather have none, makes it look cleaner, but text only would be ok.

Yes... but then you have those people who apart from her/his name/nick, chooses to inlude this-phrase-which-is-so-nice, and they will reply with a line of real content (the actual “post”), and five or or ten or even more lines of signature, that everyone is “oblyed” to read again an again...
Personally, I don’t care for the cool phrase of the day that every TDR’s memeber might have.

I think the forums are enough and just perfect as they are now. I really like that all Rox-Related it’s on only one forum altogether, this way we get to know and read about all the things in just one step, otherwise we’ll have to go from one heart, i mean forum to another and maybe lose some stuff.
Just a humble point of view.

Looking forward to seeing it!
Just one question for you are we all going to have to re-registered again for the new one....
roxeteer (moderator) said on March 15, 2006 06:59:
Moving the old data to a new system is maybe the trickiest part of it all. We have over 1400 news articles, over 8000 active registered users (inactive accounts will be deleted) and tens of thousands of messages. That’s a lot of stuff to be moved around.
ally77 said on March 15, 2006 13:04:
Very true.... and a great idea to get rid of all those inactive accounts!
RobS said on March 16, 2006 07:19:
What would be deemed an inactive account? not used for 6/12 months??
ally77 said on March 16, 2006 08:09:
That is what happens on another forum I use... they email everyone telling them if they have not logged in for 6 months and posted at least once there account is deleted..
purplemedusa said on March 16, 2006 12:50:
Please can we have a seperate ’games’ section - it’s MOST anoying to get these opinion polls in the Roxette section... your fav song, your worst song, best of CBB, CBB surviver etc! I’ve had enough!!!
roxeteer (moderator) said on March 16, 2006 15:28:
Only the accounts that were never re-registered for this version of the site will be deleted. That was a few years ago, maybe someone remembers when it was (because I don’t).
marcusvandeursen said on March 20, 2006 00:10:
Visa, couldn’t you integrate an option to change one’s
username - without having to re-register a new account?
Games section? gr8 idea... indeed there are many of those similar threads a lot.
Perhaps one picture per user, showing the user... like on the soap forum would be nice next to a post.
ally77 said on January 12, 2006 08:37:
I like the way it’s all set out now, no complaints from me... it’s simple to navigate around!
