Respect, flaming and vanishing posts

(This is a reply to a comment by LEO -> http://www2.dailyroxette.com/article.php/1997 , that I originally posted there, but decided to take here instead)
“What we do insist is that EVERYONE exercises self-contol when submitting comments... we want to see people respect the opinions of others, even if we disagree. We don’t want to see any “flaming,” and we don’t want to see any vulgar language. We are under no obligation at TDR to print/publish whatever someone self-publishes. All comments are subject to editing and/or deletion.”
Now if only the moderators here would follow this rule themselves... How can you expect your readers to respect the opinions of others if they see a moderator do the exact opposite?
Sure, I understand the whole part of not having to publish any comments, but sometimes I really wonder if certain comments were only deleted because a moderator didn’t like or agree with what they said and not because they were offensive in any way! At the same time, there are comments by posters “flaming” other posters or obviously not respecting other posters that should be edited, deleted or at least addressed by a mod and aren’t, even though a mod has read that particular thread/the comments to an article and edited other posts. Why is that? Just a matter of liking or not liking a particular poster on the part of the moderators? How would you e.g. explain why it seems to be ok for some posters to call others pathetic, but not for other posters?
And to me, it looks like the percentage of comments deleted for no apparent reason has increased over the past few months (I started reading TDR almost 8,5 years ago, so I think that’s enough grounds for comparison) and to be honest, this doesn’t exactly make me want to spend time writing a comment! So most of the time, I don’t even bother...
Just had to get this off my chest, it’s been bothering me for quite a while now;-)

I very seldomly delete a comment myself, I only edit out words usually.

Are you sure it’s not the members themselves editing their posts? I saw one today where someone posted and then edited it to just ” - ” If the mods do it I think it says “edited by Tevennso/Judith/Leo at 24.00” so you’ll know when they’ve done it.

Yes, whenever anyone (the original author or a moderator) has edited a message, there is a line saying who edited it and when.
