Low Blow For Airlines Around The World

I caught the news, mostly lookin for the weather when this story came across:
A Utah mother has two sons, both United States Marine Corps soldiers. One son, lost his right arm and leg in Iraq. He’s in the hospital in Maryland presently. The other son, has returned to the front lines in Iraq, saying that he needs to be there. The trauma of seeing her son in the hospital was compounded when, on the return flight to Salt Lake City, Utah, the purple heart the first son received, $2500USD, and the undeveloped roll of film of pictures with both sons had been stolen.
Apparently, there was no room in the overhead bin for the bag, so she turned it over to be put in cargo. Somewhere between Washington D.C. and Salt Lake City, the items were stolen. She supposes an airline employee took them. She wants the medal and film returned.
It’s sad when someone does this. It blackens the eye of all.

i woyld never have taken those things and handed it off to a retarded flight attentand or other airport personaell, i mean hello these are the peopel inherently responsible for not using the billions of dollars they make off travelers to upgrade airline security,

Thats horrible, and sometimes in our grief we do stupid things because we are not thinking clearly, I cannot express how angry that makes me feel, who would steal a purple heart medal and a roll of film? I mean the money i can understand (and yes i understand the medal could be sold on the black market to war gamers) but the other items are not of much value to another human being. I hope the person gets caught and spends the rest of their life rotting in jail... but remember the rule of three, whatever ye give out, comes back times three.

StillFar: The airline that she flew back on was not named in the news cast... subsequently, it could have been one of about 5 that fly from SLC to DC (and that doesn’t include if there’s a plane / carrier change). There’s a saying at my job: What looks bad for one.... looks bad for all.
As for why that was in her carry on, she figured it WOULD be with her ON the plane. And when they were interviewing her, she didn’t look like she was doing too good at that moment.
On my return trip from Philly, I’d forgotten to pack my little “generic” Swiss Army knife back into my checked luggage. I was running late because of traffic and what not. Blade about 1” long, with scissors, toothpick and tweezers. They stayed behind in Philly. Life happens and you don’t anticipate stuff like that. Personally, she should have stuffed it under her seat, but in her grief, she handed the carry on over to the flight attendant. It was not a locked piece of luggage.

personally I think there’s more important stuff than a medal and a film to worry about... what about controlling the people who get on the planes?
regarding the money: who a) carries 2500$ cash without having bodyguards around? b) who leaves this money to the cargo? what was it? in 1 cent coins? I’d leave my clothes and whatever other bags to the cargo and take the precious stuff with me... it’s like if I would put my Marie or Eva records in a box for the flight attendants or whoever to _throw_ it to the suitcase/cargo compartment :S

To clarify, hopefully for the FINAL TIME:
EVERYTHING that was stolen, was originally in a CARRY ON BAG. Since we’re limited to what we can bring on the airlines here in the US, she might not have brought a purse with her. And in the state of mental DISTRESS she was in, she didn’t think to grab anything out of the bag.
Holy shit folks... COME ON. You’re blaming a woman who has a son that she will probably have to care for for the rest of his life (unless he can be fitted for prosthetics), and has the potential of losing another son to this war. I posted this, hoping it would be a warning to others to MAKE SURE you either hide your valuables, keep them with you, leave them home, or lock the things away!!!
Instead, you are splitting hairs over whether or not she should have handed over the bag.
No more “public service announcements” from me. Figure this shit out on your own.

I DO carry my things with me ;) What’s more, I always try to put the bag over my head (in the compartment of course) or under the seat in front of me to have it close to me. Never trust anyone.
And well, regarding the sons.. I guess you will crucify me for this buy they chose to be there. Sure I pity her because the fact that her sons want to become heroes, SHE has to suffer. Tough job this of being a mum :(

Jude: No they didn’t. The young men did NOT choose to go to Iraq. You’re confusing having to do a job that, yes the did volunteer for, with some sick perversion that some folks have about wanting to go and fight in a war. If I had continued to pursue a miltary avenue during college, I would be over there right now myself.
My “jobs” would have been Judge Advocate General’s Office (lawyers) in the US Army, or underwater demolition / construction with the US Navy. I didn’t pursue it for various reasons that are my own. I have 2 step-brothers in the military, one Navy / one USMC. NEITHER of them WANT to go to Iraq. Both WANT to stay Stateside and serve their time in their permanent duty stations. However, they ACCEPT that they have NO choice in the matter and that if their units are activated, they will go, or be charged with desertion.
Several of the guys I work with that have gone over are / were RESERVISTS. You know... the guys who’d already DONE their time and were in the process of rotating out of the military. Only 2 guys have managed to rotate out. TWO, since the start of all of this.
No one chooses to go to war (except for the select few that are definitely glory hounds), it just happens in cases like this.

well one can choose to be in the army or not? besides you wrote
“The other son, has returned to the front lines in Iraq, saying that he needs to be there.”
for me this sounds he wanted to go there? :S

ahh judith your right, but you know in the policitally correct atmosphere of the world profiling people is a big no no ,so we’lll have more plane attacks its just a matter of when. There are alot of people who voluntarily went to iraq, many against their parents wishes and i feel alot ofr their families, but that the case with any conflict, i have a cand;le lit throught the entrie set of holidays for the troops, i wish they were home before xmas, i know they wont be but not forgetting they are out there is the best thing we can all do

Jude: His statement reflects on his loyalties to the men and women he serves with. I didn’t clarify that, and I’m sorry. But he would rather be at his brother’s side right now, then where he is. However, he knows that he has a job to do.

I feel sorry for her, because anyone who would steal those things is just sick! But at the same time I don’t understand why she would hand such prescious things over to just anyone. I mean, I’d have put them in my handbag or even my pocket if I was her.
