Still not working. :( I guess this means I’m officially keeping my e-mail address at yahoo.com. Roxette.org is a bit too unreliable for me.
Starrox said on July 18, 2004 03:36:
roxette.org as we know it is gone for good, unfortunately! Got this through the RML:
—-
As you may or may not have noticed, all the roxette.org websites are down.
The bad news is that the user-run roxette.org websites are going to stay
that way indefinitely - there was a DMCA complaint against one of them, and
as a result, my place of employment will no longer allow me to host them;
given that there is simply no way I can afford to pay for the kind of
bandwidth that roxette.org was using, that’s basically the end of
roxette.org web hosting as it used to exist.
The good news is that it’s possible that at least the core roxette.org
pages might return in some form or other, but I don’t know about that yet.
And the mailing lists hosted on lists.roxette.org will remain completely
unaffected - they were not involved in the DMCA complaint, and they use so
little bandwidth that it is trivial to keep them running.
I apologize for the sudden nature of the disappearance of roxette.org’s
servers, but there was really nothing I could do about it. I will make an
effort to allow individual roxette.org webmasters to retrieve their
materials from roxette.org’s server so that they can be hosted elsewhere,
and will send details on that to just the roxette.org mailing list, when it
happens.

DCMA = Digital Millennium Copyright Act, so the reason’s copyright infringement :-((

This is terrable!! An end of an era!! Gosh... can’t believe it!! I’m not getting this copyright thing...? What exactly was abused according to the compliant?
Jud (moderator) said on July 18, 2004 09:59:
there were some mp3s hosted there... and I am sure some were ilegal.. :(
Starrox said on July 18, 2004 10:22:
Exactly, lots of audio files, videos, pictures or newspaper articles and most of them could be the reason for that complaint! I wish they had contacted the “owner” of those file(s) first before destroying something special like roxette.org... *sigh*
Jud (moderator) said on July 18, 2004 12:37:
no.. I have a couple of domains at rox.org and got the same email sent to the mailing list.. too bad rox.org is gone
Denstandigaresan said on July 18, 2004 15:18:
Ouch. :( Not nice. :(
Bye bye... and thank you. :)
I take it this includes roxservice? :(
Darn, was just getting ready to download midi files from there for my new mobile!;)
Jud (moderator) said on July 18, 2004 15:41:
I think some of the roxbytes files were hosted there, as were roxservice..
Denstandigaresan said on July 18, 2004 16:15:
Yep, as I found out... the midis on roxbytes are hosted at roxservice. *Typical, I want them now huh?* ;)
pietROxette said on July 19, 2004 09:47:
Sh!t... Gosh, now I have to find a new server... Well, for sure I can mirror some of the files, except for some large full concert videos. The only problem is that now I’m on vacation and can’t download the files from roxette.org ftp. Does anyone know how much time we have to download the files? Can someone ask Dan on the RML? I don’t have a constant internet connection at the moment. Thanks.
BTW, the midis on ROXBYTES were NOT linked to Roxservice... I have them all, I will upload them to a different server when I get back home.
Jud (moderator) said on July 19, 2004 13:38:
I think we cannot connect via FTP either. As Dan writes in his email, he will let us webmasters get the stuff from the server but he doesn’t know when yet. When we can, he will let us know :)
pietROxette said on July 19, 2004 21:36:
atw.hu does only accept pages in Hungarian. They have a top frame advert on all pages hosted there, however, ithere is an option to pay for the banner removal.
Yup, it’s possible to access roxette.cs.caltech.edu via ftp. I hope it’ll remain the same till I get back home so I can download the stuff I don’t have myself.

Anyone needing bannerless hosting without big bandwidth needs plz send me some email :)
pietROxette said on July 20, 2004 13:48:
Well, if you are looking for free webhosting services, check out a link collection I’ve made on this topic: http://ingyenweb.lap.hu . The category names are in Hungarian, but that doesn’t matter since still it’s a collection of relevant links. Hope you’ll find a decent hosting service there.
pietROxette said on July 20, 2004 13:52:
@lawyer: the banners on ROXBYTES are not the ones ATW inserts on sites. The current banners are part of Google’s AdSense Programme, just as some of thge banners here on TDR. If you want to see how ATW banners look, check http://roxette.atw.hu : the fullscreen width banner on the top of the site is what ATW inserts, the “Sponsored links” one is a Google-ad.
pietROxette said on July 21, 2004 07:14:
I’ve only paid to remove the banner from the account where the html pages for ROXBYTES are hosted. Otherwise it’s free, you get 500 MB of webspace, however, you can’t use it for storage only, you need to have html content on the site. Also, you have to have the page (or at least a part of it) in “this Hungarian language”.
Jud (moderator) said on July 21, 2004 20:59:
I don’t speak Hungarian but I guessed...
Azonosító: http://__________.atw.hu >> choose what your domain should be
Jelszó: Name
Jelszó megint: surname
E-mail cím: email? ;)
Oldalad címe: passworrd
Oldalad leírása: repeat password
Kategória: I guess culture, couldn’t find music
Kérem adja meg az alábbi számot számjegyekkel:
ötszázötvenegy
not sure what this part means though...
pietROxette said on July 21, 2004 22:29:
@Judith: almost :-)
You got “Azonosító” right, but “Jelszó” is “password”, “Jelszó megint” is “repeat password”, “Oldalad címe” is “page title”, “Oldalad leírása” is “page description”, “Kategória” is “category” (“Music” is “Zene”).
@Lawyer: it’s not that I don’t want to create an accout for you, but it’d be pointless, since you will not create content in Hungarian. I’ve mentioned it a few times that the pages hosted there must be in Hungarian. It’s in the Terms of Service. The reason why they don’t allow foreign language content to be published is very simple: all their banners target Hungarians, only national advertisers put adverts there. A site in a foreign laguage would mostly attract foreign visitors, who are not interested in offers in Hungarian. If they find out that a site is not in Hungarian, they delete it.
