Did u already count down the best albums of 2003?

Might be a lil late for this (since it’s already mid-February) but for fun, what are your favourite albums from last year?

Sorry, been away, so I’ve no idea if you’ve already gone thru this..

My top-3

1- Per Gessle: Mazarin (not just cuz it’s Per; it IS brilliant!)
2- David Bowie: Reality (one of the man’s absolutely bestest work...But ok, Heathen was better!)
3- Madonna: American Life (it doesn’t age as well as Ray Of Light but nevertheless it is great!)

1 The Pop Hits - Roxette
2 Unbreakable: Greatest Hits - Westlife
3 American life - Madonna
4 One heart - Celine Dion
5 Life for rent - Dido
6 Escapology - Robbie Williams
7 Stripped - Christina Aguilera
8 Smallville Soundtrack - Various
9 Fallen - Evanescence
10 Laundry service - Shakira

Oh, what the hell... (-:

1. Per Gessle - “Mazarin” (hands down)
2. The Cardigans - “Long Gone Before Daylight” (brilliant)
3. Madonna - “American Life” (big grower for me, but I think it will be less-loved in the end than “Ray of Light” or “Music”)
4. Sarah McLachlan - “Afterglow” (not a huge fan, but this caught me off guard... great CD!)

That’s it... can’t even think of a fifth CD I bought last year! I disqualified “The Pop Hits” because it’s a compilation, and Texas’ “Careful What You Wish For” because it only came out in Canada in 2004, even though it was a 2003 release for the rest of the world. Other than these four, it was kind of a slow year for music, I think. But 2004 is shaping up to be a good one (-:

I mostly bought Older CDs this Year, BUT nevertheless:

Sylver “Little Things” - Belgians Rule!

Milk Inc “Closer” - Yeah Belgians Rule again!

Cardigans “Long Gone Before Daylight” - Damn Good!

ATB “Long Way Home” - I never was a fan of Andre, but this album changed it all. Many Great Songs with a Great female Vocalist, and some nice instrumental Chill Out trax too.

4 Strings “Believe” - Dutch Masterpiece, period

Wolfsheim “Casting Shadows” - Peter Heppner’s Vocals are Amazing, so is the music of this German duo.

Da Buzz “Alive” - simply good Pop with nice Modern arrangments

Bosson “Rockstar” - simply good Pop, quite Romantic....or maybe just corny, still good

Celine Dion “One Heart” - good Pop

Modern Talking “Universe” - Never get tired of Dieter, sounds very Modern, great songs too.

Seal “Seal IV” love his voice, great music

Dido “Life for Rent” - Still Boring, but somhow pleasant to listen to

Er, 2003, a SLOW year for music???!!!??? I REALLLY don’t think so, it was one of the BEST years in music in years!! You just had to know where to look....for proof, here is my list of FIFTY best albums, 20 best reissues, 25 best singles, and 20 worst albums of 2003...enjoy and discuss...BTW, I am from New York...I am aware of everything that gets released...import/domestic/etc...

@powerpoplarry: Oh, Annie! Thanks for reminding me... put “Bare” in as my #5 for the year. I can see by your list that you set the bar pretty low for purchasing music you like... I have this weird thing where I either love an album and play it ’til it starts to skip or never listen to it at all after I buy it... there’s no middle ground with me. So, for me, I usually need to know that I like a lot of songs from an album before I ’invest’ in it. As such, I never buy anything... (-: On the up side, the last album I regretted purchasing was Natalie Imbruglia’s “Left of the Middle” in 1998 (Melissa Etheridge’s 2001 album “Skin” comes close to a “regret”)! But I’m sticking to my guns on “slow music year”... Mandy Moore, Fefe Dobson, and Beyonce just ain’t my bag, but to each his/her own, right? I agree with your #1 single of the year, though! (-:

By the way, Larry, you really HAVE to check out ANET if you like power pop (especially since you seem to have a thing for Canadian artists (-: )... http://www.anetmusic.com ...try it, you’ll love it... (-:

So powerpoplarry, tell me something ;)
how do you really decide what is #29 vs # 35, and which are tied where? and how much time do u spend on these lists? ;)

Hey Roxtexanet!! No prob about reminding U about Annie, what I try and do with my list is try and cover all bases, and leave no stone unturned...

Actually, I set the bar very high in purchasing music I love, I know what it is I like and look for, plus I go by my hunches...I have very discerning taste in music...powerpop or otherwise...and I am quite picky, believe it or not...oh and I don’t OWN copies of everything on my best-of lists, I have to have heard it in it’s entirety, on listening posts, at friend’s houses, etc...oh and to make my lists, it has to have been released in that given year, copyright year on the CD itself...not from the year before, 2002, it has to be a 2003 release, domestic or import...I have my rules, LOL!!

As for playing CDs, I won’t play it to death, then I’ll start to hate it/get sick of it/etc...and I don’t want to hate something I love, know what I mean?? As for knowing the songs beforehand?? Not me, I prefer to go by my hunches and NOT KNOW ONE SONG before I check it out...that way, it is fresh, not spoiled, not played out...and it’s gems/rewards are on musical merit, NOT by what crappy radio stations try and tell you what to listen to...as you can tell, I hate radio + formatting...that’s what ruins some music for me...I don’t wait till I know 5 hits off a single record...what’s the point?? It’s played out, the thrill + freshness is gone!! Know what I mean?? I also don’t go by trends, I go by critical acclaim and my own hunches...I would never own a Natalie or Melissa record in my life, not a one...glad we agree to disagree though...BTW, have you heard those 3 records or are you just going by preconceived notions?? If, yes, don’t, toss em aside + have an open mind...they are not what you think...as for Rox being my #1 single, it’s the catchiest, most perfect, undeniable HIT that never was (in the US), but was in my own “head world”...

OK, I will check out ANET tonight, I’ll let you know what I think...if I want it, I can have it special ordered from Canada...and yes, you are right about me + Canadian artists (fave Canuck female: Amanda Marshall!!)...do they have a US/worldwide record deal?? Or just Canadian/domestic??

Kachina!! OK, here’s the deal, I have my own methodology in determining my lists...nothing you would understand, LOL!! It’s in the order in what connects with me the most, and process of elimination/covering all bases...leaving nothing out, no stone unturned...as for the time I spend?? Um, over time, I gather all the key releases together, go over all charts/critic’s lists/my collection, and play with the order until it feels right...around December-ish, after there are no new releases left to come out for that year...I spend around 3 weeks, or more, working on it, playing with it, with sheer determination, until it is right...I’ve been doing it for years, my best-of lists are very important to me before I move on to the next year’s stuff...sounds crazy but it’s a big part of my life...

powerpoplarry, finally I met someone who does that kind of lists as me. In 1989 I decided to do my own charts, because I was sick of bad music in first places, and I wanted a sort of journal of what I like in certain time.

That year, and 1990, I made a final year hit parade of my hobbies, I mean music, movies and soccer. But in 1991 I started my own Week Hit Parade, so every week I make a ranking of fave songs (English and Spanish), with my own rules as you do. At the end of the year I make a final list for that year, and I include movies and soccer again :-)

Some people don’t understan why I do this, and why I spend time in something like that. But this is important for me, I enjoy it doing it, and after fifteen years it’s part of my life already, and I guess it will always be :-)

Bare - Annie Lennox (not one bad song on that album, maybe the best I’ve ever listened to)
20 Jahre-Nena feat. Nena (wish Rox would have done something like that with their re-releases)
Paper Monsters – Dave Gahan (didn’t think he would be that great solo)
Afterglow – Sarah McLachlan (she’s always great)
Fallen – Evanescence (thank god there’s still room for new artists such as Evanescence)
Seal IV – Seal (what a voice...)
Life for Rent – Dido (simplicity can actually sound really good)

@powerpoplarry: Nope, haven’t heard Mandy’s or Beyonce’s albums, just the singles. I’ve never liked one single thing I’ve heard from Mandy Moore, but I suppose she could surprise me yet (the Barenaked Ladies did when they released “Maroon!”). “Crazy in Love” was fun, but I haven’t liked anything I’ve heard since from Beyonce’s album. My girlfriend has FeFe’s album... just sounds like a not-very-good Avril Lavigne (who isn’t all that good, either, in my opinion!) to me. “Take Me Away” and “Bye Bye Boyfriend” were over-exposed up here (she’s Canadian, after all) so I’m probably harder on her than I should be, but I just don’t hear what all the fuss is about. I’m very glad to hear, though, that you’ve found so much music you can enjoy out there.

Have you had a chance to check out ANET? She’s a well-respected song-writer/musician from Vancouver and her latest album, “Talented Girl,” is available on Sextant/EMI in Canada and on TB Records/BMG in the UK. I think you will like her because she focusses above all else on strong melodies. Some of her music is a little on the heavier side and some of it is more organic... she’s kind of like Pink or Michelle Branch in that sense, I guess. She’s the songwriter behind Tom Cochrane’s “Sinking Like a Sunset” and he’s recorded several of her other songs. She’s amazing, let me know what you think! You can stream some of her tracks from this page:

http://www.artistlaunch.com/artist4.asp?artistid=4466

Too bad that mp3.com went down... she had about 10 songs uploaded there... )-:

1. Per Gessle “Mazarin” - don’t have to comment
2. The Cardigans “Long gone beafore daylight” - really good album, I love it!
3. Texas “Careful what you wish for” - next damn good CD of 2003 year
4. The Rasmus ” Dead Letters” - really nice songs
5. Dido “Life for rent” - Dido is always the best!
6. Anita Lipnicka& John Porter “Nieprzyzwoite piosenki” - polish one but very good!
7. Blondie “The curse of blondie”.

I think that’s all I can say. 7 the best albums of the year! What’s the most interresting, in 2003 most of my favorite bands/artist had released albums. Gessle, Blondie, Texas, Cardigans - they were for very long time my favorite bands/artists. So I can say that this was very good music year for me :-))
All I can say that I miss all the time some new Roxette stuff. If it was done in 2003 that I would say that 2003 year was perfect( I do not count The pop hits).
