Lyrical Perfection

Yes—another best list thread. . .
What’s the best written Roxette lyric—your favorite, a turn of phrase that is just spot-on greatness? For me, the list starts with:
Been thinking about you
Without even trying I’ve done it
—Bringing Me Down To My Knees
(Beautifully stated—that’s being in love right there. Speaks to me every time.)

Into the rising sun

Tell me why it gets harder to know where I stand, I guess loneliness found a new friend - here I am!
Been thinking about you - without even trying I’ve done it
Some things in life won’t ever change - there’s a smell on a rusty chain...
..even the truth has got that bitter taste of a lie..
Every time I try to close my eyes you just enter my mind and you lay yourself down beside me... oh why?
Looking at you through the holes in the soles of my old brown shoes.
I’m staring at the ground, I wish I could bring the spring to your door, to the coldest side of town
Wherever you go, I’m going for you, oh, I was truly born to follow like fire and wood and paper and glue only a few were born to follow.
What’s she like? The yellow moon or the deep blue of the sea?
I don’t wanna know a night like this, the bad moon is shining over me. Don’t wanna feel like a lonely lover.
The sun is out, the stars are bright so let’s hang out
It’s a beautiful night. Let’s go to the park, that’s nice and green before it’s getting dark, you are the best I’ve ever seen, the clouds are slowly growing,
our love is slowly growing into a new new world.

Because I love the seesaw perspective of Happy Together—
. . .She was in love
He wasn’t sure
She wrote some letters
He tried to ignore
. . .She wanted a baby
But he wasn’t sure
He couldn’t make up
His mind anymore
I also like the idea behind these lines in Staring At The Ground—
I carry your wounded dreams
Like the devil’s deeds in the pocket of my jeans

I have to say that when Per, by default, gets shit for writing crappy lyrics it’s not always called for. Sure he can write some less meaningful lyrics from time to time, but for a non English native he sure puts out gems too.

“it’s been so long, since i first met you, since we made love, you know how time flys...”
“i still hear my heart beat, the very first time we made love, life was a lazy rest in the sun...”
“i pick up the phone, i’m dailing that number and my heart like a stone, waits for the tone, oh i can’t make it on my own, and i’ll never stop believing...”
“i know what is right, and this is so wrong, alone in my bed better off on my own, the tv in on but the colors are gone, and latley youv’e been painting my world blue...”
“my world my life.... ooooohhhh why..”
“i try to call but i don’t know what to tell you, i leave a kiss on your answering machine, oh help me please is there someone who can make me wake up from this dream?”
“here comes the weekend, a nother walk down that lonely lane, another sunday that feels the same...”
“you wear them so well, those innocent eyes, you’re puting on a wonderfull descise, i want you so bad i’m pushing my luck, it feels like being hit by a truck”

Likadant från dag till dag
Allting följer samma mönster

Letar mellan gamla strofer
Tror man det var annorlunda

@Tev: Yeah, you’re right... I’m one of the people guilty of slamming Per for some choice lyrics (the infamous, “Jefferson got hit by a westbound truck, I guess that didn’t make him look like a million bucks” springs to mind...), but these are rare exceptions, and nobody can say Per’s lyrics are boring or cliche, whatever you want to say about them. You’ll never see him writing, “Get on the floor, and let it go, just work that body, and let it go, just work that body, and grab somebody...” (God forbid!), a la Britney. And like you said, some of the people that wrote that kind of drivel don’t even have the excuse of English as a second language to stand behind.
My personal favourite: “Love always changed with the trees, the spring and the leaves, the waves on the seas, wilder than light the wind in your eyes led me astray, I never wanted it this way...” Very beautiful, loaded with imagery, just love it.

Too much to choose from!
Currently I like:
We’re very much the same, you and I
(the sweet hello, the sad goodbye)
Still waiting to get hurt, time after time
(the sweet hello, the sad goodbye)
When love lies in our hands, we run away and hide
And I can’t help but wonder why
The sweet hello, the sad goodbye
What’s she like?
The yellow moon or the deep blue of the sea?
Do you feel the same way you did when it was me?
What’s she like?

In my life there has been lovin’ and lyin’
And I don’t need another reason to cry....
In my life there has been so many changes, and I don’t want to be left out in the rain....
And also the entire lyrics from “I Was So Lucky”...love that song.
(I sat up all night, just to watch smile when you’re sleeping....).

@Thomas—Knowing how well Per can and does write in English—the sentiments, the turn of phrase—I think it makes me more disappointed when he goes awry with some of the lyrical choices. But you’re exactly right: “for a non English native he sure puts out gems too”.
From Anyone: Everything, more or less, is looking so meaningless—always liked the way that turns over in the song, beautiful.
Shane said on January 12, 2004 22:28:
I love this thread - what a great topic! I like Per’s lyrics. Sometimes, I think that because English is not his first language, he uses words and phrases differently than English-speaking song-writers, which makes his lyrics fresh, clean, and sharp. I mean - “kissin’ is the wet sand” is classic!
My favourites:
Staring at the Ground - the entire song, especially “I wish I could bring the spring to your door/To the coldest side of town”
Breathe - “My eyes look torn, they were so strong/I wore the crown, I wrote the song...”
Anyone - “Anyone who has ever kissed in the rains knows the whole meaning”
C!B!B! - “I find the heart but then I hit the wall/Crash! Boom! Bang!”

This is my favourite ever: ” This silly game of love, you play, you win, only to lose”. I think THis song has the most beautiful lyrics. There are so many other great Roxette lyrics I can think of. But that one just destroys me.

Ferdan, that is one of my favourite lines as well.
I was listening to HAND. there are SO many great lyrics here. like “7twnty7”....”mister do you know the way to salvation square”....ohhhh that is definitely a sexy Per song.
the best love song on HAND is “I was so lucky”. every single line in there is gold. I cried when I heard it in the car this morning. :P

Great topic MM!
I would definitely have to say the following:
==================
The Look:
Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer she’s a juvenile scam, never was a quitter, tasty like a raindrop, she’s got the look.
==================
Absolutely brilliant! I’m calling my next showjumper Juvenile Scam, I just love those lines. Edgy without being competely weird.
==================
Run to You
Sometimes I feel like driving (or is it dying? CD book says dying, but it sounds like driving), driving while I’m closing my eyes, moving in and out of hiding, trying to catch the truth in my life...
...take a walk inside my dream, a church, a lonely road, where all the people come and go...
==================
Pretty much that whole song has huge meaning in terms of the lyrics, I just think they are brilliant...this song speaks to me, hits a nerve (but a good one, ha ha)
Love to know what other think :)
