Jann Arden - well known in Canada and a wee bit in the US but she is not a superstar, which amazes me because she is very good. (in my humble opinion)
kiwijazza said on July 29, 2003 22:15:
I don’t know much about Australian music, being in New Zealand and all, but there is an Australian singer I think will go far (if she hasn’t already). Delta Goodrem. She has some really good music. :)

I remember hearing Jann Arden “Insensitive” on US Radio a few years back, and It was a Very Good Song :-)

Els Pets
They’re from Catalonia. Its singer reminds me of Per Gessle. I think they’re the catalan Gyllene Tider.
Shane said on July 30, 2003 14:18:
@Euro4ever - I know - she has several hits in Canada but never any further. Too bad - I think she is excellent (and so funny!)
Santi said on July 30, 2003 20:27:
I think “catalan Gyllene Tider” is Sau. The singer “can’t play”, he composes together with the guitar player, they have the most memorable song ever in Catalan (“Boig per tu”)...
What a pitty Carles Sabater died :’(
Other great catalan band is for sure Sopa de Cabra. If someone interested in pop music here has e-Mule or Kazaa... don’t miss the song “Els teus somnis”... another memorable masterpiece! :)

Within Temptation (known in the Netherlands, probably not elsewhere).

I quite like Me And Cassity (the new project of former Jeremy days singer Dirk Darmstädter)
His latest record is quite fabulous.

Heather Nova, good choice.
I wonder why she always looks so sad and like she´s suffering.

I love them. They are big here in Portugal:D

heather might be quite known but she isn’t known enough in my opinion! I love her music and haunting voice
Burke said on August 16, 2003 19:53:
Her music isn’t really bad but it’s not really exciting either. To be honest, I think she gets most of the attention because of her stunning looks. That is not to say that she tries to capitalise on that. Her music is very much, well, untrendy. :-)

For me, it’s two Canadian bands– the Tragically Hip, and Sloan.
MiracleMan said on January 21, 2004 02:11:
The Irish singer Sinéad Lohan only has one album that I know of called No Mermaid. Well worth a listen.
I also like an American band called Guster that’s starting to get a little bit of airplay here. Lost and Gone Forever is a great album, and their most recent is called Keep It Together. Good stuff.
I also love Patty Griffin’s album Flaming Red. Brilliant. Simply brilliant.
bleu_argente said on January 21, 2004 03:21:
Alex Lloyd, he is an Australian singer and has the most unusual voice, its brilliant. Best known song is probably ’Amazing’. One of those styles that’s favoured by both the rock stations and the middle-of-the-road stations, really diverse.

Hey, Jann Arden is awesome!!! She is HUGE in Canada, her home country, and a 1-hit wonder in the US, with “Insensitive”, a song she didn’t even write!! I don’t think she is bigger cuz of her inherent Canadian-ness, and also she is not of “model looks” + is “plus-size”, if you know what I mean. But I don’t care!!! I love her songs and voice and sense of humour!!
carbon_boy said on January 22, 2004 06:27:
@PowerPopLarry: And don’t forget about “Sleepless” - beautiful song! And the original intro for the international release of Dawson’s Creek: “Run Like Mad”.
Cheers
powerpoplarry said on January 22, 2004 06:30:
Yeppers, “Sleepless” is a fave, the regular version AND the single remix!!
Just curious, are you one of Jann’s “fanns”??

Can anyone remember the female singer that had the amazing song called: “Suddenly”. If I remember correctly, the song came out in 1997 or 1998. She was amazing, but I forgot her name already! :-(

@ Majdy
Rialto is quite well known i think though not as popular
there’s this local indie band in indonesia, Seurieus, who caught my attention coz they remind me of the eighties rock music era
zaine said on January 25, 2004 19:21:
perhaps LS or some of the other Canadians will know of her, I’m not sure if this artist is well known or not, but isn’t at all over here. here name is Susan Aglukark, and her songs are so beautiful!
mdekort said on January 25, 2004 20:10:
@ Freshold: Yeah, Blof is good!!!!!!
My other favourite is Within Temptation, don’t know exactly how popular / known they are around the globe, any others who known them?
roxtexanet said on January 29, 2004 08:37:
@MiracleMan: Thanks for introducing me to Patty Griffin! I’m quite liking her! Recommended for anyone who appreciates folky American music dripping with raw emotion.
@Zaine: Oh yes, Susan Aglugark has made her mark on Canada... who could forget “O Siem” and “One Turn Deserves Another” or whatever it was (I guess the answer is, “I can forget!”)? Not a huge favourite of mine, but definitely a talented and unique artist.
zaine said on January 30, 2004 13:39:
roxtexanet, glad to hear some one else knows of her. I think her work is great, and so beautiful. O siem, is such a great song, but dreams for you is so so emotional. My teacher used to play her cd when I was in primary school, then my dad bought the cd. now I have it ;)

I would now say ROGER CLYNE & THE PEACEMAKERS, from Tempe, AZ, USA...they used to be THE REFRESHMENTS, but evolved into RCPM after the “Freshies” called it a day after their 3rd album. Roger grew as a songwriter, and incorporated altcountry/Americana/rootsrock into his sound, and recruited his friends from the Tempe scene into his new band, one being his longtime sidekick/Freshies drummer PH Naffa. The 3 others being Scott Johnson from the Gin Blossoms (he left after album #3 when the Gin Blossoms reunited), Danny “Blanco” White (local session bass player), and lead guitarist/banjoist Steve Larson from Dead Hot Workshop.
The result is like The Refreshments, but with his new influences, same smart-alecky humour, but with a whole new dose of hard-won wisdom. That, plus, Roger is one of America’s finest singer/songwriters right now, bar none...Bruce would be impressed, so would Per!!
Currently, RCPM have 4 albums out, all on their own independent label EmmaJava Recordings (the Freshies were on Mercury, BTW). PLUS, they are the ONLY indie band to have all 4 albums debut in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Internet Sales Chart!!! Their debut, 1999’s “Honky Tonk Union” debuted at #1, their 2000 live followup “Real To Reel” debuted at #9, their 3rd release, 2002’s “Sonoran Hope & Madness” debuted at #3, and their BRAND NEW (and finest recording yet, possibly best album of 2004) “iAmericano!” just debuted THIS WEEK at #1!!! Check it for yourself on www.billboard.com if you don’t believe me...it’s a fine fine record!!
Plus, as great as their albums are, their live shows are the best, and the stuff of legend....the DVD that comes with the new album shows the proof in that...
Check out www.azpeacemakers.com or www.rogerclyne.net...these guys deserve a worldwide following, and it is growing!!!

Another “unknown” band from Canada that should have made it big is Blue Rodeo. They make such wonderfully crafted country pop-rock songs, though they’re mostly known here for their ballads, like “Bulletproof” and “Try”. I’m not a big fan of some country stuff, but these guys are awesome.
