Fan tribute album makes its way online
Written by suburber on March 11, 2002 to Fans.
BONN - It took some time, but it’s online now: The TDR-supported demos-from-fans project known as “Fanism!”
The idea, born here in The Daily Roxette’s “SmallTalk” section, was that fans wanted to record their own demo versions of Rox-songs as a very special tribute to Per and Marie. Bands like Gladstone, Kix and Melancholodic communicated via the pages of TDR. The result is a collection of 14 songs from Roxers all around the world!
While the project was originally intended to be released on CD, the high cost of distribution made the musicians decide to create a website instead where all of the songs are available for high-quality download.
The readers of TDR suggested names for the project and after a comment from Per, “Fanism” was chosen. Besides the songs and pictures of all of the artists, there is an opportunity to give a feedback by signing the Fanism online-guestbook. We invite you to take a look at www.fanism.org and listen to songs like “Here Comes the Weekend”,
“Sommartider” and “First Girl on the Moon.”

It´s great to have such a page to listen to other “Fan-Versions” and to have the possibility to release my versions. Thank you Suburber, you´ve done a great job!

My dear friends! THANX for your support! I want to say thanx to all the fans who recorded these songs! And of course: Best wishes to everyone in the world who is joining these songs... and to those who can´t join it. Well, you know that this is just a fun project. But nevertheless I really like this idea that Roxers from all around the world recorded their versions of Rox-songs. BTW: Everyone is invited to do the same! Send us your songs, no problem to publish them!
Lars-Erik, thanx to you and best wishes to NY!

If you are a musician like myself, then you will (hopefully) look at these covers and think they are cool, or at least that’s my opinion. It doesn’t matter if they sound good or not (and I’m not saying ANYTHING in either direction at the moment), but it must be understood that these are just covers and that the people that recorded them are artists!
It’s very hard to explain my point, but I hope that someone understands.
Oh, and also.... those who are basing these tracks saying that they suck, not to be an ass but do a Roxette cover youselves.... music is not an easy thing, and believe it or not, covers aren’t a cakewalk either.
Happy (coming up) St. Patty’s Day.... GO IRISH!!! (yes, I’m 1/4 Irish!) :)
ME! (lisa)
PS- A suggestion to those people who formed that website with those songs on it.... if any of you guys have a CD burner, you should find out if anyone would like to have a copy of the tracks, and then burn them a CD of it for cheap.... yeah, it’s not the best idea with copywrite laws and whatnot, but if someone wants it and if you want to spread it around, that’s how you can do it!!!!!!! (and you never heard that from me! psss...)

Ok this is bad. These songs are almost identical to the originals. There is no evidence of creative influence. They just played the song. An example. Bush covered the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and it sounds like a Bush tune in one sense and in the other you know its a Stone tune. These covers or “supposed ” covers are just horrible. I commend the bands for making the effort but, its not apealling to me as a Roxette fan. I wrecks the whole experience of being a fan. I can’t speak for Per and Marie themselves to assume what they think. The musician in me cringes when I heard those covers.

Yeah... I do have to admit they are a little on the more gritter side, if you know what I mean, but it’s all good :)

Hey guys,
I would like to say my opinion about the Fanism project, at least this is what I think about as a participant in it. As many of you know( or not so many) the idea for the project came out last year and the major thing was that this was going to be a demo fan tribute made by fans whether artists or not. Just for fun. I never sat down and took hours to create something, I just went in the studio( at the radio I was working in) and recorded the first Roxette’s songs that emerged in my mind and that’s it. No band’s playing, not even me on guitar or something. Just an acapella for fun. And here we’re back to the main thing: FUN and nothing else.
If someone wants to see me and hear my own material I’ve got a lot to offer but I have no money to pay for a studio and musicians and so on....So this was the easiest way to make something.
Thank U guys!
Rox On!

GezzlesGirl: As two of the artists on Fanism (member of Kix Sweden & a solo artist) I can agree with you that the versions are almost identical with the originals!
I can only talk for myself but I think the reason is that we are all fans of ROXETTE and when we are playing and writing songs they sounds a lot like ROXETTE!
If I’m recording a song written by Marilyn Manson then I think it should sound a lot like Roxette too and that’s because I am a huge fan of ROXETTE! :-)

Very cool, very interesting. Here’s a question, though.... will this album reach the ears of those who influenced it???
