People, help me!
The question on the History of the USA...
Why did President Jefferson buy Loisianna from the French? What was the reason? Was there any special reason?
Our teacher wants us to know the answer by the next seminar. We can’t find any reasons in our books... he didn’t accept any of our variants.
So may be some of you could help me....
Thank you in advance! -)

I was in a hurry when I sent the previous message and spelled a few words incorrectly. They should be:
Louisiana
Hispaniola
Mississippi
Sorry about that.

I think Jefferson purchased the land because it was a great deal. The sale was actually intiated by Napolean - he needed money to support his war(s) in Europe (primarily with Great Britain). He had planned to build a huge, world-wide empire, including the island of Hispanola, but when he lost control of that island, he felt did not need Lousiana. He then offered the land to the U.S.
Jefferson took the deal because the price for the land was so cheap, yet it doubled the size of the U.S. (allowing more space for settlers) and assured navigation of the mighty Missippi River, which was a major source for transporting goods.
Hope this helps.
