Weakest song on a Hits album

Out of all the MANY greatest hits albums Roxette has released, which song do you think is the weakest song to be released as a “hit”? :P I’m thinking Big L.

It happens that The Big L is one of my big big favorites! ;-)
(I also love the video!)

And I don’t think that there are really WEAK songs on a Rox HIT album, only songs to be liked more or less by different people.

But it does happen that some songs on Roxette collections don’t qualify as “hits”. For instance, “Vulnerable” on DBU wasn’t really a hit. The best it did was in Sweden, and a #12 on the charts isn’t that good a position. Also, “Salvation” on TBH or “Real Sugar” on TPH could be considered as pure flops!

well i think nr 12 is a very good position. Vulnerable was an amazing song and defenitly belongs to the category roxette hits, just like the amazing big L..

Well, I once read/saw an interview where Per said they didn’t want to include Neverending Love (#3 in Sweden compared to Vulnerable’s #12) because they wanted “international hits” only to be featured. However, “Run To You” and “Fireworks” for instance did a lot better in the UK and Germany than “Vulnerable”. Talk about international... Anyway, I would’ve put “Church Of Your Heart” (a US Top-40 single) on DBU instead of any of those if I was to compile a true greatEST hits in 1995.

June afternoon should have been replaced by Queen of rain in DBUGTTC
Dressed for success should have been replaced by Queen of rain and Run to you should have been replaced by You don’t understand me in the latest GH

“She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” was one of Roxette’s biggest flops, as a single. That’s why it was not included on any other compilation afterwards.

Anyway, they used to include as many singles as possible. Don’t matter how well they did in the charts.

June Afternoon couldn’t be replaced in 1995, because it was one of the new tracks, it wouldn’t make sense... And there was not room enough for 4 new tracks + 15 older hits.

I don’t agree about Queen of Rain (it was not a big hit either), I still prefer Dressed over that one. But I think DBU must be represented in the latest compilation, with You Don’t Understand Me instead of Run To You.

my thought is that u don’t need to have 4 new tracks on a greatest hits if this means to leave out Queen of Rain, which has been the last roxette’s song to reach the top 3 in the european single chart. June afternoon has probably missed to be in the top 20.

But when DBU was released they didn’t know how well June Afternoon will chart. Anyway, I prefer a new track on any compilation instead of an old song (good or bad) that I already have on other CD.

June Afternoon is one of my favorites, in fact, all 4 new songs on Don’t bore us are great songs. Too bad none of them charted good ..

@ alesluc

That’s the MTV European Top 20 VIDEO countdown you’re talking about. It’s based more or less on single & album sales, airplay, MTV playlists and general interest, I guess. It’s NOT a European singles chart where Music & Media’s Eurochart Hot 100 is.

But I take my earlier comment back: instead of COYH I would’ve put Queen Of Rain in the place of Vulnerable on DBU. Then there would’ve been 4 songs off Look Sharp!, 4 from Joyride, 2 from Tourism and 2 from Crash. And Queen Of Rain made the German Top-20, UK Top-30 and also peaked at #12 (like Vulnerable) in Sweden.

that really boils down to what you consider a hit, anyone for all intents and purpose was a flop, however the song really resonated with fans so leaving it off a hits compilation would have been stupid. If you really go by number nothing off of tourism was an international hit, neither was almost unreal. In fact if you wanted to be real picky nothing after SIMC save wicf and center of the heart would truly qualify as a hit. I do agree church of your heart didnt belong on DBU, but wasn’t the original intent behind DBU was that it was supposed to also be out in the states so having cCOYH on there made sense. Personally I would have rather they dumped the idea of a what sold the best compilation and did a poll of fans, it would have been interesting to see what they would have come up with culling album track, b-sides and singles for an album of 12 tracks with maybe 4 new songs

I’d say June Afternoon. The lyrics are just a little bit too ’bubblegum’ for me. And after the Crash! Boom! Bang! album this just sounded like a step back. She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore on the other hand, is amazing! I love this track, and it’s one of my faves actually!

I think the original intent and purpose of the song selection was to highlight those tracks that represent Roxette at that time. If we really are to be picky about real hits, then many songs from Look Sharp and Joyride would have flooded the album and that would made most fo the atmosphere too similar like.

New tracks are better than old songs, no matter how good they charted. However, I too would have picked “Queen Of Rain” instead of “Vulnerable” in DBU 95. Or “Church Of Your Heart” or “Fireworks”. I really miss “Fireworks” on hits compilations....

coyboyusa, but Almost Unreal was a UK Top Ten hit (#7), so it deserved to be included. In international terms, the song did better than Queen of Rain and TCOTH, for example.

Well, many times songs do not chart well but have A LOT of airplay..., at least in my country. Many times charts don’t reflect people’s choice. An example of this is Milk and toast and honey which was quite a big hit here but didn’t reach impressive positions in the charts. The same happened with The centre of the heart. Radios and listener’s requests are _very_ important when it comes to measuring success. Radios in Argentina have always been Roxette friendly, even nowadays they play their hits a lot.

Yes, it was the same with the spanish album: there wasn´t any numer 1 single but im sure Un Día Sin Ti was the most played song of 1996 in many latinamerican countries.

I have never really understood how they choose the songs for a Greatest Hits album. We are all sure about The Look, Joyride or IMHBL, but when songs like Vulnerable or Salvation are included, you really get confused. According to charts sales or airplay, there are only a few rox songs between 95-03 that became hits, i mean international hits, cos Sweden or part of Europe are always more open to play their songs.

Well, in the 95-03 period, I think the following songs can be considered hits:

1. You don’t understand me
2. Wish I could fly
3. The centre of the heart
4. Milk and toast and honey

In Argentina: Un día sin tí

I don’t know what to say about Stars, it was not released over here. “Alguien” was released instead and got quite a lot of airplay. i don’t know if it became a hit really, but many people who knows me remember that song.

“Un Día Sin Ti was the most played song of 1996 in many latinamerican countries.”

Really??????????!!!!!! Thats great if true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do they still play songs from that album in South/Latin America??
Thanks for reply.

Sorry, The_Pop_Hits, but what did you expect? Selling as many copies as Joyride or what? It’s just another compilation, the 3rd in a row. It was not meant to be sold massively. I wonder why people had so many high hopes for it.

The fate of this CD was quite predictible, no reason to be ashamed.
