Sweet Hello Debate on YouTube (Thomas v Marie)

Rightio. Just stumbled across this on YouTube.
I’ve no idea who this “Miami Vice reject” Thomas Anders is but he’s got some imbecile fan claiming that Marie’s vocals on “Sweet Hello” are no match for Ponytail Thomas.
Not to mention, this “individual” claims that Ms. M. Fredriksson is very over-rated.
Opinions . . .they’re like a-holes. . . everyone’s got one. . .just not everyone talks out of theirs :-p
Go for it MF die-hards, there’s the link below...click it...make a mess of this sakalag, you know you want too.... I’m looking at you Sparvogamarie :-p

I’m from Sweden and I have heard Roxette’s version, and let me inform everyone so there’s no missunderstanding; Marie’s voice is complete crap compared to this and she’s highly overrated. That’s why Roxette used this song as a B-side ’cause Marie couldn’t meet the standards of Thomas Anders’ version. I also wonder how Brother Louie would have sounded with Marie Fredriksson singing it...

I prefer Laura Branigan’s version. I always hated the version by Anders, because it’s weak and sound like a cheap synth-pop number from the early 80’s, the arrangement sucks. This person is very ignorant, because he supposes Roxette version was relegated to a single B-side due to Anders’ version. But in fact the cheap cover was released some years later. He should check the facts before to make such an statement.

What can I say: The sweet hello to Marie, the sad goodbye to that crazy person!

Thomas Anders is, or better was, a well known singer in Germany. He had his great time during the 80´s with the duo “Modern Talking”. They have some funny popsongs. But all in all, most of the material they (and he) did is crap. I prefer Roxette´s version.

Hehe, i think this person needs to get his/her hearing checked.
Was there ever a reason given why TSHTSG was never on an album?
Galadriel said on January 17, 2007 08:11:
*grin*
Thomas Anders (from Modern Talking) is/was singing a Roxette song. *wow* Didn’t know that!
At least this guy can sing compared to Dieter Bohlen, who can’t (and doesn’t do by the way ;-) ).
I like his version. Last year I was thinking about buying his new album, but after I pre-listened to it I didn’t buy because I found most of the songs to be too boring. Well, it’s always a matter of taste. :-)
btw. he doesn’t wear a pony tail anymore
Room_service said on January 17, 2007 08:48:
RobS, I think it is always the same reason: they recorded too many ballads for the album, so they left it out the definitive “Joyride” tracklist. That’s the explanation Per dropped in the “Ask Per” feature in the SOAP site. I remember it very well. It’s the same situation every time they record a new album!
fabian said on January 17, 2007 10:45:
I don’t think that’s the real reason. Ever heard of quality control? Seriously, TSHTSG is not fit as an album tracklist. It sounds half baked, the lyrics sounds mismatched at times (most doesn’t rhyme at all) and lacks the conveying emotion from what you expect from a ’Hello’ and “Goodbye’ (compared to really powerful lyrics driven ballards such as Spending My Time, Listen to Your Heart, Crash! Boom! Bang!)
And it sounds so eighties isn’t it? (No ofense, just noticed it)
Then again, it’s one of my favourite tracks from Rarities. The melody is great and I believe it has a potential as a hit single if better sound arrangement and new lyrics are splashed in.
About that Anders thing: not even a change of anything from the original. Spectacular? Nope, Marie did it better.
veneziano said on January 17, 2007 13:18:
Thomas Anders sucks, and this cover makes me really sad. And - it sounds like a demo!
I love the original, couldn‘t believe it when I first heard it on Rarities... Maries voice is amazing on this song, slightly slightly hoarse and a little bit severe, but even vulnerable.
Yes, the arrangement could be better, but those were the days...

sweet hello was the song that truly cemented me as a rox fan, i got on the roxette bandwagon real late, middle of the joyride blitz, and i had been scouring local record shops when i found the cassette single to spending my time, this song never sounded 80’s the production just never fit on joyride, its as if the said hey lets do something entirely different, as if they began with one direction for the album and then scrapped and went the let’s do a beatles like album. It’s always better when maries volcals are subdued and nuanced, she’s just got this voice that can emote so much loneliness and sad ness sometimes more so than her rockin’ fun edge. Thomas anders HA, and the indiot in the video just proves and eductaion doesn’t necessairly mean u know anything total idiots

First of all, Thomas Anders’ version isn’t a cover, however, anything that comes out of Modern Talking is shite and shite only. Modern Talking, the awful awful German ’80s band put out no less than 8 (eight) albums in three years, all of them containing the same song repeated over and over again. So Marie singing “Brother Louie” wouldn’t have been a problem as the complete lyrics are “Brother Louie Louie Louie”... Enough said...

@Modern Talking
Some Songs from Modern Talking are OK.
@The Sweet Hello.....
I love The Version from Roxette´s ” The Sweet Hello...”
Room_service said on January 18, 2007 00:18:
Thomas Anders’ version isn’t a cover? What did you mean to say?
The only more or less decent song by Modern Talking was “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul”. But I never liked the exaggerated gay-ish image they had. It was a bit embarrasing.
roxtexanet said on January 18, 2007 00:30:
Hmmmm... Marie’s voice is heard on US and Canadian radio every second of every day. I’ve never heard a Modern Talking song in my whole life. Says it all, for me!
tevensso (moderator) said on January 18, 2007 07:09:
A “cover” is when a different artist than who made a song famous does a song. The Sweet Hello was written by Per and sold. Therefore Thomas Anders, Jason Donovan and Laura Brannigan (and Roxette of course) all have recorded the song. Neither is a cover as they all are originals. Yes, Roxette’s version probably is a bit more of an original than the others, but still - not a cover in that sense. Are you with me?
Galadriel said on January 18, 2007 08:28:
:-D
It is necessary to know Modern Talking to be able to really really HATE them!!
And I thought only the germans can hate them that much, because we had been tormented by them the most. ;-)
And btw. thanks @tev for the explanation that the song was sold. Now it makes sense. :-)
RobS said on January 18, 2007 10:18:
I actually prefer the Jason Donovan version over Thomas Anders. I think that says alot :-P
the big D. said on January 18, 2007 10:55:
Oh yes, Thommy Anders... He is a freak.
He sounds very gay (and it doesn’t matter what he sings). The sweet hello is a very nice piece with lots of potential. And ’Sweet thommy’ knew it. so, he tried to become sucessful with a song, written by ’charts-machine’ per gessle...

Are you kidding me? I love this song, Marie sounds amazing and regardless if you are a fan of Marie or not you can’t deny that she sings this song superbly!
EmEx said on January 27, 2007 23:26:
you think that The Sweet Hello is half baked?
Listen to one wish that almost sounds like demo

I love TSHTSG, but someone here wrote something about bad lyrics on the song...and I agree a little. This is the only roxette song were i have thought that the lyrics felt kinda.....wrong...esp on the second verse..
