ABBA's Waterloo

I might be being very thick or stpid here, but does anyone know the meaning behind the lyrics of this song. As it stands it doesn’t make much sense:

“Waterloo, finally facing my waterloo” just an example.

I’ve heared that Waterloo is sopposed to be a City in Scottland!

No its not

Napoleon was finally defeated at Waterloo. It was pretty much a suicide mission for him as a lot of his men suffered from cold and perished.

So...if you are facing your waterloo, you are losing a fight of some kind. In the song it means that girl is losing her resistance to the attention to this guy :)

If you look at the whole lyrics it makes sense.
Basically using the battle of Waterloo as an analogy. Napoleon surrendered and lost the battle and if you read the lyrics carefully it is about someone who is being pursued by someone that they dont want to get in a relationship with, but because the person is so persistent eventually they give in and they fall in love. Thats my interpretation anyway. Oh, and Waterloo is in Belgium, where the battle took place....there is of course Waterloo station in london aswell.

My my, at waterloo napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah, and I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - finally facing my waterloo

My my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you

And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose

Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - couldn’t escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - finally facing my waterloo

Why did I think that Waterloo is in Russia???

I know Neil would give the interpertation of the song!!!! :-))

After reading the lyrics now I’m “alcohol-free” yes it does make sense!!

Oh I love that song!

did you hear Bananarama‘s version, it´s campy :)

Never heard it....

lol yet more proof that it isn’t only americans that are ignorant about geography and history LOL
