Forget Hollywood

Lately I kinda like watching indie or foreign movies. I am wondering if there’s anyone here like “outside hollywood” movies too? Let’s share!

Here’s mine :

- AMELIE (Well, it won’t be called foreign for french people of course). : A very simple but brilliant story (although my husband thinks it’s so boring). It was fun to watch Audrey Tatou, great editing and cinematography.

-RUN LOLA RUN : I like the directing, it’s like watching the music videos. The story also great, but the only thing that bothered me, that I didn’t think that Lola could solve everything in only short time, if I were writing the story, I’ll make that a little bit longer, but it’s still great anyway.

-LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL : One of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen, but also beautiful and very inspirational

-OLD BOY : Just saw that yesterday. It has a very unique and shocking stories ever. It’s about a guy that being kept in prisoned for the reason that he didn’t know for 15 years, but it’s not the shocking part, I just can’t ruin it now, you have to watch it to find out.

Well, that’s all I can think of right now.

I agree....i LOVE foreign films! I cant believe you saw ’Old Boy’. You should check out more korean films, as korean cinema is in general very imaginative and creative. Other Korean films I would recommend are ’Memories of murder’, ’My teacher Mr Kim’, ’Silmido’, ’Taegukgi’ and there are various others that i cant remember off the top of my head.

I also liked Run Lola Run, and have just bought another few german films which i havent watched yet (’Goodbye Lenin’, ’Europa Europa’ and ’The Edukators’

Amelie is also a great film

Wow! I also CAN’T believe that you saw Old Boy. Because to be honest, I’ve never heard it before until my husband bring that home. I wasn’t really exited at first, but when I started to watch it, I was like, wait a minute, there was something different in this movie. I haven’t watch any other Korean movies, but I must admit that this is one of the best Asian (or probably in movie in generally) that I’ve ever seen.
I’m gonna write down the other movies you mention. My neighbour own a DVD rental which only focused on foreign and Indie, so maybe they have those.
By the way, I heard the news that Hollywood was gonna remake Old Boy and it will has Thomas Jane on it, but dunno if it’s true. If it does, I think Nicolas Cage probably will be the perfect choice for Dai Su’s character.

Oh, I just remember other movies called Swimming Pool with Charlote Rampling. Anyone who loved mystery will like this one.

ive heard of the Swimming Pool one - i read the reviews when it came out they said it was a very good film ....

Majdy, well i lived in korea for 2 years so thats how i got into korean films. I joined a DVD rental place when i was there, so at a rough guess ive probably seen about 50-60 films. Ive also bought some of my favourite ones from yesasia.com, so i have about 20 at home. Other ones i really liked were ’The lawyers wife’, ’Sympathy for mr vengance’, ’sympathy for lady vengance, ’3 iron’, ’Please teach me english’, ’a moment to remember’, ’Everybody has secrets’, ’My wife is a gangster’, ’Ardor’, ’Oasis’, ’A bittersweet life’, ’Addicted’, ’Public enemy’, ’The Scarlet Letter’, ’A Tale of two sisters’.

I could go on and on....there are only a few korean films i have seen that i didnt actually like. They all seem to be very clever with intricate story lines to make up for the lack of budget that hollywood films can offer, and personally i’d rather have an intriguing story than special effects.

Just talking about it makes me go and look what has come out over the past year or so, but i think i’ll wait until i have a bit more money as i’ll end up ordering about another 10 DVDs and spending a fortune! By the way, if you do order anything from yesasia.com you need to be careful to get a version that has english subtitles! Some of the hong kong versions only have chinese subtitles.

By the way ’Taegukgi’ that i mentioned in the first post might also be known by another english name ’Brotherhood of War’ as i think thats what it was called when it was released internationally. My all time favourite korean film, and probably my favourite film ever is My teacher mr kim.

Oh I’ve seen Sympathy for My vengence, and yes it was good!!

I just love Lukas Moodysson films ever since I saw Show Me Love years ago.

I also love Together &, Lilya 4-Ever (that one is really good)

My Life As A Dog is also a great film!

I also love Japanese horror....

yesasia.com? never heard it, but thanks for the link. I’ll tell my husband about it, he’s so crazy with asian movies.

Anyway, I just seen The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. It’s really great, and I just love the chemistry between Bullock and Reeves, it made me want to see the original Korean version of it, anyone seen it?

When i was little I used to watch some foreign films, late 70 and 80’s.... many were popular in former Soviet Union where I lived. But now I live in US, and don’t watch as many

When I was young, I loved French comedies with Louie De Finese...or something like it
Also a French Comedy-satire “La Joen” (Toy) was a favorite of mine :-)

Spelling is off I know :)

Majdy, no i havent seen that one, but you can read about it here

To be honest, thats kind of put me off going to see the american film. I hate the idea of remakes.

Ah, thanks again for the link :)

Just want to update that I just saw A Tale of Two Sisters. Not really my fav, as I started to get bored with the idea of scary thing always involve woman with a long hair that cover her face, but the cinematography and the acting was great.
