Having to pay to use forums.

“Do I need to become a member to use the messageboards?: Yes. You will need to become a member of the site to use the messageboards.”
How petty are record labels becoming? They say they’re losing money because of downloading, yet album sales rose 1.3% globally last year. And now they’re charging fans to use a messageboard! That’s ridiculous! I’d gladly pay to use a messageboard of a band I love, if I had a credit card, which I don’t. Forums should be free of charge so fans of all ages can discuss their favourite bands/artists. Does anyone agree that this is petty? I mean... joining a fanclub is one thing (where you get all this cool stuff for a fee), but joining a forum should not be part of a fanclub - it should just be on the website - no questions asked!
If Visa Kopu decided to charge for use of TDR - would you still use it?

I don’t like the idea at all. I would leave. I’m sick and tired of paying contents on the internet.

I think I would... I already paid £10 this week to sign up to another forum I use... :)

“If Visa Kopu decided to charge for use of TDR - would you still use it?”....HELL NO! There’s 50 million other free forums, including the run to roxette forum which is pretty good and has less psychos than here. As for the news, well then we could go to roxette.nl. As Santi said, we already have to pay for too much on the net and it’s getting really greedy. I was at starwars.com yesterday and to look at anything good you have to pay $40 to join. It’s really stupid.

I’d paid to support TDR... because it offers the best news, and seems to be a bit quicker than roxette.nl with it (no offence to the fc) but I like the simple layout of TDR...

Just to make this clear.. (not that somebody starts to spread around that TDR will become a pay-per-read site:O): it was only a question, now don’t think that Visa has planned to charge for this site!
He does pay a hell of money every month to keep this site online and welcomes it if somebody donates money through paypal or whatever, but that’s all about it
(it is also a great “reward” to see you enjoy the site, you like the fastest-posting-of-news, to read your thanks, your feedback.. :))
I wouldn’t pay for a forum myself either, I might consider paying for news IF and ONLY IF the quality of these is TOP. After all, I used to buy newspapers for about 0,60- 1 Euro before and there are many people who read newspapers anyway.

I paid last night to support another forum, (I must be sick, 2 in a month) it’s not something I would do but these two forums have been a real sense of support over the past couple of weeks and I am happy to support them! :)

I think this is a really stupid idea on the part of the record company. People are not going to pay to post on a forum, they’ll just move on to a free, fan-based forum, and the label will lose the ability to moderate the most popular Garbage forum (i.e., keep off postings with links to free downloads, etc.). I love Garbage but they’re simply not popular enough to get away with charging their fans for information.

I don’t think we are just talking music forums, a paid forum can be for anything, such as the two I subcribe to for a medical condition.
per_mson said on April 4, 2005 07:26:
I wouldn’t pay either for a forum. I’m not so sure if I would pay for news either... cause if I can’t get the information for free on one site I most certainly can on the next one. But if it should happen that everything on internet suddenly starts to cost money then I would considder paying for news if they, as Judith said, are really top.

I would only pay for an Internet service if it were unique...
...and I can’t think of a single Internet service that qualifies under that condition.
nicci_The-Look said on April 4, 2005 17:08:
I wouldn’t
I love this sites that are free so people can talk to eachother without paying for it but it’s true that it takes much money to have a forum and good news
but I would leave if I hade to pay here and try to find a forum some where else with sorrow in my Rox-heart
;-) TDR 4-ever

I’ve nothing to really add to my above points. I’m still disgusted that I’d have to pay to use this site. I’m gonna hate having this great album, and not having an offical Garbage outlet to share my excitement (none of my friends are fans). There’s always here and other forums - but it’s not the same, you know?
I’ve been impatient and downloaded 3 tracks from this album. Bad Boyfriend, Run Baby Run and Bleed Like Me. They all take a few listens to get used to, but they’re great when you do. *even more excited about buying the album now* :) I’d gladly upload the 3 songs, if anyone wants. (but that’s all - I’m not downloading anything else. I wanna save some newbies for when I get the album in my hands... don’t wanna spoil it!) :)

Internet sites require server capacity, power and communications linkages. Those resources cost money. Someone has to pay that money. That payor must be the site owner, an advertiser, or a user (or some combination thereof). Determining who should fairly bear the cost probably depends on the nature of the site, coupled with the site owner’s desires and purposes.
Nothing is free. Everything costs something to someone, even if you get it for free.
Cerchio said on April 9, 2005 07:57:
But that’s one thing for a small website like TDR - and another for an official website by a band that’s signed to the biggest record label in the world, Warner. They get enough money from record sales ($100’s of billions a year), why they’re being stingy about a forum, I have no idea!
BTW have you taken a look at Garbage’s official site? Let me tell you, they surely couldn’t be running up huge bandwidth bills with a boring, plain website like that! lol! TDR looks better! :)
Jud (moderator) said on April 9, 2005 14:53:
Yes Oldag is right. Internet is not free.
The servers (which have to be TOP if you don’t want them to be down every week) cost money, the pieces (harddisks, ram.. ) that have to be changed sooner or later also cost money, the connection (T1, higher) also costs money, the people taking care of all this too, etc etc etc.
The story with the free hosting was nice in the beginning but it was obvious it wouldn’t be like that forever. These companies (lycos + alike) soon started to put banners that more or less pay for the cost of the servers.
I do pay to host my websites, pay for a service, just like a phone line or electricity.
But actually this garbage.com membership sounds more like a FANCLUB membership than just “paying to use the forums”.
They offer the chance to buy concert tickets before they go on sale to general public, exclusive downloads and contests, ask garbage questions, etc..
Roxette fanclub isn’t much different, just that the “ask Roxette” and other goodies are missing ;)

That depends on the amount of money that would have to be spent and also dependable on the amount of news.
I mean: in times of a tour or a new album (so when there is a lot of news), I am more willing to pay then in a time when there is not so much news.
