I want to ask you guys (and girls) as native speskers of English: do you ever say “go to sleep” -in the meaning “go to bed “, or is it a grammar mistake?

Yeah my mum would often come into my room and say “GO TO SLEEP” along with some other words when I refused to switch off my CD’s in my younger days!
I now tell the dog to “Go To Sleep”!

just at school and at uni we were always told that native speakers don‘t say “go to sleep “- the right variant is “go to bed “
so, now I know you do say so
thanx for replies

Hi Mitya. The phrase “go to sleep” in the song Go To Sleep is perfectly fine. If you are in bed but are still awake then you can say “I wish I could go to sleep now”: either “go to sleep” or “fall asleep” in this context are fine. Although if I was standing up and I wanted to go to sleep I would probably say “I’m going to go to bed now”. Hope this helps! All the best, Rich ;-)
