'Spyware'

I keep getting pop up’s saying that I have ’Spyware’ on my computer - and that it’s ’eating away at my memory’.

According to the symptoms they say Spyware causes, I know I must have it. It causes ’Slow performance, Slow load-up, slow internet connection’. I knew something was wrong once we got Broadband - it was supposed to be X18 faster than my old modem, but it appeared to be twice as slow.

So anyway. I download the stuff that they say will get rid of Spyware. It scans my PC. It says that I have about 300 Files containing Spyware Software. And then it sends you to a link that says you have to pay US$45 to download yet more software to delete the files.

Does anyone know where I can get software that will DELETE (and not just scan for...) Spyware for free? My computer gets very slow after a while, and sometimes it even crashes. I’d like to fix this now.

Thanx...

If it’s a pop up, then it’s simple ADVERTISEMENT to get you to part with your cash... DO NEVER PAY FOR SPYWARE REMOVAL! It is not needed.
You can download ’Spyware Search and destroy’ and also download, ’Ad-Aware’... one will find stuff the other will not.
Once downloaded, update then run offline, let it fix anything it finds, don’t worry... it will not remove anything needed by your pc.
If you find you run into problems you can undo what it has done.
Gimme 5 minutes, i’ll get the direct links.

And by the way... that program you downloaded probably put more crap on your pc that it will remove. ;)

download ad-aware from www.lavasoft.de
After download, install it.
When you run the programme, check for update first.
After that, run the programme to get rid off your spyware.
Works very good!

You need to download the top one, spybot search and destroy 1.3.

Don’t download the one you need to pay for. Click the one with green icon. :)

Do you have an antivirus program?

Is a good free antivirus.

yeah, I got those pop-up windows too and I downloaded the stuff they recommended but it didn’t really work, though I paid 29 $ I’m still arguing with this bloody company >:-(

ehh PC queen is out... where would I be without you Manda... my PC would be so f***ed up!!

Why the jiggins do you pay? Sheesh.
Those paid for programs are not always what they seem.

But my favourite word is free, so maybe i’m biased. ;)

Every single person with web access will get these popups... unless you have a pop up killer... it’s advertisement, nothing more.
I’d be a bit more careful who I give card details to, certainly wouldn’t be to someone I got to via a dodgy pop up!

’ad-aware’ or ’spybot search a destroy’ I use both as one sometimes doesn’t pick up all the crap that filters thru

Nope, you do indeed need both. They’re not overly big files, so not too bad.
There is also Spyware Blaster, that stops the majority of it popping on your pc in the first place.

its the little ’dialers’ that get installed that screws ppls, they think theyre dialing their normal internet but the little programme runs and dials a premium rate number and then first thing u know is that ure phone bill is thru the roof

If you don’t like pop-ups, try to use Mozilla Firefox. It’s a nice web browser, with many features out-of-the-box that Internet Explorer doesn’t have (pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, ’skineable’, to name a few.
It’s a technology preview... but considering how bloody buggy and insecure MSIE is, Firefox (despite its status of ’beta’ software) is far more stable.
It has a BIG community around it. If you like to be in the bleading edge, get now Firefox 0.9rc. If not, wait until Monday/Tuesday, when they’re planning to release the final 0.9 version.
It will import your bookmarks, history, home pages and such from MSIE automagically.
Have a look at www.mozilla.org
and http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38 (for forum/community based support)

(and of course, you can always go back to MSIE if you don’t like FireFox...)

Disclaimer: I’ve been using many Mozilla Foundation products since its beginings, and I think they are great. But YMMV. So please, don’t blame me if you don’t like it, or if something goes wrong...

I like Firefox... at least I never get those, ’Internet explorer has encountered a problem and will close, do you want to sent an error report to microsoft’.. or whatever the heck it is, errors. Grr burgers.

Diallers are the spawn of satan... if you have one of those OUCH. I always made a point on dial up to check my phone bill the morning after the night I last used the net.
The latest one is called hot_kiss and is a PAIN IN THE A$$ to get rid of.
One thing I like about broadband, you can’t get taken over by diallers... as long as you disconnect your phone line modem lead of course! Which I always recommend anyways, cause diallers do just that... dial... they do it all on their own, and the only way you know about it is when you get that nice fat phonebill dropping on your door mat!!

Although saying that... even with fort knox (Like me) still not 100% safe. Keep all your play safe proggies up to date, is all you can do...
Be safe out there. ;)

Now how utterly boring was that? ;) Can you tell i’m bored yet???
I really oughta be off to bed, before I put anyone else to sleep. ;)

*Crawls back under rock*

get urself a fire firewalll too

PestPatrol is another neat program that scans your PC constantly. I prefer that to Ad Aware, but that’s like apples and pears. And Firefox rules!
