The Billboard A/C charts... WTF?!

I’m a long-time chart fanatic, but of course I stopped paying attention to the chart years ago when my favourite music stopped appearing on it. Still, the charts - like it or not - index what’s getting airplay. But honestly, how has the adult contemporary chart gotten SO stale?! That particular chart has always tended to have a lot of hangers-on, but this is just ridiculous... Shania Twain’s released TWO singles from that freaking album since the one featured at #2!! Just look at the “Weeks on chart” column... it’s absurd! I’m really glad that Roxette aren’t a part of this mess, even if it means they’re shut out of the US market altogether... this is just embarrassing. No wonder everyone hates Matchbox Twenty!
This Week Last week Weeks on chart “Title,” Artist Peak Position
1 1 21 You Raise Me Up, Josh Groban 1
2 2 46 Forever And For Always, Shania Twain 1
3 3 23 The First Cut Is The Deepest, Sheryl Crow 3
4 4 36 Calling All Angels, Train 1
5 5 28 White Flag, Dido 5
6 7 44 Unwell, matchbox twenty 1
7 6 53 Drift Away, Uncle Kracker Featuring Dobie Gray 1
8 8 12 100 Years, Five For Fighting 8
9 9 20 Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Michael McDonald 9
10 14 8 You Make Me Feel Brand New, Simply Red 10
11 12 45 Big Yellow Taxi, Counting Crows Featuring Vanessa Carlton 5
12 13 8 This One’s For The Girls, Martina McBride 12
13 11 22 Invisible, Clay Aiken 8
14 10 26 Look Through My Eyes, Phil Collins 5
15 17 11 Here Without You, 3 Doors Down 15
16 16 24 Fallen, Sarah McLachlan 12

Very embarassing. Like you, I quit paying attention to the US charts when my favorite music stopped appearing. I remember the days when I knew most of the songs on the Hot 100. Now I hate most of the songs on the Hot 100. I really don’t even know much of them actually nor do I care. I know it’s just a bunch of R&B/Hip-Hop crap.
The AC chart is a disgrace. “Unwell” by Matchbox 20 has also been on the Hot 100 for over a year (53 weeks last time I checked). Is there really that much demand for the song now? *shakes head* It goes to show how screwed up radio is in the US at the moment.

ur talikng about adult contemporary..the major market for that form of music is women and men on thei early 30’3 - late 50’s thats why its stale but hey shania twains song was great!

@coyboyusa: Yes, I know that, but the A/C chart has been in existence forever and it’s never been THIS bad... the last year or two it’s been horrifying, no movement whatsoever. Back in the heyday of Roxette, for example, you’d see a good mix of songs with variation over time... no song would ever hang around the Top 20 for a year! But nowadays, that seems to be the *rule* rather than the exception. The Hot 100 charts at least have some action in them, even if 96 of the 100 entries in any given week are absolute shit...
@Close2U: Yes, I think you’re right! I used to love listening to the American Top 40 every week... there might be the odd song here or there that I didn’t like much, but mostly it was a great time. Now it would be torture to listen to the Top 40, but I bet the kids of today wouldn’t agree with me a bit!!!

Oh my God, I just noticed in the chart I posted above that Matchbox Twenty *CLIMBED* one spot to #6 with “Unwell”!!!!!!! Unbelievable!!

Don’t be suprised if Matchbox 20 return to #1 either. LOL. Last time I checked, they kept going up and down on the Hot 100 with “Unwell.” It fell out of the Top 40 and re-entered.

I make my own charts, that’s the only way I can be happy with charts :-)
