i think this site would be closed down according to them then ;)
kachina008 said on January 15, 2004 17:13:
hmm. i put that article coz I was amazed at the “censorship” status of a star saying “f**king”...even in a postive context. besides :P i like bono :P
DaminehGessle said on January 15, 2004 21:30:
I used to like Bono alot for his charity work. Because he used his voice and power to do something. I started liking him less when I realized he acts alot actually. There are Bob Geldofs, Brian Mays, Dave Stewarts who do charity and help out alot but don’t go out there promoting themselves. When Bono started getting all the credit in Newspapers for the 46664 concert, I liked him even less and mad at some point. Oh well!

Although I think this whole thing about saying the F word is just too much. They’ve made a big deal out of this. I believe we have much more problems out there to take care of than monitoring who says f*** and punish them.
coyboyusa said on January 15, 2004 21:59:
i stop caring about bono the day u2 came out with that pop mart crap....the man thinks he’s some significant person in the world he isn’t, forgive thrid world debt? screw that how about ousting all the dictators and warlords that created the debt poverty and misery in those regions to begin with. The man like scott stapp from creed has this god complex and its annoying,...it worked in 1986 its overused now
Jud (moderator) said on January 15, 2004 22:59:
for some reason I don’t like him either, I prefer more normal down to earth “idols” like yea, you know what ladies I am talking about :)

All I know is this:
There’s a law on the books that says you CAN’T say certain words on television in the United States. I don’t care WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE.
Long and short: Bono DESERVES a reprimand, fine, or whatever the FCC decides to levy against him. He don’t like it... he CAN KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT.
DaminehGessle said on January 16, 2004 07:04:
LS you don’t seem to be watching movies or television shows eh?! Those CERTAIN words are said at all times on American television!
LittleSpooky said on January 18, 2004 20:03:
Ooooooooooooohhhh
I get to piss off the WHOLE BOARD today. Thanks D... maybe you’ll rethink what you just said after this:
There ARE certain words that you will NEVER hear on television in the United States, outside of Cable TV. HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX, The Movie Channel and others are dictated by a slightly different set of laws. But on MAJOR networks (CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, TNT, etc.) words like this have been edited out and substituted for others.
These words are:
Shit
Piss
Cunt
Fuck
Cocksucker
Motherfucker
Tits
added not too long ago: Fart, turd, and twat.
You don’t hear them on Major Networks, you don’t hear them referred to on Major Networks. With one exception: Fuck. There are MANY references to that in terms of who’s sleeping with who or what during what show.
Now, D. You claim to watch US Television. Tell me you’ve heard THOSE words referred to on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, TNT, TBS and other stations. If so... please give me the time, date, and show, so I can verify this for myself.
And yes, I had to spell out each and every word. Impact, ya know?
Stormkeeper said on January 18, 2004 20:36:
Spooky what about ‘screw‘ and ‘pussy eating‘?
I remember on Sex And The City you hear such words all the time.
Jud (moderator) said on January 18, 2004 21:10:
:S what about all the american films? they edit them for the US tvs or?
btw, THOSE words are also not to be used here, thanks
LittleSpooky said on January 19, 2004 00:06:
Storm: Sex in the City DOES NOT appear on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, TNT, TBS etc. That is strictly HBO, and subsequently dictated by different rules than what Network stations are.
Judith: My apologies to you. I knew it’d get a response like that, however, there was a point to be made. Yes, when you see movies that have swear words in them shown on one of the above networks, it is edited out. Even American films. When they are shown, they are shown with disclaimers like this:
“This movie has been edited for time and content.”
Which means that sex scenes, blood and gore scenes, and foul language has been removed, and the movie has been edited to fit a particular time slot. So, a movie that runs 2h08m is edited down to fit 2 hours. Where that 08m went.. usually on the floor.
The reason that those are edited out is simple: Children. I didn’t say it was a good one. Kids are exposed to that kind of stuff every day, out in the “real world”, hence my comment that it is not a real good reason. I think that’s good, but when children are exposed to it anyway... kinda redundant in a round about way. But parents can control it in their homes with tv. Here in Salt Lake, you have to order Cable TV to get HBO, CineMax, SHOWtime and the others. Network tv is pretty much: Plug your tv into the wall and turn it on (rabbit ears help if you want good reception).
The differences between cable / net work tv:
No commercials on HBO
What you saw in the theatre is what you’ll see on your tv (unless it’s a special release, then you get BOUNUS FEATURES!)
Since there are no commercials (well, not one that you’ll see by Betty Crocker on there), then you don’t have to worry about upsetting the sponsors with content in movies. (Sponsors = “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, brought to you by Energizer. Energizer batteries, they keep going and going and going....”) And the list keeps going.

funny thing: I’ve watched singaporean and malaysian TV. on m’sian TV, the word “lesbian” was beeped out on Friends, when Ross finds out about his first wife.
when I went to the states, I though things would be different, but they really aren’t. I thought it was funny how they bleeped out words on the radio of certain hip hop songs so you heard “all the *beeep* be on my *BEEP* *BEEP*” :P
Stormkeeper said on January 19, 2004 22:06:
they are just playing “One” by U2 on Radio Hamburg and that is my all-time fave U2 song.
DaminehGessle said on January 19, 2004 23:29:
Storm: No kidding. One brings tears to my eyes just like Imagine by John Lennon. So does With ot Without You. But for different reasons.
kachina008: I was reading in the newspaper yesterday that China is still not ready to show FRIENDS on their tv due to sexual contents :).
DaminehGessle said on January 19, 2004 23:30:
Stotm: I was thinking I probably lied. There are too many songs that bring tears to my eyes. One is one of them :) and I love it.
