“Argentina remain on the charge for gold after winning 2-0 over England in their third game of the BDO Champions Trophy at Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre today, despite the English putting in a reinvigorated performance following their losses at the hands of Australia and Korea.

In typically English cold and blustery weather, the English team started strongly and passionately and put the pressure on the Argentineans who took the first five minutes to settle into their game.

It didn’t take long however for Argentina to find their form, and 20 minutes into the game, Argentina looked like scoring as spirited running by Luciana Aymar took the ball up to the circle, finding Alejandra Gulla whose reverse stick shot hit the cross bar.

England struggled to maintain possession as Argentina kept up disciplined and patient pressure, but the English defence was markedly improved from their previous games, and the Argentineans were unable to penetrate the goal, making the game scoreless at half time.

The start of the second half saw both teams still locked in impasse, however England’s stellar performance was ended with two goals from Argentina in quick succession.

Patience paid off for Argentina four minutes into the second half as strong play up the right wing by Ines Arrondo channeled the ball to Alejandro Gulla, who fought hard to get the ball past a scrabble of players, and celebrated as the ball rolled over the line behind goal keeper Carolyn Reid.

Six minutes later, Argentina displayed excellent teamwork as clever passing between Garcia and Aymar gave Marina di Giamcomo the ball to finish with a beautiful goal.

For the remainder of the game, Argentina controlled the game as they picked up loose passed and made numerous raids on goal, only stopped by great goal keeping by Carolyn Reid and organised defence from Mandy Nicholson, Kate Walsh and Fiona Greenham.

England still worked hard to create opportunities and Jane Smith became close to scoring after a fantastic attempt on deflecting the ball into the goal hit the cross bar.

Both teams played an impressive game with England working hard, however Argentina’s classy and impressive performance showed just why they are world champions.”

Sorry Vix :P

@Ferdan: apprently we’ve been bloody awful recently, thanx for the score line though.
You guys are world champions after all.
Not much coverage of hockey here :( even though its a popular sport.

They lost coz they never picked me ;)

Ferds: do you follow hockey at all?

only world championships or olympics,etc...
or international friendly matches might too, if I see one in cable, I leave it on.

but I´ve never seen a single league match :P

I like girlshockey ’cos it has a lot of common with football, with the exception that I can actually enjoy watching the legs ;) :D

LOL..... and when the hockey girls get hit by the ball or fouled they have good reason to be rolling on the floor in agony ;) unlike the pansie footballers ;)
