All I know is that I used to run for cover when I heard her sing. Her voice hurt my ears.

“that high and clear”??! when she reaches a level you cannot distinguish any of what she sings anymore!! it was sth like ’iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhh’ very very high.. yeah right she had/s the higher range, but that was/is disgusting for the ears!!
I have heard better, maybe not that high, but who cares as long as the voice doesn’t make my ears explode? I wouldn’t call that ’iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhhhhh’ SING.

I think only dogs can hear those really high notes that she sings ;)
I’m no critic.....I’m just a bitch ;P

BonBon: Bet me? I think millions of people are wrong about BSB/NSYNC/Britney Spears...
You can debate that till you’re blue in the face, but I’m bettin a few people here despise her as an artist. I’m one.
Jud (moderator) said on August 18, 2003 05:58:
using “artist” to describe her is an insult to the real ARTISTS ;)

Millions of people followed Hitler, but bonbon said millions of people can’t be wrong...
ummmm
anyway, mariah had a good voice... when she didn’t try to show-off... but it’s a shame she didn’t have good songs to sing

About that of singing high notes and the “iiiiiiiiiiiiiiihh” sound, it’s something perfectly normal. When you reach very high notes (nothing that I’ve ever done, but it’s something that it’s explained in singing techniques books) the more difficult to make a difference between vowels. My singing techniques book explains it better:
“The vowels change their sound up through the registers. In the low part of your voice - the chest voice - sung vowels sound more like spoken ones. The higher you move through the registers, the more the different vowels start sounding like each other, and in the high register it is often difficult to distinguish between the vowels. You should not prevent the vowels from merging with each other, as this may trigger off constriction. If you make a strained attempt to hold on to the sound of a vowel as it sounds in the lower part of your voice, high notes often can not be reached.
The sound of the vowels in the high register is referred to as “merged sound”. The more pronounced a merged sound, the more classical the singing. The merged sound of vowels is one of the reasons why words in opera often become harder to follow the higher the notes sung.”
And about that of her reaching the highest register, I doubt she’s got any real record, because there are many opera singers that reach far upper notes than her.

Mariah does have a great voice but I’ve got to say when she sang those “good” songs the majority refers to she bored me...When she got onto the hip hop side I began to buy her albums!
Don’t know if she lost the voice & frankly don’t really care: she sounds certainly good to me!

I think that her voice has become more whispery in recent years. So yeah, I think she’s lost some of the power she used to have. Am I the only one who loves when she hits those really high squealing notes like in “Emotions”? That’s one of the reasons I like her.

Mariah has and had the best voice ever :-)).
No, I really love her and her songs .. I think it’s not that she lost her voice .. these days she sings differently .. but she still can sing her old songs as good as ever.
It’s always some kind of taste if I like songs of an artist or not .. but to say, that Mariah Carey has no voice .. puhh ... sorry to say that but Maries voice is a vw and mariahs voice is a ferrari ;-P. (just to make a comparison) .. don’t missunderstand me .. I love Maries voice (of course), but she could never sing that songs .. not many could sing Mariahs songs ...
And for the songs .. Mariah wrote one of the best songs ever .. I love to listen to that song ... “Hero” has a wonderful melody and a wonderful lyric ..
And it’s soooo fantastic to listen to Mariah live, because its so astonishing how good she can sing live .. I can’t wait for her gig in October :-)))

She had several difficulties in reaching her young voice, but fortunately now she is having a great voive again!, of course high notes are not for everyone, it is considered that high notes bother some people because they do not have the capacity to support high notes, that’s what mariah tends to do by whispering somtimes..
But also she is an artist who writes her own songs and she also sings the songs with feelings, her incredible voice (not compare even to opera sigers because of the techniques, but pure as a gift).
Thank you Mariah for your songs and feeling and keep going on!!!!
Of course let’s not forget her great body...wowwwwwww

yes, they are... so is her “I’m-so-beautiful-and-sooooo-in-love-with-myself”-appearing all the time.
she may have a very good voice, but not the best in the world in my opinion... and I don’t like what she does with that voice at all... her songs are unintresting to me and rather of the kind that drives me mad if I’m forced to listen to them.
Hate singers who wanna show which tones the are able to sing by doing excessive coloraturas and to howl like a sad dog...
no, I would not care if she would stop “singing”...
