I can’t think of many bad covers (at the moment), but I can think of a cover I think is better than the original...Duran Duran’s version of Perfect Day, by Lou Reed.
——————–
@coyboyusa - I haven’t heard anyone else sing that song, but either way, there’s no way you can top Queen. ;) So I agree.
Vixzter said on June 24, 2003 04:57:
Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi does indeed suck!
As for Mariah Carey she covered a Def Leppard song called Bringin’ On The Heartbreak that is also extremely bad and should never have been allowed to escape!
Stormkeeper said on June 24, 2003 07:08:
what about Britney´s I Love Rock‘n Roll? Could be worst if u ask me.
yes I think Duran2 version of PD is better than older ones.
oshtay said on June 24, 2003 07:16:
Storm - agreed about Miss Osbourne - her version is awful. As for Marilyn Manson, Tainted Love was bad but surely Sweet Dreams was MUCH MUCH WORSE.

a swedish guy made a cover of It Must Have Been Love. that wasn’t any good at all!!!!!!!
Lennon said on June 24, 2003 09:00:
There was a really unneccessary version of “Eternal Flame” in the German charts last year (or was it the year before??).
Nothing really new, female voices again and the same arrangement, a little bit more up to date.
Not any creativity at all.
But when we talk about coverversions, I saw a really great version of Micheal Jackson’s “Earth Song” on Onyx yesterday. At first I didn’t notice it was this song.
roxcyn said on June 24, 2003 14:45:
Celine’s version isn’t that bad..it is okay :). Why do you like Cyndi’s better?
Hm, a bad cover? Eh, I’m thinking Mariah Carey’s cover of “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)”. I really hated that...
Counting Crows “Big Yellow Taxi”? It isn’t too bad..compared with the original...kind of poppy :D.
Atomic Kitten? I like their cover of “Eternal Flame,” really.

Actually, you can shoot me if you wish, but I actually LOVE Kelly Osbourne’s cover of Madge’s “Papa Don’t Preach”!! It’s like powerpop, somewhere between the Muffs and PJ Harvey and Courtney Love, and she didn’t mess with the melody at all!! I think you’re just bothered she touched the song, period!! I DO agree about Marilyn Manson’s wrecking of Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love”, as well as Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”.
Don’t forget Limp Bizkit’s wrecking of George Michaels’ “Faith”, and Orgy’s take on New Order’s “Blue Monday”!!
I would say Celine kinda ruined Cyndi’s/Roy’s “I Drove All Night” AND DEFINITLY wrecked Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself”!! UGH!!
Oh, this crap country guy, Marc Chesnutt I think, he ruined Aerosmith’s/Diane Warren’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”!!
And American Idol runnerup Justin Guarini, he sorta ruined Texas’/New Radical Gregg Alexander’s “Inner Smile”, partly by calling it “Inner CHILD”!!!
I’ll think of more....

@vixter - thought so, it just looked so funny, I had to comment.
I rather dislike Tim McGraw’s cover of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”...
coyboyusa said on June 24, 2003 20:59:
i JUST LOVE DURAN DURANS cover of perfect day its amazing..that and thank you by led zeppling 2 amazing covers
powerpoplarry said on June 24, 2003 23:57:
I agree with Shane, Tim McGraw SUCKS and he ruined “Tiny Dancer” with his whiny voice, UGH!! He is the epitome of cookie cutter crap mainstream country. The guy doesn’t write a damn song, nor does he play a single instrument!! He is as untalented as they come. And the guy is a whiny weaking, his dad, baseball legend Tug McGraw should be ashamed of his son, and I’m sure his wife, Faith Hill, bosses/pushes him around, LOL!!
roxtexanet said on June 25, 2003 02:05:
I heard Atomic Kitten’s version of “The Tide Is High” and nearly vomited... it was shite, plain and simple, no other words for it. Truly, truly awful.
@Powerpoplarry: I had NO idea that that Justin Guarini loser attempted a cover of my favourite Texas song (I agree - Gregg Alexander is amazing, but Texas were already one of my favourite bands before he worked with them... hence, roxTEXanet!)... thanks for the warning!! AND he screwed up the name?! Jesus, show some respect for your superiors, ha ha ha!!
powerpoplarry said on June 25, 2003 03:47:
Yeah, Virgin US is now trying to push Atomic Kitten on US audiences. I heard their stuff before, they range from harmless to truly awful. I guess their Blondie disaster is in the latter category, huh??
Oh, and Swedish girlgroup PLAY, they are really good, as they take some previously crap songs, as well as some classic ones and make them good (from crap) and their own (still good)!!
Covers on “Play/Us Against The World” (2001/2002)
1– “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” (Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell)
2– “Hopelessly devoted To You” (Olivia Newton-John, from Grease)
3– “Is It Love” (3 Of Hearts)
Covers on “Replay” (2003)
1– “Honey To The Bee” (Billie Piper)
2– “Whole Again” (Atomic Kitten)
3– “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell, Ashford + Simpson, Diana Ross)
All these covers are downright charming, as well as the rest of their recordings, I really LOVE Play, and they are getting even better, the only young girlgroup with any TALENT + STYLE, could it be they are from Sweden????
Hey RoxTEXanet, so THAT’s why your postname is what it is, LOL!! I really love Texas, Sharleen Spiteri has such an AMAZING voice, just melts in your mouth, doesn’t it?? ;-DDD Yep, I tried the Justin CD, just out of curiosity, my friend had a promo so I popped it on my discman, and he reminded me of 80s singer Paul Engeman (from Device and Animotion Mk 2), but I nearly vomited when I heard him ruining “Inner Smile”, let alone changing the title!!!! THAT is sacrilege, really!! Maybe it wasn’t him, maybe it was Clive Davis!!! I saw the credits and I saw Gregg’s name listed, so I’m like COOL (I collect anything he touches), then I saw it was “Inner Child”, and I’m like, NEW GREGG SONG?? Then I saw he had nothing to do with the production, then the thought scared me, maybe it’s “Inner Smile” changed?? Lo and behold it WAS, those yeah yeah yeah’s, and I felt sick to my stomach, but he does a good Sharleen imitation though!! Justin DOES have a strong voice, don’t get me wrong, but the changing of the title, why???? Coulda been a str8 cover, but no, changed, why??????????? Yeah, have some respect for your superiors!!! ;-DDD
But yeah, Gregg is a genius, and Texas are just wonderful, I know a new hard-rocking Texas album is on its way, YAY!!!

Anything covered by Mariah... I can’t stand the bitch.
“Bizare Love Triangle” from New Order Covered by Frente... Grrr hated it!!
“How soon is now” from The Smiths covered by T.A.T.U Ugh!!!!!!! The music on that is awesome but the singing has the same effect on me as someone running their nails down the chalkboard. GRRRRRR!!!!!!
Ah!! And Manson’s “Sweet Dreams”
Shane said on June 26, 2003 22:39:
The worst cover would probably have to be when my best friend and I sang Pour Some Sugar on Me at a party a few years ago. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but now.....
Powerpoplarry - your comments about Tim McGraw - lols :-)))))
powerpoplarry said on June 27, 2003 05:36:
Yeah, Mariah’s covers are both maddening and predictable. I went to hs with her and we are acquaintances, so I can’t say anything bad about her personally. I hear her Def Leppard cover is actually pretty good though. Hated her other covers, most of them anyway...
Frente’s cover of New Order was OK, compared to Orgy’s cover of Blue Monday!!
And I LOVE t.A.T.u.’s cover of “How Soon Is Now”, better than Love Spit Love’s cover of the same song!! The music is great, and I have no prob with their vocals, you just have to get used to them, that’s all.
Shane, LOL about YOU covering Def Leppard!! Did you tape it at all?? I’d love to hear it sometime!! I did a mangling of “American Pie” when I was drunk at a bar in the UK and I did “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake at a karaoke bar with my sister and her husband. She says I sounded like Bob Dylan doing it, LOL!!!
And what I said about Tim McGraw?? I wasn’t being funny, that was the truth!! The guy is a whiny no-talent loser!!! And I would GLADLY announce it over the PA at an arena he is playing at that night, give his clueless 40-year old housewife fans a rude awakening to the truth about their so-called hero!!!
Anarem said on June 27, 2003 06:04:
@Shane:
You sang Pour Some Sugar On Me at a karaoke bar?!!! Me too!!! Must be a Great White North thing. I got sarcastic clapping for my efforts. My friends cheered me on, though. :-)

But if he comes back again
Tell him to wait right here for me
Or just
Try again tomorrow
I’m gonna kick tomorrow
Gonna kick tomorrow
Jane says
Have you seen my wig around?
I feel naked without it
She knows
They all want her to go
But thats O.K.
She dont like them anyway
Jane says
She’s goin away to spain
When she gets my money saved
She’s gonna start tomorrow
I’m gonna kick tomorrow
Gonna kick tomorrow
She gets mad
Starts to cry
She takes a swing but
She cant hit
She don’t mean no harm
She just don’t know
What else to do about it
Jane goes
To the store at 8:00
She walk up on St. Andrews
She waits
And gets her dinner there
She pulls her dinner
From her pocket
Jane says
She’s never been in love
No, she don’t know what it is
Only knows if someone wants her
I want them if they want me
I only know they want me

Orgy I like, “Blue Monday” was pretty cool. Though the last 10 years has been like cover heaven. Zeromancer put out a very cool rock/goth version of Real Life’s “Send Me An Angel”.
Back to T.A.T.U, past “All the things she said” they whine a bit much. And I do like them, but the only thing good about their cover was the music. Their singing was like get a gun please! I’ve heard a few covers of “How soon is now” which just should not have been done.
Shane said on June 27, 2003 16:10:
Anarem - maybe it is a Canadian thing - not sure why we decided to pick a Def Leppard song. We did not get sarcastic applause from the crowd - they just stared at us in complete silence.
The people at our table cheered loudly but the rest of the crowd appeared to be absolutely stunned. Of course, we were in a “country and western” bar. I highly recommend it - go to a town where you know no one, stop at a bar, make fools of yourselves, drive off and never return!
powerpoplarry said on June 28, 2003 06:30:
OOOO, sounds like fun, Shane!!! I love Canadian stuff like that, LOL!!
Shane said on June 21, 2003 17:55:
Not sure, but I think it was John Cougar Melloncamp who covered Buddy Holly’s Rave On - that was painful to hear.
