No promotion in USA for TBH?
Pascal said on April 10, 2003 15:33:
The Ballad Hits will be released on April 22nd but the fact that http://www.hollywoodandvine.com (Capitol USA) doesn’t include the release in their “New Releases”-section intimates that there won’t be much promotion for the album.
bunny said on April 10, 2003 17:16:
not surprising at all
they spent all their $ promoting lisa marie prisley this month.
bunny said on April 11, 2003 01:02:
if you check out capitol us’s site, the link to roxette goes to www.roxette.se but it’s adverising the pop hits but they are releasing TBH ;-)
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 11, 2003 05:39:
Well, considering there’s obviously a lack of promotion, we can do something. I encourage everyone who visits other message boards make a post about ’The Ballad Hits’ coming out April 22. It might not be the best promotion, but it will at least give some attention to the release.

Sad. Not even a single single ... :-(

Why don’t the american members here in the US join the Capitol Records forum site if it’s possible for us to create a Roxette thread? Then, there we can have a thread for us. This way, it’d be easier to show them there are interest concerning Roxette. We canannoy them a bit without going to far and get banned. :-). What do you guys think ?
Try to come up with a user name that’s related to Roxette in some way so it’s even clearer that we are Roxette fans.
I’ve registered already to be able to reply to their webpage’s forum.
Take care!

This the e-mail i sent to Capitol Records USA:
Hello!
My name is Carlos E.,i live in New York and i’m a Roxette fan. I’m very happy to know that Roxette’s new compilation album, The Ballad Hits
(TBH)is set to be released on April 22nd here in the USA. However, i really would like to know if there will be a single sent out to radio stations and if there will be any kind of promotion concerning the album release. It would be very sad if the album is released here in the USA and it doesn’t get the attention deserved to promote it so people and fans can know about it. So far, it seems like there’s nothing going on concerning promotion. If that’s the case, only hardcore fans like myself will actually know about the release. I hope a single, probably “A Thing About You” will be sent out to radio stations and its video to music channels.
Also, i would like to know if there are plans to release the “Pop Hits” compilation album here in the US later this year since it has already been released in most of Europe, countries in Asia and Latin America.
P.S. : Is it possible to create a Roxette forum in Capitol Record’s website? If so, can i do it myself or the webmasters are responsible for that?
I appreciate the attention and time for reading and replying to this e-mail. Look forward to the reply. Take care.
Carlos E., New York.
Let’s see what i get as a reply...
Later!
Carlos E., New York.

Speaking of US promotion. Where’s Lars or US Roxette King Fan? I haven’t heard much from him lately, have u?
powerpoplarry said on April 12, 2003 07:35:
Hey, are you talking about me?? LOL!! Yes, I shall go to Capitol USA’s site, and see if I can make some noise, but it seems they usually don’t care about the little guys like myself. I’m curious how they will react to Carlos’ email.
BTW, yes they are promoting Lisa Marie Presley, BUT based on the song she performed on Letterman, “Lights Out”, she deserves the promotion, as she was terrific!! Like a combo of a voice like Amanda Marshall and the country rock musical attack like Lucinda Williams. Oh and her looks and stage manner are reminiscent of her dad’s.
Capitol should have some other cash to devote to Roxette’s US version of TBH, preferably TV commercials, as that’s a tool used to promote hits collections/anthologies these days. Hey, it worked for Cher!! Her new hits collection just debuted on the Billboard album chart at #7!! No new single, just TV ads, oh and that TV concert. With Rox, they should send a promo single of ATAY to Adult Top 40 radio, as they are a bit more open-minded and adventurous than Adult Contemporary. Regular CHR/Top 40 won’t touch ATAY, as kids these days have no clue who Rox are, BUT Adult Top 40’s audience probably do, as they grew up in the 70s and 80s, and know those decade’s hits, and are hip to new songs. Hell, This format is the one playing Robbie Williams’ “Feel”, so ATAY would definitely work there. I’ll try something....
Roxrider_USA said on April 12, 2003 23:00:
@Jason: Thanks! Let’s see what happens.
@larry: Good formula. :-).
Carlos E., New York.
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 13, 2003 02:53:
Larry, good points about the U.S. radio formats. I agree that Adult Top 40 would be the only format that would touch ’A Thing About You.’
I also agree that tv promo ads would work as well. Keep in mind that Cher’s “Very Best Of” compilation debuted at #7 based on sales the week BEFORE the concert aired.
What Capitol USA needs to do is show a few tv ads for ’The Ballad Hits’ like Capitol did internationally to give the release some attention. Also, I think a discounted price for the compilation would help as well - to draw some interest. Sell it for a standard $9.98 price like Virgin did with Robbie William’s release in the USA (where it debuted at #43 thanks to this discount).
But no single = no airplay = no sales.
Also, it would be nice for Capitol USA to send the ’A Thing About You’ video to VH-1 and other music video channels. I’m sure VH-1 would give it a shot.
Then again, *smacks self* I am dreaming of course.

(Okay, I just spent the past 10 minutes rambling on about this situation to find out that my damn computer froze! ARGH!)
So...basically here’s what I was thinking:
The April 22 is less than a week away. LOL. I guess I did have a small hope to see some type of promotion going for the album. Hell, we don’t even know if it will be in stores next Tuesday. We’ll only know when we walk in and see a heart full of raspberries on the CD shelf! It’s become so hard to believe with the release date pushed back time and time again.
I’ve been thinking with the date coming upon us...So let’s assume it gets released this Tuesday...Exactly what is the point? Is Capitol USA “testing” the US market with a major label release of Roxette for the first time in years? If so, what’s the point of testing the market if there’s going to be no promotion? To see how many people will buy it? I can’t complain though. It is nice to see a US release come about from Roxette even if it is with no promotion. But as Capitol USA may see...many of the US fans already bought the compilation on import months ago. I still will buy a US copy (or 2) just to support the release. It’s understandable that Marie is not well to do promotion. But what about Per? Perhaps these compilations are just a test in the US market for a real future release? And why now after all this time are we finally getting a MAJOR label release from Roxette when we should have gotten one years ago, at least starting with Have A Nice Day?
Anyway, all these things are running through my head tonight. Haha. Maybe it’s the weather here.
What do you guys think about the situation?
Jackie_Radiorox said on April 15, 2003 04:53:
Alright, so promotion is expensive, but damnit, a few posters in music shops, a few commericals on MTV would not be bad!!!
Capitol, get yer ass in gear! :P I realllllllllllly hope at least the single gets on the air... would be nice to hear something NEW. I think the last single I heard here in Miami was Almost Unreal. Oh, and Un Dia Sin Ti.
So pleeeeeeeeease? 9_9
coyboyusa said on April 17, 2003 10:13:
lets really face it per has said their interest in america isn’t a priority anymore...emi’s interest in promoting them here doesn’t exist anymore....its over for them here unless something incredibly tragic happens ...liek i don’t know emi gets firebombed lol
kidding
but honestly this is futile ...american radio isn’t geared towards real music anymore 90% of it is rap r&b and hip hop..i mean cummon what chance do roxette have here whne crap like 50cent..basically a career criminal with a record contract ...grace the cover of rolling stone. its over

powerpoplarry said on April 19, 2003 09:02:
Well, I have some great news!! It’s actually happening and it IS getting released here on Tuesday!! In the new issue of ICE magazine, for collectors, with Led Zeppelin on the cover, there is a HUGE ad for TBH listed, right on page 2, in the Capitol/EMI ad, along with a new Duran Duran singles box!! It also says “In Stores Now”. I was at HMV, looking for TPH (they have it on order, priced at $19.99, none in stock, whatta bummer, won’t be buying any more new releases, including Madonna’s “American Life” or Fleetwood Mac’s “Say You Will”, until I have my hands on TPH first, came back from the city empty-handed), and I saw the TBH ad, and I asked if it will be in on Tuesday, and the manager said absolutely, yes, many copies are on order, ready to be shipped and arriving Monday, so it IS happening and being released, woohoo!!
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 20, 2003 03:47:
Wow. A huge ad for it? LOL. Interesting that such is the case considering there’s no other promo going for it.
I guess the good news will be finding it in store on Tuesday. :)
powerpoplarry said on April 20, 2003 06:50:
OK, I’m being serious here, tonight, I SAW TBH in TOWER RECORDS near me!! TEN to FIFTEEN COPIES!! They musta put it out early, but I held it in my hand. It’s the heart full of raspberries, but around it is a slightly different colour though, a bit tannish, or off-white, not milk-white. It has a top-spine, like all major-label releases here in the US, but it has a clear peel-able sticker, saying something like “15 of the international group’s popular love songs, including the new ’A Thing About You’”. There must be some decent promo going on, for Tower Records to heavily order it in stock, let alone put it out early!! Sooo, Capitol US IS following through, and did. Let’s see if there is any TV promo...my one bummer is I didn’t see ANY import copies of TPH, and I made a vow t0o myself that I’m not goping to buy ANY other new releases until I have TPH, with the EP, or all 19 tracks combined on 1 disc, first!! The closest I came was HMV having some copies on order, priced at $19.99, but their importing was delayed cuz of the war. I came home from NYC Friday empty-handed, whatta bummer!!
LittleSpooky said on April 20, 2003 11:29:
So how about TPH? I have TBH... bought it from Virgin Megastore here in SLC about 4 months ago...
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 21, 2003 03:20:
Powerpoplarry, thanks for sharing the info! Very good news to be able to find it in stock! So wow...it really has happened then? YAY! It should be interesting to see if the album will be able to chart on the Billboard 200.
All the U.S. fans out there, keep us updated on if and where the release is being stocked in your area, along with the number of copies in stock and the price.
Jackie_Radiorox said on April 21, 2003 06:53:
I’ll go check out our Virgin Ripastore tomorrow or Tuesday to see what the hell is going on (I call it Ripastore because the prices for a CD there is INSANE!!!!) Along with the 5 other CD places that happen to be on the same street. *makes sure to gas up the car. ;)*
Roxrider_USA said on April 21, 2003 17:58:

It’s out. Lars-Erik found a few measly copies in the back of Virgin NYC. The store was full of Maddie though. But oh yeah, she’s not on EMI, I forgot.
Roxette-atic said on April 22, 2003 18:30:
What does “measly” means? My english is not the best...:)
tevensso (moderator) said on April 22, 2003 19:08:
“Poor” sort of. Very few, lonely CDs. They were marked “Includes the #1 Smash It Must Have Been Love!”. SO we’re guessing no radio single for ATAY.
Jackie_Radiorox said on April 22, 2003 20:41:
You know, pisses you off to be a Roxette fan really. Why release something along with Maddona’s CD? I went to about 5 places non of which had the CD 4 out of the 5 told me it hasn’t even arrived yet. I didn’tget achance to get to Virgin Megastore because A) I am not paying a ton of cash for it and B) I had shit to do today, and C) I am going to call before I go on an all out pilgrimage again. , BestBuy, I took a look at the computer when the chic there was helping me out and it looks like out of 8 stores in South Florida, there are only about 12 copies of the CDs being put out. And NOT 12 per store, but 12 in total. One of the stores doesn’t even have Roxette out on the shelf at all. And hasn’t in about 3 months.
For anyone that can’t find it go to www.bestbuy.com
Shipping is free and the CD is $14.99
I am one pretty pissed off person right now. Why bother putting a CD out without any promo AT ALL?!
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 23, 2003 03:50:
Exactly Jackie. I’m still trying to figure this out. If people can NOT find it in stores in the USA, what is the point of a domestic release? They are just better off ordering the import online when it’s released many months before the US release. How exactly does this benefit both Capitol and fans? If there is no promotion - whether it’s a radio single, video, or ads - for the release going, the average music buyer will have no desire to purchase the release. So in actuality, Capitol makes little or no profit on this release. *confused*
Roxette-atic said on April 23, 2003 08:23:

Hi!
My name is William Navarro and Im from nyc. I just want to know why you release “The Ballad Hits” by Roxette if you dont want people to buy it? No promotion, no single, no adds no NOTHING? Isnt that what a record company is all about?
Fom a dissapointed Roxette fan...

i saw the ballad hits in sam goody today 2 copies...no bonus ep. I noticed something very odd tho....the stickers that seal the album from theft said the ballad hits remastered
is it true...is it mixed better than the european releases?
Mfan28179-Jason said on April 27, 2003 03:18:
I also noticed this “original recording remastered” sticker on the spine when I saw my one and only copy at Sam Goody. I’m not quite sure what this means. I’m assuming that the material on the international release is just as good sound quality as the US release. If you check in the booklet, you will see the material was mastered in New York City. So I imagine it’s all the same.
ditroia said on April 28, 2003 03:26:
Simple.
I haven’t checked it out on MY EU Ballad Hits.
But on my AU Pop Hits, when u put the cd i nPC and that shitty player comes up it says
“GM Remaster” On soem of the tracks, {the older ones not the newer ones]
GM Means George Marino, hels the g uy that remastered most roxette albums.
So the newer tracks aren;t remastered but the older ones are.
Dave
P.S. the player also lets you know which songs are single mixes etc. Thats the onyl good thing about it.
LittleSpooky said on April 28, 2003 03:56:

Does anyone know if the US version is different than the foreign version?
I imported mine from Europe when it was released, but I hate to buy the US version if the booklet is the same.
Are the pages the high quality glossy pages?
I know it doesn’t have the bonus CD, so I will probably buy it for that reason, just to have both versions. Plus, I hate NOT to buy it since EMI is FINALLY releasing Roxette material again in the US.
I went to Best Buy yesterday and they only had one copy. It was $14.99
