Revised SmallTalk "Off Topic" forum rules

The Daily Roxette has evolved considerably since it was first launched by Visa Kopu many years ago. One thing has not changed, and that is our core mission: TDR endeavors to be the primary and most reliable source of news about Roxette – and to foster a sense of community amongst Roxette fans with internet access.

Some time ago, Visa and the staff of The Daily Roxette created an off-topic forum at the request of many of our readers. By not insisting that all threads be directly Roxette-related, and by providing – just as an example – a thread for our gay and lesbian readers to talk to each other, we felt we were furthering our mission (see above).

At approximately the same time, we attempted to make our readers aware of our desire to implement and enforce a “no-flaming” policy. This too was in sync with our desire to create a sense of positive community.

In providing a forum that allows individuals to post messages without first being “approved” by a moderator, we must rely on our readers to excercise good judgement as to what is appropriate and what is not. We’ll take this opportunity to AGAIN remind each of you that TDR chooses NOT to publish any post that contains a “flame” directed towards another reader/subscriber. Simply put, it’s OK to write “I disagree with you.” It is NOT OK to write “You must be an idiot to say that.”

Certain topics are, unfortunately, so controversial as to only create discord amongst our readership. This does NOT further our mission (see above). Thus, TDR is NOT – for example – the appropriate place to conduct a debate on the topic of anti-abortion vs. a woman’s right to choose.

This is not to say that such topics are not important – or that Roxette fans are not also people who have other things they feel passionately about. It is simply to say that the editors of TDR feel that our “newspaper” is not the appropriate place for such heated discussions to take place, as it’s just TOO EASY for such a debate to devolve into name-calling and “flame throwing.”

We feel strongly about the “no flames” policy, yet we are understaffed, and do not have time to read all posts. Dear reader, given the circumstances, and our limited resources... the only solution we can arrive at it – if we are to continue to provide this “Off Topic” forum, is to place some restrictions on it.

Therefore... should you be interested in discussing a topic that by its very nature is obviously controversial... a topic for which people usually “take sides” (e.g., war, religion, politics...) then please find some OTHER site to do so. TDR will continue to be a place for discussions of a more light-hearted nature.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

It was a good debate,
i´ve been flamed in the Roxette forum more often than in the offtopic forum...
And i know i´m harsh sometimes, but i never say “fuck you” or things like that... but someone insulted me that way in the Roxette forum and nothing happened.

But ok, it’s a “private” forum after all...
let’s talk about Per fingernails!!!

To LS and everyone:
Its another thing ppl being unfair, stoopid, anti (in general) and another thing to shut them up...shut US up....ok some are going out of control but sometimes we all do!

To me SUDDENLY The OFF Topic Turned BORING!!!

Very boring!

Very interesting post. Personally, I haven’t minded these discussions, however, I’d grown tired of the mud tossing back and forth between some members. You know who you are on that. I welcomed the chance to discuss how I felt, yet I will be honest, everytime I read stuff on here I felt like I was being singled out because I was an American and that it was the President of MY country that decided to start the war.

While many of you here would say “Oh no, we’re not Anti-American, we’re Anti-Bush”, you don’t realise that most of the time, your comments ARE anti-American. Sometimes, I’ll sit here for a couple of hours, writing ONE post because I’m thinking about how *I* would feel if someone said these things to me. So, I would try to word things where it wasn’t lumping one group together (all gays are alike, all black people are alike, all Palestinians are alike) because THEY’RE NOT. They are different, just like ALL Americans are different.

It’s very difficult in times like this to sit down ANYWHERE (even in my own country) without being blasted by what’s going on. Another thing I’m tired of is the anti-semetic feelings I’ve seen. So what if Hollywood’s controlled primarily by Jews. What does that have to do with CNN, FOX, and the like? THEY ARE NOT HOLLYWOOD. You say that they are biased? Tell me ONE news company that tells the truth all of the time. Tell me ONE that DOES NOT sensationalize ANY story. You can’t. Know why? No one would watch the news. That’s just the way it goes.

The links that have these pictures attatched. Not many of them are current. And I’ll bet a lot of them were stock photos taken prior to any of the wars and just passed off as war photos. Some of these people were killed by their own countrymen. Stuff the KGB was rumoured to do. (I say rumoured because I don’t have proof 100%, as I know no one personally who’s had family taken by the KGB of the old Soviet Union).

The long and short of my post, nothing. Will it stay up? Not really sure, not really caring. I just wrote it because I needed to get it off my chest. No one cares what I think or feel, that’s a given in my life.

Off-topic is Off-topic,and we’re free to talk about what we want, not what people says..........
I think there’s nothing wrong with debates,it’s good to hear everyone opinions about things like that, and, like you say,we have to do it in other forums,is also a point were i don’t agree, cuz, most of us have our friends here ;)

Looking at the amounts of reply some of those deleted forums did get, I think that a lot (maybe even most) of the TDR-readers wanted this topics to be there!

Moderator(s):
Next time it would be handy to ask the readers if they also think that some threads should be deleted or at least tell that you are about to delete the threads (so don’t tell it afterwards).

And, as stated by Wendy, the forum is called OFF-TOPIC, so it must be possible to talk about everything which is Off-topic.
An other forum is for a lot of TDR-readers not an option, since TDR is the only forum we are visiting and are not intending to search for an other forum.

I wonder why those threads got deleted instead of “Closed” or “Archieved”...

A lot of people, pro and antiwar, spent a lot of time and passion in those threads, posting a lot of interesting info that’s now lost.

Good move . . . . .

The threads aren’t deleted, we will discuss the future of these threads within TDR shortly. We haven’t done this to make people mad of course. It was just getting out of hand.

Well, i´ll show my point of view so you consider it.
It’s kinda complex to some people, but in the end it is the most simple of the things.

For me when something so cruel in this world happens, like the current war. There has to be a “footprint”, a “mark”, a “trace”, a “memory” in every place on earth. So discussing about it is our way to put our “mark”...
Discussing about it will not save us from this war, discussing about it will not avoid this war, but it will leave a tiny “mark” in every person that reads it, in every person that never had the chance to discuss about it... or in every person that never bothered in reading about it.

With this we avoid this war to be forgotten in the “mass memory” of people.
With this we have the chance to give every person tools to make an own conclussion about the subject, and with this we may save the future of the human race. Are you thinking that i am exaggerating???
Sadly my way of thinking about the human race is not the same of everyone else I know, we are already fcked up, but we can save our children or our grandchildren.... how? informing, educating, teaching about the things that should not be.

Every person that read those threads... one day will remember about it... and will have something to teach their children about it, and about war and everything bad. That children, if taught well, will grow up with the correct mind for the subject... and the more children with the “correct mind” there is, the less chances of repeating the history we will have.

In our lives we are not given a lot tools to control our side of humanity, so i think we need to use the few that were given to us.

i have more to explain but can’t explain it like i´d like to do it using English :(

well, so in resume.... i think it is necesary to have the threads in everyone access.
It’s ok if we can’t keep discussing about it... but what’s been discussed doesn’t have to dissapear.

All Spanish speaking people have been called “pigs” in the Roxette forum, and I’ve been insulted when asking for an apology on that... isn’t that flaming?

LOL pigs? when? ;)

@ Santi. I agree it’s not something we wish to publish. It’s been removed. Thanks.

Ferdan, beautifully said! It was one of the most beautiful posts I have ever read on TDR!

The last like I noticed light-hearted! Light-hearted as in flowers or love? The sun and the skies? They make me cry :(
