EUROVISION SONG CONTEST!!
ally77 said on March 11, 2003 15:25:
Okay we are approaching that time of year again when the one, the only Eurovision song contents takes place, what do you think? Do you have any faves? Any year that you remember?
Okay I admit it I am a Eurovision freak, I watch it every year (yeah call me a sad person with no mind but it’s a laugh!!)
The best entrance I enjoyed the most was Euro 2000 in STOCKHOLM when the Danish 2 some the “OLSEN BROTHERS” won with there song “Fly On The Wings Of Love” or in Danish “Smuk Som Et Stjernskud”. I still love then now xxx
Other past faves of mine have got to be “ABBA” (okay I don’t remember the show!!), “Friends” for Sweden and “Katrina & The Waves” for the UK.
This years entry from the UK is called “Cry Baby” by Jemini... personally I don’t like it!!
You can listen to the UK entry on the RADIO 2 website @
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/eurovision/
and for those die hard fans of Eurovision for all the lastest gossip visit the official website @

isn’t it true that very few peopel who ever win eurovision go on to have successful careers?
Stormkeeper said on March 11, 2003 19:11:
Yes that´s very right
only Abba and Celine Dion has archived success later on
ally77 said on March 11, 2003 20:42:
The Olsen Brothers from Denmark where already quite big before they won, but they have become even bigger sinice the win...
Santi said on March 11, 2003 21:11:
Euh.... Viva la diva! :D
I think she hasn’t been around for a while.
Anyway, I think the purpose of EUROVISION was never to create superstars all around the world, but it has lost it’s sense, like many things.
Not so long ago there was a rule by which they could just sing in their national languages. Now they can choose English if they want.
So that means they could never become internationally known since in your own language very few people gets that (Rammstein, Alizee, Eros Ramazzoti... and now I don’t remember anyone else :D). It’s hard. Remember that Celine sang in French for Switzerland, but we all know her since she changed her language... That the year ABBA performed English could be used, etc etc...
I think Eurovision doesn’t mean that much anymore. To watch people singing in English I can put MTV or whatever else, I don’t need to wait for one year for that. The funny thing about Eurovision was the mixing of cultures.
SAD

For me Eurovision its a symbol ...its the only night of the year that We as in Europe become interactive, we become 1
Santi said on March 11, 2003 21:21:
For me it’s a masquerade. And it’s having pretty bad effects on Spanish musical scene :(
vaxjoe said on March 11, 2003 21:27:
come on one night every year cant affect that much a whole countries music scene :p
Santi said on March 11, 2003 21:36:
It’s destroying it, because there’s a tv program running during 3 months to choose the ones that are going to represent Spain in Eurovision.
It’s a brainwashing show that makes “karaoke stars” that are almost the only ones that sell records in Spain nowadays.
The “funny” thing is that WE ALL are paying that, since it’s TVE (the national tv). And professional musicians are not only losing their markets because of this, but they are also forced to pay the promotion of this kids that get the attention in the main TV channel of Spain, TVE-1, during something like 10 hours weekly :O
vaxjoe said on March 11, 2003 21:37:
oh i see..now i get it..luckily in Greece we only have one night when we get to vote one out of ten songs and thats all
Santi said on March 11, 2003 22:01:
OMG, “Smuk som et Stjernskud” was translated as “Fly on the wings of love”????? :DDDDDDDDDDDD
“Beautiful like a ray from a star” is the correct translation I think (Any dane??). How can we complain about Gómez Escolar in Spanish? Everyone does the same!!! :DD
Long life free translations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ally77 said on March 11, 2003 22:27:
So do I, but I do agree with Santi in a way, I prefered Eurovision when people sang in there own language, it was good cause I tried to guess what they where singing about!!
vaxjoe said on March 12, 2003 02:44:
There was a great song once by Boyzone but i think it was when they were hosting the event so i dont think the song was competing
“Boyzone
Let The Message Run Free”
In this world of confusion
Under the same sun
Save us from complication
Let the message run
I was speaking so many tongues
In a voice loud and clear
We’ll bridge communications
Let the message run
So do I have to talk to another?
Can we speak as one?
And if we talk to each other
We should all be
We should all be
We should all be one
One
Let us run free
Oh let us see (oh let us see)
and through the eyes of a child
Let the message run free (free)
Let us run free (let us run free)
Oh let us see (oh let us see)
Through the eyes of a child
Let the message run free
(let the message run, let the message run)
Through the wires like lightening
Over land and ocean, yeah
No more in isolation
We should all be
We should all be
We should all be one
One
Let us run free (let us run free)
Oh let us see (oh let us see)
Through the eyes of a child
Let the message run free
(let the message run, let the message run)
(Let’s run free...)
Let us run free
(Oh, let us run free)
Oh let us see
(oh let us see)
Through the eyes of a child
Let the message run free
(let the message run, let the message run free)
Through the wires like lightening
Over land and ocean
No more in isolation
Let the message run free
Let the message run free
Let us run free
(let us run free)
Oh let us see
(oh let us see)
Through the eyes of a child
Let the message run free
does anyone remember what year was that?

Yes, Boyzone was never competing. But their show was great anyways.
This years German entry is just a load of crap! I know you guys must think each years German entries are crap, but this year its even worse! ;-)
I love watching the Eurovision Songcontest, as it is fun to compete against each other. One thing that annoys me though, it has got to do so much with politics who is going to win. Germany never gets that many points really, as the germans are one of the most hated people in Europe. And sometimes even they had great songs.
I also love the Oolsen Brothers, I actually just got their Album with Flying on the wings of love about a month ago, that shows that they really left a lasting impression on me! ;-)
powerpoplarry said on March 12, 2003 10:03:
I actually heard that Olsen Brothers song on Fred Bronson’s Billboard Chart radio show on the net a coupla times, and it is REALLY great!! I’d LOVE to get copies of their albums + singles, but no one here stocks their stuff as imports. Maybe no one here stocks stuff from Denmark, I have no idea why. I want DAZE’s second album on Sony, 2000’s “They Came To Rule”, but twas not released outside Denmark, and I have trouble ordering it. Same with Toybox’s second album, “Toyride”.
Um, about Eurovision, we don’t get it here in the US, no one airs it here, and we here don’t have satellite TV, as I figured that is the only source, right?? Um, most of those songs are utter crap, but there are usually a handful of cool little catchy tunes. I read once how it works, the voting and elimination process, that p[eople hear the eligible songs only once, but it didn’t come off clear, the process. Please explain, somebody. We here in the US have nothing like it, except maybe those crappy shows American Idol and Star Search, and now Nashville Star.
Santi said on March 12, 2003 17:42:
You vote on the phone some minutes after all the songs have been heard. The votes are “per country”. So if I vote, it’s gonna be reflected as some vote from Spain. Then with all the votes they give 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 votes to some of the around 25 songs competing.
They make it a kind of show and every country says their votes and you can see the songs going up and down in the table. After the last tv-host from some country says the last points, the song with more votes wins and that TV (because it’s national TV channels in competition) will organize the next one.
Some countries also do their own competitions to look for the song, like for example Sweden with their Melodifestivalen. Anywa, when I was living in Stockholm the song that won was “Lyssna till ditt hjärta” by Friends (that I think were sued by that song cuz it reminds too much an ABBA one). Anyway, the song that won in Sweden was translated for the Eurovision into English... what is, at least, sad,
Edited:
cuz Swedish people chose one sung in Swedish, not English...
ally77 said on March 12, 2003 18:55:
“Listen To Your Heartbeat”, I thought it was a great song for Eurovision, I bought the Friends album, although I don’t think I played it more than once... there music is very much like ABBA!!
*** LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTBEAT!***
LISTEN TO YOU HEARTBEAT
IT WILL TAKE YOU HIGHER
FOLLOW YOUR EMOTIONS
I KNOW YOU’LL GET STRONGER,
LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTBEAT
THE FELLING WILL GUIDE YOU.......
HOLD ONTO DEVOTION,
I KNOW IT’S INSIDE YOU.....

celrox said on March 12, 2003 22:52:
the song listen to your heartbeat is a stolen one the original is from also a eurosong from belgium called Liefde is een kaartspel. in english love is a game of cards, afther friends had performed at the songconstest there was a court matter and the outcome was that the song of friends was nearly the same as the original.
celrox said on March 12, 2003 22:58:
has any of you heard the dutch entry of this year I must say for the first time in years we have a good song most years we had ballads but now we have a up tempo song. Just look at kazaa under esther hart tittle one more night.
powerpoplarry said on March 13, 2003 08:22:
Sounds like an interesting contest and process, but I’m wondering if it would go over well in the US, and my guess is no, but it really could. Yet, we aren’t Europe, so we are not eligible to submit songs, artists, or to cast a vote. I wish it was aired here, like the Brits are, just to see the action.
Um, that Gina G song “Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit” was a big hit here in the US, a #12 smash, but she is a 1-hit wonder in the US, oh well, as her whole album was enjoyable I thought. Cool cover too, Gina with her whole body covered in chocolate!!!
:-O
Santi said on March 13, 2003 09:58:
@Powerpoplarry: It’s not a matter of being Europe. There are some countries (country) taken part in it but that is not european, like Israel. Well, Israel is also in UEFA and other European organizations. Anyway, it’s not “Europe”. Eurovision is a organization of national TV Channels. As far as I know there is not even such a thing in USA, since all you have are commercial TV Channels. (tell me I’m wrong, please!! :S).
It’s not just this “song contest”. Eurovision makes it work like a team of televisions when international events happen, like for example the broadcasting of an international football (soccer for you) match would be organized thru Eurovision.
I think Eurovision in itself, the organization, now it has another name, but I’m not sure. Anyway it has lost a lot of sense since the private tv channels (Like Canal +, RTL, Sky...) came to live. I don’t know exactly when it happened in the whole Europe, but in Spain it was in the beginning of the 90’s.
It’s curious how Eurovision song contest was so much “important” and now, from the 90’s, it’s becoming discredited. Italy, from the nineties doesn’t take part into Eurovision. They had to do this “all in English” thing to make it more marketable, they had to start things like Operación Triunfo in Spain to make people become interested.

Eurovision is such a laugh. The voting seems to be really political, which means the U.K will get very few this year i should imagine. I will guess that either Sweden, Norway or Denmark will win again. It’s been in the north of europe for a fair few years now.
the_phantom_roxer said on March 15, 2003 10:03:
@chester, i think its gonna be lithuania seeing as latvia won last year when it was in estonia...
i doubt the UK’ll get any votes this year, but hey, one event of the year we actually feel a little bit european!!!
@stormkeeper, oh god, i have vague recollections of seeing that on totp.... i must have been about 10!
powerpoplarry said on March 15, 2003 10:35:
Santi, I see what you mean, and how it works, with the different TV channels, but we in the US have networks, whether it’s regular TV or cable or satellite. They are national and link the different cities and towns all over the US. In each town/city is an affiliate station, which has the national network in the shows but with local coverage (news/advertisements). Cable networks like MTV/VH1/TBS/TNN/USA/etc have a similar setup. Would this be similar and would Eurovision or the like work here??
GTiG said on March 16, 2003 22:59:
Okey... this years entry from Sweden are called “Give me your love” and are preformed by a duo called “Fame”.
It’s kind of cool, because their song are really great I think, and as late as in november or december, they were both part of a daily TV-show called “Fame Factory”. I think it’s based on the american “Star Search”... So they did a very good job going from that, to get to go to Riga and compete in the Eurovision song contest.
As for the swedish way to select who’s gonna represent sweden, we have 8 different songs that compete every saturday for 4 weeks. That makes 32 songs in total. And then the 2 best songs from each contest gets to compete in the finals in Stockholm. The one that wins there, are the final song that will represent Sweden in the Eurovision... So we have about one month of hysteria here. *smile* But it’s good, ’cos the result are much better than with the old “one time” contest.
Santi said on March 16, 2003 23:17:
I didn’t mean national in that way. What I consider national TV Channels, that are the ones on Eurovision, are the national public television channels... that I think you don’t have in the USA.

After the 1998 edition the Eurovision lost a bit of shine ... i don’t know allowing people to sing in english has only made songs sound terrible in most cases...
In 1999 Estonia was the best although Sweden deserved also to win
In 2000 none is particular but the danish were the right winners
In 2001 the Frech one ... absolutely... Natasha St Pier is now one of my fav frech singers (she’s canadian in fact) i love her should have wom
In 2002 the French ... Rick Allison wrote one of his best songs ever (althoug he and Lara Fabian work wonderfully together) ... it should have won ... errr i was angry thay year... Latvia sucked big time that wasn’t music only a not very funny comedy...
I hope that in 2003 the right one wins.. a song with the right feeling and touch and not some plastic gum one ... i love the portuguese one great melody and the singer is amazing but i know it wont get any further than something bellow 10th position ... anyway let the best win.. but really the true best one whoever it is

The BIG mistake the UK make every year is that they do a great song and even sometimes have great artists but:
A) They release the song far to early and people are sick of it by the time Eurovision takes place
B) The women who sing for us always dress like tarts (not a word I am keen on using but if you get what I mean) short skirts, I mean what she was wearing this evening was just OTT in every way...
What do you guys think of the new system for Eurovision next year.... 2 shows....

Cool....so this means we’re not in it next year???? woo hoo!!!! You do all realize that political voting takes place rather than how good the actual songs are ;)

Actually, I went to that Eurovision site, to check it out. Dang, that girl from Iceland, she is HOTTTT!!! Ouch, I just burnt my finger on the computer screen!! ;-)
Anyhoo, yes I saw Turkey won, so I clicked on the Turkey section, who the performer was, and I saw Sertab was the perfomer, and I’m like, WOOHOO!! Why?? Cuz I LOVE Sertab!! I discovered her recently, acquiring a CD of hers from Sony Music International, as a friend of mine works in that department. That’s how I discovered Jennie Lofgren as well. Anyhoo, the Sertab CD I have is a self-titled compilation, just called “Sertab”, and it was released through Sony Music Belgium!!! She’s REALLY good!!! I was impressed with her singing, and I don’t understand Turkish. I am happy she did a song in English, as woohoo, we might have a full Sertab album in English??!!?? Just awesome!!
Sorry many of you don’t like Sertab, but now I feel my liking of her music is now vindicated, woohoo!!

@ Vixzter.... sorry to dissapoint you.... but the UK are still gonna be taking part in it next year.... they always get to take part as WE give a large sum of money every year to which ever country wins to help them with the cost of staging the EUROVISION... so we still get to take part even though we get 0 points!!
Jud (moderator) said on May 25, 2003 10:05:
yeah there are some countries that will always be there, even they dont get points at all... Germany, Spain and Uk (and France??)...
LOL Vix: no political anything here, the song wasn’t good neither the performance hahha :P
spyboo said on May 25, 2003 10:35:
mm, vix: if it’s only political belgium wouldn’t get much points (what would have been normal for us)
LOL

I liked the turkish song.
The eurovision song contest was created that the countries ´d show their musical culture. ( It´s not just my opinion , I read it .)
The most countries missed the point ´cos their songs doesn´t sound at all like their music.
But If you listen to the turkish song you can hear that´s they ´re from Turkey.
That´s why they were so good.

Your right the Queen is not amused... she went into hiding!!
Vixzter said on May 25, 2003 17:51:
@ally77: twas very good....if not a little weird in places, the special effects were good but there seemed to be alot of padding to make it a bit longer. ;)
BTW....I can’t belive we got no points....well actualy....I can.....coz no one seems to take it all seriously.....not even Terry Wogan!....maybe we’d win more often if the ppls putting money into it actualy got a decent song ;)
ally77 said on May 25, 2003 18:12:
Yeah it is time we dumped Terry for someone with a bit of talent..... and did you see who gave our votes in Lorraine Kelly.... it was nice to see a female as for the past 40 years we had this really old guy from BBC!! - I don’t think anyone knew who he was... maybe he died in the last 12 month... I mean he was old!!
ally77 said on March 20, 2004 20:26:
Well it’s approaching again! Have your countries chosen there entries yet or not?
The UK will this year been representive by James Fox... the song ain’t bad... better than last years entry!
wendy said on March 20, 2004 20:32:
Xandee-1Life,great song :) well, but,i think she better can wear something else :p
Mari said on March 21, 2004 00:16:
Yep, Finland is representive by Jari Sillanpää and song is Takes 2 to tango. It’s better than Finland’s songs usually, but no chance to win. Btw, Sweden is representive by Lena Philpson. Song is ok, but not a masterpiece.
lvninabx said on March 23, 2004 17:47:
I hate the song James Fox is singing, it’s just not got the trashy effect that euorvision needs ;-))

A great link to see some of the songs...

The UK’s entry is good. My favourite is Albania! There are loads of us having a Eurovision party on Saturday :-) Does anyone understand what’s happening with the semi-final i.e. who is in it? Best wishes, Rich
PS Terry W is the best :-P
Mari said on May 11, 2004 09:54:
Countries, which hasn’t been succesfull on Eurovision song contests are semifinals. Best songs from semifinals goes to final. So no Finland on final :P
ally77 said on May 11, 2004 10:15:
Thanx for clearning that up Mari, I did wonder... I heard these where taking place on the 12th May in Turkey?

XANDEE the Belgian candidate is a huge Roxette fan. So if her song can’t convince her, this may be a good reason to vote for her.
Jud (moderator) said on May 12, 2004 16:29:
I will vote to Andorra because the girl sings in CATALAN! :)
wendy said on May 12, 2004 18:09:
yeah,well,but,then,as a flemish singer,you won’t get any change,....
ally77 said on May 13, 2004 20:13:
I heard the singer from Belgium earlier through the official site.. I was impressed... I think after listening to a lot of songs this time around it may turn out to be one of the best contests the Eurovision has seen in a long time.... certainly some good performers... :)
ally77 said on May 13, 2004 20:41:
I have just been taking in part in a web chat with the UK entry.. was good, poor guy though he could not keep up... and so many prats where also in the chat room, spoiliing it....
Santi said on May 14, 2004 09:29:
@Wendy: Flemish/Dutch 16 million speakers worldwide and official language in 3 countries (2 of them as influencial as The Netherlands and Belgium) / Català 6 million speakers and 1 “very hard to find in a map” tiny little country that has it as official (and thousands of Spanish politicians hating Catalan... even if they “speak it in private”... ehem...)
Do you really think a song in Dutch would have less chances than a song in Catalan? :D ... the point is that shifting all to English made this show lose all it’s grace...
I still find horrible what they do in Sweden... it’s just like the “Baladas en Español” on a big scale everytime Eurovision approaches :’(
EDIT: Just read Andorra won’t be in the finals :(
Santi said on May 14, 2004 09:37:
By the way and for all the Eurovision geeks!
Did you know one of the 2 Spanish songs that have won the contest (And the only one that took more votes than the others) was originally written in Catalan by Joan Manel Serrat, but politic pressures from above (of Franco and all those “politicians” who actually were fathers and uncles to all the government that Aznar “in private catalan speaker” held the last 8 years...) forced the song to be translated into Spanish and performed by Massiel instead of Joan Manel who declined to sing his song “adapted”?
The funny thing is that the lyrics of Massiel’s song where worth a track in Baladas en Español... so much no sense :D (just read the title: “la la la”)

Mods, would you like to close this topic... seeing as we have the EUROVISION 04 one open now... ;)

It’s that time of year again! lol
Last night the show on the UK choose the entry for the UK and I have to admit the one I thought should have got through did....
The entry from us this year will be
Daz Sampson with “Teenage Life”
It’s chessy, but I like the lyrics and I actually think it stands a chance!

I like “Ding-a-dong” by Dutch group Teach Inn from the 70s. I was a kid but that song will always have a place in my heart :) :) It´s funny and perky song.
