OMG! Annie Lennox in a rox video! How cool!
Markuz said on February 8, 2003 01:42:
OMG! I think it’s really really cool that Annie Lennox is featured in the ON video! She is sitting next to Per in the red car!
That really shows that both Per and Marie really admire Annie!!! On the other hand, I wonder why they forgot to include Marie in the video...
Just compare this 2 pics:

*heavy sarcasm used in this post*
Shit. What a LAME video. I can draw better than that using Flash MX. Once again, Akerlund and his not-so-clever ideas. Why don’t they just work with some other director??? Oh, and that rocket is going to be a killer for their US comeback...

And I totally agree with you... STUPID, STUPID video !!! :(

I’ve already noticed the similarity in another thread...
But yea, Marie definitely looks like Annie Lennox in that video.

ye i thought that as i have that album. annie did look simaliar to marie now though. lol
gyllene_tjej said on February 8, 2003 15:51:
very true...even if i couldn’t force myself to watch the video more than 4 times I must say it was one of the first things i noticed.
I can’t change my mind about the video, it is still biiiig disappointment :((((((((
animalkingdom said on February 8, 2003 15:59:
I think Lennox’s both eyes & mouth are bigger than that of the cartoon-Marie’s. Well, that’s my opinion...And doesn’t Annie have a brown and non-spiky hair nowadays whereas Marie has been somewhat truthful to her style for over a decade now?! Anyways, I still L-O-V-E the video (and it sure beats everything The Eurythmics ever put out)!
Markuz said on February 8, 2003 17:16:

I’m sorry, I hear laughter in my head.
You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
SkyDrum said on February 8, 2003 18:03:
It’s definately true that the “supposed Marie” looks like Annie Lennox in ON video. It seems to be a Batman comic or something like that, isn’t it?
Well, but besides all this, think that Marie has no hair at the moment because of the chemotherapy, that’s why they’ve chosen this way to make the video. But, guys! This is Roxette’s first comic video!!!
arnie said on February 8, 2003 19:56:
I don’t like how Marie was done. I do agree, she looks more like Anni Lennox than herself. The cartoons could have been better, but I think that the new video is extremely cool
animalkingdom said on February 8, 2003 20:02:
@ SkyDrum
Yes, it actually is something like a Batman comic...That’s exactly what I thought of it! Marie looks like the girl who was always helping Joker...Harvey or something like that..Otherwise I do NOT agree with you, sorry!
@ Markuz
Whoops...Can’t tolerate any criticism towards your fav band then? Poor guy!
And believe me, I DO know what I am talking about...And actually I was talking about their
animalkingdom said on February 8, 2003 20:12:
...was talking about their videos...which..eh.. suck.
Anyway, their music is okay, quite nice actually. But I think I prefer Annie on her own better than with Dave Stewart. “No More I Love You’s” was/is one of my all time favourite songs...
PS. I have “Peace” - never listened to it entirely...Just some of the beginning and the final two. How would I describe it? Tråkig...How’s that in English?
camillarox said on February 8, 2003 21:17:
@AK: “Whoops...Can’t tolerate any criticism towards your fav band then? Poor guy!”

tråkig = boring

...and the fact is that eurythmics are over and Roxette arent ...oh and eurythmics videos were bad indeed...have u ever seen “sexcrime or there must be an angel” great laughs...and what do we remember from them? sweet dreams and here comes the rain again , thats all...
Jud (moderator) said on February 9, 2003 13:59:
@Vax: I think I only remember “Sweet dreams”.. i never liked them so much.
Anyway, animalkingdom, you should get used to people not liking everything Roxette do :) We are people, with our tastes, not clones from a “perfect I like everything Rox do” fan :P
vaxjoe said on February 9, 2003 14:02:
judith i agree with u BUT it should be the other way round too...i mean lets not try to present eurythmics as “such a better band” than Roxette...personally i prefer annie lenox’s solo stuff...eurythmics was an ok band but certainly not the best band ever and of course NOT better than rox ;o)
Jud (moderator) said on February 9, 2003 14:15:
the other way round? I think I am not getting what you mean.
I am not trying to say Eurythmics is / was better than Rox, as i said, I never liked them :O Neither do I like Annie’s stuff, except from some songs - so I think Marie’s material is far better.
vaxjoe said on February 9, 2003 14:25:
judith: “the other way round” wasnt meant for u but to some ppl that try to present eurythmics as saints :p
personally i like some songs from a.lennox’s “diva” and the one she wrote for dracula “a lovesong for a vampire” ...of course marie is better no argument there! but marie is marie u have to adore her :o)

@ Judith
Ah, back to the eternal question again...
So I’ve got to get used to these people hanging around here for their very questionable reasons then.
By the way, is there really a fan who likes every thing Roxette has made? Count me out, anyway.
Jud (moderator) said on February 9, 2003 15:45:
so that, since there is no rox fan that likes everything, it is IMHO normal to find these fans voicing their opinions here (why shouldn’t we? ;)) :P
Markuz said on February 9, 2003 18:26:
@Vaxojoe: eurythmics aren’t over. Ok, so they took a 10 year break but they returned in 1999 with their “Peace” album and world tour (BTW, all proceeds went to Greenpeace & Amnesty International)
They’re currently writing material for their new album, to be released after Annie’s 3rd solo album out in March.
And IMHO, eurythmics are wayyyyy better than roxette. Have u read their lyrics? Most of their songs talk about political and social issues. They have strong messages.
“I saved the world today”, “Sisters are doing it for themselves”, “Missionary man” and “I need a man” are good examples of that. Even their super hit “Sweet dreams” talks about the ones who have the power to rule the world and the weak ones who suffer their opression (“everybody is looking for something: some of them want to use you, some of them want to get used by you, some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused).
Still, my favorite is the philosophical “Anything but strong” that deals with concepts such as life, death, misery, hope, etc
About their videos... the one for “The king and queen of America” is a slap in the face to the US and their lifestyle. “Misionary man” is a masterpiece... and you know what??? Roxette tried to copy some scenes from that video in FLAF.
All these things are what make eurythmics probably one of the only rock/pop bands that are always acclaimed by the critics.
In roxette’s case, it’s all about ice creams and baloons. I’m kinda tired of the nonsense lyrics. Just plain stupidity... oh, but sure, they’re fun to listen to (or at least they were until they released HAND) What I mean is: roxette was a lot of fun when I was 12. Now I need music with some REAL content...
But this is just my humble opinion...
vaxjoe said on February 9, 2003 18:32:
markuz relax, it seems that ppl disagree that eurythmics are better than Roxette...and u arent the almighty god therefore they arent better just cause u say so ok?
“a 10 years break” lol good one :p
and that argument about political-social lyrics vs fun lyrics or however u call it....since when good music is the one that has political content? good art is “souls entertainment” so every one has a different theory on what art is...if u look back in history u may find that forms of art were created (and especially music) to entertain the mankind and help us escape from our problems....on the way though some artists decided to “use” art to talk bout social-political problems or protest against whatever or express believes...that is good and i respect it BUT it wasnt arts or musics initial goal so lets not get on the other side claiming that only this kind of music is the best and reject the rest of it (the fun music) ok? thnx
roxtexanet said on February 9, 2003 18:51:
@Markuz: You can’t dismiss Roxette simply because they don’t write serious lyrics (as much as you might want to). Roxette serves a niche, just as your Eurythmics do... if I want fun, pick-me up music that makes me happy to be alive, I’ll listen to Roxette. If I want to be preached at, I’ll listen to the Indigo Girls, who package the preaching much better than the Eurythmics IMHO. God forbid Per starts lecturing at me when I put on a Roxette CD to escape the shittiness of the world around me... that’s when *I’ll* stop listening to them. It’s pretty obvious that Roxette strikes a chord in listeners all over the world the way the Eurythmics never could... and it goes WAY beyond lyrical content.
animalkingdom said on February 9, 2003 19:01:
@ Markuz
Good lord! So Roxette is inferior cos they don’t like to lecture us about politics...
“And you know what Roxette tried to copy MM in FLAF”
Leave your breaking news to eurythmics dot whatever...That’s just bs!
If it’s like you say it is - liking Roxette when you were twelve - what the F*** are you still doing here?! Hello!
...Or how old are you now?
Markuz said on February 9, 2003 19:11:

Markuz said on February 9, 2003 21:37:
“if u look back in history u may find that forms of art were created (and especially music) to entertain the mankind and help us escape from our problems”
Nope, you’re WRONG. It’s the other way round. Art was a form of facing those problems and saying: “hey! we’re f*cked up!”
Art was freedom of speech. Even in the worst dictatorships/governments art had a lead role in spreading certain political ideas and beliefs.
Art has always made PEOPLE THINK, DEBATE, TALK. Even humorous plays and parodies had strong messages: you can say the worst and most hurtfull thins through humor (e.g. greek parodies)
It is very likely, however, that now art is used to escape from our problems. Because if you escape, you don’t try to solve them. If you don’t try to solve them, you don’t THINK. And isn’t that what governments and corporations want? HAPPY STUPID PEOPLE, HAPPY STUPID CUSTOMERS?
LittleSpooky said on February 10, 2003 03:15:
It seems that this has boiled down into a “Who’s better? Roxette or The Eurythmics?” debate. Nothing wrong with that, however, it’s also degenerated into a sandbox fight. On one side, you have Markuz and those who think the Eurythmics are better. On the other, you’ve got animalkingdom, and the folks who think Roxette’s better. Neither side wants to share the sandbox with the other “children”, or thier toys.
Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion on things, that’s just common courtesy. For example, I like this video. It reminds me of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. While I know those were marching hammers, and these are LED displays, the symbolism is there. I like Pink Floyd. I also go through moods where I like one band better than the other. When I’m foul, I listen to PF, AC/DC, and other Metal bands. It just compliments my mood. But more often than not, I prefer Roxette.
Markuz: You made the comment about the Eurythmics writing more “political” lyrics than Roxette. So does U2. However, a lot of people prefer to “lose” themselves in music that doesn’t contain politics in em. All we have to do anymore is turn on the television, and we get more than our fill of politics. That’s not to say it’s wrong.
Roxette’s lyrics are not necessarily “bubble gum and ice cream”. I read an interview they’d done early on in their careers that made mention that the music they wrote was about love in one form or another(hot love, sad love, etc). And, if you stop and put it in those terms, it fits. A good example: “It Must Have Been Love”. Ignore the fact that it was in “Pretty Woman”. Stop and think that about that one time in your life when you thought you were in love, you thought that this is the one, and then you’ve broken up since then.
“It must have been love, but it’s over now. It must have been good, but I lost it some how.” Personally, I live the video. I think it’s cool. Like it or lump it. I don’t care. Just quit throwing sand around and call it good people. There’s too much conflict in the world already.

Santi said on February 10, 2003 16:10:
Many people likes Roxette and doesn’t really understand them. Like many people in here likes Marie or Gyllene Tider without really understand Swedish... so that must make them all stupid in the opinion of some people here... Well, I’m against that view... music in itself can convey pretty well, even words that you don’t understand can convey feelings. And I think Roxette songs set you in the mood pretty well by themselves.
Santi said on February 10, 2003 16:11:
Just remember that “the highest music” (classical music) needs no words at all.
ChrisWilliams said on February 12, 2004 19:56:
I very much enjoy listening to Eurythmics albums, but I find a lot of the songs weak, while all of Roxette’s albums have very few weak recordings. Speaking as a songwriter (not a good one, but I have a go at it), I’d say it’s easy to get ’political’ in songs; To have big ideas and flood them out in your music. But when you’re trying to communicate with the average human, it’s bloody difficult to come up with a few words that explain a situation better than some of Roxette’s lyrics. Lines like “it must have been love, but it’s over now” are so simple. It’s harder to write simple, heartfelt lyrics that everyone can understand, than complicated notions as contained in Sweet Dreams, for example.
Per’s lyrics have always had the ability to reach out to people. There’s no crap drifting through the songs; You’re told how Marie’s spending her time. You know why Per is missing those opportunities.
Complicated lyrics about complicated topics just can’t reach out to the average record buyer. But great melodies can. Roxette deliver both while, I feel, Eurythmics tend to produce only the latter.

Michael Stipe (REM - lead singer) about Eurythmics:
“In the early 80s, my job as a member of REM was to kind of ignore and despise that music, then of course I went back and listened to some of The Eurhythmics song from then and went ‘wow!’ This was really great! I had never really paid that close attention to the lyrics and they’re unbelievable, unbelievable! Really, really like, well done, and I’m not that easy on people, I wouldn’t say it unless I meant it.”
