Here in Spain there are very good singers and music groups, like Amaral, Bunbury, M-clan, El canto del loco, Alex Ubago, Ismael Serrano... all of them sing in Spanish and make really good music.

Here in New Zealand we have some old and new artists I think Roxette fans may enjoy. Such as:
Dave Dobbyn (been around since the 70s)
Bic Runga (her first album was about 5 years ago. She also does a duet with Dan Wilson on the song “Good Morning Baby”)
Stellar* (rock band with Bic Runga’s sister, Bo, as the singer)
Zed (a rock band from my home city, Christchurch, who appear on the American Pie 2 soundtrack with the song “Renegade Fighter”)
The Datsuns (just recently made it big in the UK)
Annie Crummer (been around since the 80s. She has a knockout voice)
Split Enz (from the 70s and 80s, with brothers Neil and Tim Finn)
Crowded House (well, this band is more New Zealand and Australia. The only New Zealander I know of is Neil Finn)
There’s more, but I can’t think at the moment. Hehe. :)

There has been some really good music come out of Canada in recent years. Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace, Nickelback and Sum41 which I’m sure most of you know about. There are other groups like Treble Charger, Wave, David Usher, Simple Plan, and Not by Choice that no one outside of Canada really knows about. It’s a shame, but that’s why we create webpages right?

I live in Austria ... here is almost NO musicbusiness.
Schoolbands stay schoolbands, and when the pupils grow up, they split up the band, because of never getting the chance to get a contract!
Poor Music :(

Ok, from Spain I gotta say I don’t listen much music, but the best (all time, not like in the other post about Spain that were from now) are:
Band (some great songs)
- SAU (Boig per tu, Laia, Màgic Whisky, No he nascut per militar, Al final del carrer...)
- RADIO FUTURA (Veneno en la piel, Enamorado de la moda juvenil, Escuela de calor...)
- LOQUILLO Y LOS TROGLODITAS (Feo fuerte y formal, el ritmo del garage... too many :D)
- MECANO (No es serio este cementerio, Aire, Héroes de la Antártida, Ay qué pesado, Hijo de la Luna, Cruz de Navajas, No hay marcha en Nueva York...)
- LA UNIÓN (Maracaibo, Más y más... )
- LA GRANJA (***Fuimos chicos rebeldes*** -> ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL SONG!!!)
- LOS PLANETAS (Nuevas sensaciones, Cumpleaños total...)
- JARABE DE PALO (La flaca, Depende...)
- SEGURIDAD SOCIAL (Chiquilla, Quiero tener tu presencia...)
- AUSTRALIAN BLONDE (Chup chup, Drew & Cherry)
- ALASKA (Mi novio es un zombie, Bailando, Nadie puede cambiarme...)
Just to name a few... Spain has wonderful music, mainly from the 80’s :) Just try to download from KazaA some of these songs to realize ;)
Santi said on November 22, 2002 23:57:
I only use Napster/KazaA/Audiogalaxy to download music from countries I can’t get their CDs. So I looked once in Napster for something Greek and found that wonderful “Meres Argias” :D :)

Well, but there are a lot of country who no one has said nothing. I don’t know too much, but I like many bands from around the world (I don’t know with which country should I start :D):
- Kasia Kowalska (POL). Her album 5 is wonderful. Try “Bede jak”, “Z kim chcialbys byc?” or “Moje Katmandu”.
- Bluvertigo (ITA). Everything they do is great :D No love songs allowed (mostly :P), try “Iodio”, “Altre forme di vita”, “L’assenzio”, “Comequando”, “Zero”... try anything, is amazing ;)
- Subsonica (ITA). Pretty interesting too, they do things with Bluvertigo (“Disco Labirinto”), and with other artists like Antonella Ruggiero (“Per un’ora d’amore”). My favourite song from them is “colpo di pistola”.
- Luna Pop (ITA). A whole lot more commercial than the previous ones :D But “Se ci sarai”, “50 Special”, “Metrò” and “Zapping” are pretty good pop songs ;)
- Elisa (ITA). It’s a pitty she’s only now beginning to be known. Her newest song “The comes the sun” is a version in English of her only song in Italian (as far as I know) “Luce”, with which she won San Remo festival. But try “Labirynth” or “Gift” to discover she’s not a one hit wonder, but a great musician :)
- Diafana Krina (GRE). Don’t know much but their song “Meres Argias” is absolutely wonderful.
- Irina Florin (BUL). She sings techno and such things, but the songs “Zviat Lilav” and “Moga” are in a very interesting Enya like style :P Also great. Other artists I like from Bulgaria are Kiora or Atlas (“Kukla”), for example.
- Vama Veche (ROM). Pretty strange music/theater thing :D A bit like Queen taken to the extreme. Well, not so rock, they hardly play guitars but the piano is wonderful. From the commercial “Vara asta am sa ma indragostesc” to the ironical (I guess, dunno Romanian :)) “Romania is my country”, passing thru masterpieces “Hate” (in english :DD), “Nu am chef azi” or my favourite “Copilul si durerea”.
- Eva Braun (YUG). Despite the name is a pop band, for me the best or one of the best in Europe. They really understand what pop is about. If you don’t believe it try downloading “Ja to radim samo kad sam sam”, “Bubble gum”, “Sasvim obican dan”, “Lavirint”, “Aljaska”, “Katatonija”, “Konacno sasvim sama”... this songs are all wonderful pop.
- Dino Merlin (CRO/BOS). A well-known singer from Sarajevo. A bit folky, but it’s interesting the oriental touch in his songs. “Godinama” is a favourite of everyone who knws him, were also the Croatian singer Ivana Banfić sings.
- Van Gogh (YUG). Rock, I would say hard rock, sung in serbian. Try “Da li zna” or the first song from the same album that I don’t remember the name but it’s so great :D
- Delfins (POR). Well, not my favourite but they sound good :D. From Portugal I like a singer who is not even known in her country, called Né Ladeiras. If you have the chance to get “Estrela do mar” don’t ever lose it ;)
- Kim Larsen (DEN). Ok, Danish people could say I’m stupid, but I like it :D Especially the song Jutlandia. His band Gasolin was pretty well-known too :P
- The September When (NOR). Pop, pop pop!!!! :D
- Morten Abel (NOR). Ok, this was the singer of the previous band :) But listen “Music is communicating”, “Be my lover”, “Hard to stay awake”, “Don’t forget me”, “Doberman”, “Tulipz”, “You are beautiful”, “Lydia”... you won’t get bored, especially being a Roxette fan ;)
- Nylon Beat (FIN). Ok, Visa and the others don’t get in a panic :DDD But don’t tell me “Viimeinen” isn’t great :P
- Ismo Alanko (FIN). Very strange, but the song “Peltirumpu” rocks... for sure ;)
Wow, this got too long and I still have bands to say :D Well, maybe other day ;) I hope someone downloads some of this songs and tells what s/he thinks :)

No Shane!! I LOVE Jann Arden!! She’s great!! AND she’s INVADING Manhattan, doing 10 nights of shows, upstairs at Studio 54, something like that, in May. I’ll be going to at least one.
Other Canadian artists I LOVE are Amanda Marshall, Lisa Dalbello, Alanis Morissette, Alan Frew (Glass Tiger), Haywire, Tara MacLean, Aselin Debison (she’s pretty cool), Mylene Farmer (she’s from Montreal originally). Canadian artists who are not my thing are: Sum 41 + Simple Plan + Celine Dion + Avril Lavigne (she’s not authentic). Shania I really enjoy too, she’s like ABBA meets Def Leppard!!
I’m from the States, as you know, and I’ll name some artists/bands from here that are below the radar: Roger Clyne + The Peacemakers, Richard X Heyman, Adam Schmitt, Swirl 360, Jellyfish, The Posies, Tsar, Butch Walker, Lava Baby, Deni Bonet, The Everyothers, Cheap Trick. Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, Andrew Dorff, The Drive-By Truckers, John Eddie, Pete Yorn. Oh, there are tons of others too....

I just came across this thread here and am surprised, none of the Germans have mentioned any Band or singers here yet!
Well, there is one amazing good Band, the ’No Angels’, even though they are a TV Casting Band, the are releasing the third album now and are still HUGE! The coolest is, they also write their own stuff and are very talented, as one of their own written songs became one of their biggest hits ever. I think, with just a lil promo world wide, they would be as huge as the Spice Girls, with the only difference that No Angels can sing, I saw a life unplugged concert from the No Angels too weeks ago and I was amazed how great they sound live! I think they simply rock .
The Scorpians are a great German Band too... I also love Bell Book and Candle, was surprised they didn’t become Number 1 World Wide....

Ha, and no one mentioned Ireland yet! ;-) I have been living here for more than 5 years now, so I am going to present just some of the coolest Irish Bands here! ;-)
U2 - What more can I say??
Cranberries - One of my Personal favs!!
The Corrs - Perfect Irish Pop!
Westlife - Record Breaking Boy Group, a Boygroup that actually ROCKS! Even I just love ’em!
Sinead O’Connor - Not my Cup of Tea, but very well known...
Enya - She is GREAT! GREAT!! GREAT!!!
Boyzone - even though I never liked them at all...
I most likely forgot some of the other great Irish Bands, there are just so many of them! Considering Ireland is such a saml tiny weeny country it is amazing how many huge Bands we have got. Just keep in mind that there are 3.6 Million people living in Ireland, so this is quite an achievment... ;-)

Canada! Forget that we’re responsible for Celine, Shania, Nickelback, and Avril - we’re sorry (-:
And to show you that we’re really sorry, we’re also giving you ANET, Our Lady Peace, the Matthew Good Band (better than Matt Good solo, I think), and Sum41... these bands are very typical of what gets airplay here (besides all the usual crap). Holly McNarland is really good too... alt-rock but a little different from most.
Others that are popular but no faves of mine:
Barenaked Ladies
Swollen Members
Sarah Harmer
Tragically Hip - probably the biggest Canadian band in Canada
But really, the best we have to offer: *ANET* http://www.mp3.com/anet - for fans of power pop with an edge... great, great artist, writes all her own material and plays many of the instruments heard in her songs, too.
@Shane and others: Jann Arden is alright! Really hate that “Never Mind” song, though... but she’s had some great tracks, like “Could I Be Your Girl” and “I Would Die For You.”

For not so Roxette style - Zdravko Colic, Crvena Jabuka (Croatian), Tanja Banjanin, Alisa.... uh there are so many groups. But most of the good music is old music. Not so good music nowadays. You probably remember Zeljko Joksimovic @ Eurovision... :/
And may I suggest my favorite HUNGARIAN band - EDDA, for all Roxette fans! :)

Music from my country is really bad, at least our “rock” or “pop”, I don’t think people specially from Europe, find it interesting or good, I don’t like rock or pop from Argentina, the only band I listen to is a folk one called “Los Nocheros”, they have beautiful songs and wonderful voices.
KixGuy said on November 19, 2002 22:45:
Well, I’m very curious when it comes to music. What bands/artists do you like or think we, TDR readers, would like from your countries?
Well, I’ll mention 5 artists from Brazil I like very much:
1. Pato Fu (Pop-rock band where a girl sings most of the songs. Time magazine listed them as one of the 10 best bands in the world outside U.S. Great song: “Eu”).
2. Skank (Pop band with very melodic tunes. Great song: “Três Lados”)
3. Kid Abelha (Great pop band from the 80’s. A gorgeous blonde on the lead vocals of the Brazilian version of Roxette - what people say. It’s just cos it’s a blonde singing pop songs. They must have same musical influences. Great song: “Te Amo Pra Sempre”).
4. Acústicos & Valvulados - (My favorite Brazilian band at this moment. They started with rockabilly, but now it’s rock & roll. They’re awesome! Great song: “O Nome Dessa Rua”).
5. Los Hermanos - (Great, great band from Rio de Janeiro. Influenced by Weezer and samba. Great song: All of them. But if you want to search for something from them you can find easily on the net their biggest hit “Anna Julia”, wich is not very Weezer-influenced. It’s kinda 60’s).
Warning: it’s all in Portuguese.
That’s only a very few. There is also big names like CPM 22, Capital Inicial, Titãs, Legião Urbana, Barão Vermelho, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Ira! and lots of underground names, not to mention solo artists. Those are my top 5. What’s yours? :)
If you’re interested in finding those songs and you’re having a hard time doing that, I can e-mail you some MP3s or websites where you can find or listen to them.
