Small Talk Policy Clarified: No Flames!
Lars-Erik_Olson said on October 7, 2002 20:08:
We’ve seen FAR too much political debate published in our newspaper lately... a newspaper that was NEVER intended to be a forum for such discussions.
From our perspective, discussions about politics (and to a lesser extent religion) can ONLY lead to devisiveness within the TDR community of Roxette fans... and serves NO PURPOSE.... other than to piss people off, and thereby generate posts that contain what’s come to be called “flames”... or, in other words, posts where one reader does NOT show respect for another reader.
If you want to engage in debate and discussion about these kinds of topics... we suggest you do so on an e-newspaper or e-magazine site that covers current events. There ARE such sites with discussion boards, so we can see no reason for such discussions to be published here.
It’s one thing to allow Off-Topic threads like “Savage Garden this...” or “a-ha that”.... quite another to get into these topics that seem to be INTENDED from the very beginning to create controversy and discord amongst our readers.
The editors of The Daily Roxette are interested in fostering a community of fans who hold each other in high regard. We’re intersted in what unites us... and will leave it to OTHER sites to be concerned with these other issues. They are important, but it’s not the mission of this e-newspaper to cover such matters.
We have not done enough to discourage these types of threads... not done enough to keep SmallTalk “flame-free”. It’s time to get back to basics here.
Some of you REALLY seem to enjoy this punch, counterpunch... jab, counterjab kind of “debate”. If that’s you, if that’s YOUR idea of fun... writing posts where you criticize someone else... calling them dumb or stupid or worse... then you are NOT in the right place, and you’ve misunderstood the pupose of SmallTalk.
The time we have available to moderate SmallTalk is very limited. Thus, we try to make our policies clear, and hope for cooperation. There is ZERO tolerance for messages that contain flames. Feel free to write to me if you see that someone hasn’t read and complied with this.
It’s OK to say, “I disagree with you about what the lyrics mean”... it is NOT OK to say “You must be stupid to think that’s what the song is about.” Get the idea?

To summarize then... discussion threads are to steer clear of topics dealing with politics and conflicts between nations. Religion and/or spirituality... requires people to be sensitive and respectful of feelings/beliefs of others. There are plenty of examples in PG and MF lyrics to indicate that such a discussion can indeed be Rox-related.
BUT... the writer above is correct. Our intention is that NO disussion thread should devolve into a flamewar... and no individual subscriber should post ANY message that includes content that singles out another TDR subscriber... and “flames” him or her. If you disagree with something someone else says... in a legitimate discussion thread... then make SURE that your response is focused on what they had to say... and is not directed at them PERSONALLY.
What upsets me – personally – is the knowledge that there are NOT an unlimited amount of “active” Roxette fans out there. GONE are the days when our numbers were SO massive, that individuals didn’t matter. We will no longer sit back and let a few jerks make this an unpleasant place for ANY of our readers to visit. We work too hard on our Front Page, to let this section tarnish the entire TDR project and concept.
In my “tenure” as a Roxette fan, I’ve seen FAR too many good people leave the online “Rox community” (TDR/RML/FCs/etc.), rather than put up with all this childishness. It’s time to cherish each other... and keep our numbers as strong as possible.... not to be calling each other names.

@LEO: I agree with you but i think i should let u know that there are ppl that tend to flame others no matter what the topic is...
cheers
EDITOR’S NOTE: See the paragraph above that starts with “BUT..” It doesn’t matter WHAT the topic is... posts that contain “flames” will be deleted... so PLEASE... don’t even bother to write them in the first place. We STILL want to see lively debates... but everyone must learn to NOT write in a disrespectful manner. It’s a very simple request.

Great move Lars!
I would also introduce the rules like in FIDO (hope some people know about it here). If a single person violates the set rules (like off-topic, flame, overquoting, etc..) it gets so called “+” record.
Three “+” make “*” (so called “star”). And then you set the rule that if a man get 3 “*” it gets off from the forum (at least writing from his nickname)
for a certain period of time, or is turning into “read-only” mode.
Dunno though if it can be settled up here :(
P.S. I’m also too tired of useless info and topics floating here around

@ antimario
it would be a shame if that rule had to be implemented ie. certain ppl on TDR we’re to childish to know when enough is enough (flame wise)
edit - but then again, some ppl have already shown how childish they can be...

Hey!
People, discuss and debate. However, avoid insulting others. It’s not a healthy thing to do. We just end up dividing us into specific categories, which is not what this forum is all about. This forum is supposed to unite all of us who are Rox fans! Cool, guys? :-)!
@Lars: Hey, how are you? Well, although i highly doubt i have “flamed” or mistreated anyone in here, i still want to apologize for participating and, therefore, keeping off-topic threads going. My bad.

Take care, friends.

surely we can all flame EMI UK??
No seriously, I agree with LEO. We should stop biting at eachother, and try and respect what we all have to say.

You should close all threads with flamewars not only dealing with politics or religion...
