bad and good reviews...

just surfed the web searching for past and present reviews realated to rox stuff.
It’s sad to see almost all aren’t good at all..
So there’s a question on my mind: why is roxette so underrated, i mean you may or may not like their music but i think they’ve been and they are much over the average level of the present music.
Another question: if nobody likes them (or shouldn’t like them according to most of the reviewers) how the hell were they able to sold more than 40 million albums? I bet the many considered cool musicians would give their right hand to be able to do the same.
For me this is the proof (if needed) that critics really sucks and that their reviews are in some way guided..(who guides?).
I’m really proud of beeing fan of a group so underrated....that’s the proof they’re really good

actually they’ve sold about 60 mio. records....*gg*

I think Roxette is timeless, they’ve never had their chance to be the “flavour of the week” and they’ve never been considered trendy... so at any one time, the critics will say that their music is “irrelevant” or cheesy or whatever. But good melodies last over the ages, it’s the gimmicks that fade from memory, and you don’t sell a million records twenty years after you started if you’re nothing more than a gimmick. Too bad the critics can’t see this!

@ pikappa: ciao bello ;)

u need to know about critics and reviews that its very usual that the critics have an opposite opinion about a cd or a movie than the opinion the public has...dont forget that the critics are just persons with their own views and opinions they re not something official...so their word is not like a rule or anything is it?

for example lets say im a critic and i really hate a band called THE FLIES (imaginary name)...Now if i have to write a review on their new cd no matter how good they are i;ll bury them just because i dont like their kind of music

i hope i helped u a bit ...

Vaxjoe: No, that didn’t made sense really.
I have noticed that Roxette is a band that got a hard time in the public ever since they released any records all over the world... most critics always only said bad stuff about them, even today, like 10 years later, if I say to someone that I am a Roxette Fan, people smile about that comment, why? Because they used to be this huge Teenager Band. Don’t you guys remember the time, especially in Germany when just everybody loved them to bits? I really mean everybody! Every Teenager loved their music, of course they had this strong teenager image which was hard, almost too hard to brake. I would say, 10 years ago there were lilke 4 times more Roxette Fans in Germany. They seemed to have died out. So, mos of the Fans from 10 years ago, still remember them today as being their Idols from like the early nineties... I think though, that Roxette’s image in Germany changed a lot during the years, I mean, Roxette always had this huge amount of fans in Germany anyway... Roxette were able to change their image to a much more grown up band, but also, there are still too many people that didn’t actually see the imagechange happening... do you know what I mean? I have read quite a few really bad critics about Room Service, but just the other week I came across one excellent critic. It mentioned things such as: “Those musicans are at the point of their best talents ever, they know how to do good music and they proof, even a decade later, that they always can improve, even when you would have thought they were perfect already... Reading that made me feel good...
But in the UK I think Roxette had the worst image all over the world! It never changed really in the UK...

@ th th: i wrote that for pikappa so he can understand how critics think so i think its logical...

about what u said: u need to know that the “public” changes his mind and forget very easy....most of the ppl will support a band when its at its best and topping the charts but after a few years they will forget and find other bands...and of course they will never accept that once upon a time they were listening to roxette and of course they will make fun of u that u still listen to them...and lets not forget the ppl who are the “power” and bring bands to the top or bury them are the teenagers...
so when we were teenagers we made roxette number one...but now there are other ppl and new bands...
and as u said u re talking about what happens in ur country where most ppl (if i understand correct) prefer dance music or hard rock...in my country where pop is no1 ppl still like roxette and noone will give u a funny look if u tell them u re a rox fan
:-)

as far as uk is concerned we all now there they prefer either boy-girl pop bands or that brit rock style...Roxette is right in the middle so they dont stand much chance...

but really who cares in the end? i like roxette the same before when they were no1 and i still like them now! i dont care about the sales the promotion or if other ppl make fun of me, or what the critics have to say or if noone listens to them in uk and usa....

Not many bands have really made it big (given that roxette are swedish and to be big u will either have to from come from uk or usa) and no matter what rox sell now everybody knows who they are all around the world..and im proud of that ;-)

I am proud of that too Vaxjoe.
I love roxette. And I think some artists wold sell their soul to accomplish what Roxette have accomplished in the last decades...

th th : now we re talking! :)

rox hugs to u!

i think we re lucky to have rox in our lives...just let others listens to their souless music .....

i forgot to say that Roxette are one of the few that survived from the late 80s...i mean look at mj...i never imagined that he could reach bottom...or even pet shop boys (that i love) or george michael...their latest work isnt appreciated as much as they deserve it!

so yes rox after 14-15years still kick it!

What is a band that gets good critics from reviewers?

U2? Radiohead? They’re all bands that sound more like a rock’n roll branch than pop. They don’t sell millions and millions with a “pop” image. They don’t have that teenage accent, a good commercial potential, and they don’t get to the annoying frequence of their songs being played in radios. In 1991, I couldn’t bear listening to SMT in radios. When a band reaches this point, it always makes some enemies. So, BSB are good and N’sync, too? No...the difference is found when you examine their stuff, origins...that’s what makes the difference in Roxette’s case. They’re still pop (look at Marie’s faint case - spreading all over the world), they’re easy hit makers (with a little more attention from EMI, HAND and RS would go further) and their name is easily found in people’s mouth. You can, by ear, notice when they’re being played in radio, and you remember the name. But in the case of good critics bands...well, does it always happen like in Roxette’s case?
