About the lyrics... Typical Roxette lyrics I think... I mean, for example the part in sleeping in my car.. “The night is so pretty and so young...” cheeeesy, or in Jefferson “I say a prayer for, someone I care for...” You would not have believed those lyrics either before you heard the song.... If you think about it, it is not the worst Gessle Lyrics in sinking, it is true, not the best ones either, I thought so when I listened to it anyway... but the music and the sound and how lyrics get delivered is the most important part of a song... I mean the Lyrics “I am a Barby Girl, in a barby world, life is plastic, its fantastic....” Most crappy lyrics in the World, still it became one of the biggest hits ever all over the World....

Actually, the US doesn’t get many singles anymore. An act does not have to sell any singles to get to #1 anymore in the US. Songs get to #1 now on just radio airplay. And personally, I think it really shows the downfall of the music industry in the US with radio stations controlling the “most popular” songs in the USA. It’s fake.
Back when “The Look” was #1, it had sales to show for its popularity. So comparisons are irrelevant to today’s standards.
And, “Barbie Girl” never hit #1 in the USA. It reached #7 on the Hot 100 because the single was deleted.
