View From A Hill - about suicide?

Hi everyone,
I’ve always wondered about these lyrics.
It seems they are reflecting on the pain and sadness to do with love. Does anyone know?

————————————————————
Raging waves sweep this heavy heart.
Cold is the colour of the dark.
Find a byway and climb that hill,
watch the thunder cast a spell.
What did you gain from love? - Don’t ask me!
All for the sweetest thrill...
————————————————————

“Raging waves sweep this heavy heart” is a metaphor for trouble in love. Also:

————————————————————
Love is a rainfall, hard on the head,
no escape though you’re soaking wet.
Leave me blinded by your light.
Leave me stranded alone tonight.
What did you gain from love? - Don’t ask me!
All for the cheapest thrill...
————————————————————

“Love is a rainfall, hard on the head” continues the reflection, and “no escape though you’re soaking wet” indicates the person feels trapped in the helpless and sad feelings of love.

————————————————————
I see a view from a hill - oh oh.
I see it perfectly clear and I cry for the dreams that you kill - oh oh,
view from a hill, and it’s only a motion away.
————————————————————

Does this chorus indicate the person is contemplating suicide, by looking from the top of a hill? Saying “it’s only a motion away” seems to hint at it also.

Comments?

Yes, of course.

Never been able to decipher much of the lyrics, due to all that 80’s noise going on... and I’ve never looked them up, so it’s interesting to know now...

I love hearing peoples takes on PG’s lyrics.

I’ve never really thought of that about VFAH.

I ADORE this track. The smoothiest one. I even imagine how Gessle demo could sound like. Almost sure that VFAH must have been another US #1 at those days.

Potential US #1? LOL, no way!

Other LS! tracks could have been, not this one. I think (and many other fans will agree) VFAH is one of the worst Roxette songs ever recorded. It’s pure filler. If I remember well, it’s not one of the Per own favourites either...

It’s bad, I hope no bad enough to push the fans to commit suicide... :)

For once I somehow agree with 7-twenty-7... the song is not bad...but defenitly one of the weakest Roxette-tracks. Its not bad, but defenitly the weakest. Good lyrics anyway...

I love it . So 80’s
Id love Look sharp to be re -released with Some of the songs remixed, So 80’s so retro so IN !

Maybe it was killed by the cheap arrangement. It could have been better, I think. Damn Moseley!

I don’t care about this song, nor do I care about the lyrics... but if they are really about suicide, the song should have been recorded in a VERY different way. btw Most LS songs have that crazy 80’s arrangment, but I have no problem with it, sometimes it’s kinda cool. The only exception is View From A Hill... I’ve heard it about ten times in my life and I’ve had enough

The music is horrible in this track... The song could have been much better...

I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics before. I always thought it had a pastoral meaning.

One of those songs I have not listened to in years... but also one you immediately remember when someone mentions it... I can’t say it reminds me of thinking of suicide, I find “Watercolours in the Rain” more of a song that makes me think of suicide but hey that’s just me...

I think the Song has something to do with Suicide!
Because what else could that sentence ,,I see a View from a Hill!” mean?

’Because what else could that sentence ,,I see a View from a Hill!” mean?’

That line has NOTHING to do with suicide! It just implies the protagonist is looking down from a high place, be it hill, cliff, or mountainside. If it’s put in context with ’and I cry for the dreams that you kill’, it sounds more like suicide (death due to break-up?), but ’I see a view from a hill’, on it’s own?

This might be way off, but could it be about reaching a point in your life and looking over where you have been and what you have over come or had to do to get there.

Although i don’t know how that would fit it with the rest of they lyrics.

Meh I like it, and I never thought much about the lyrics but it makes sense. Marie’s voice is sensational, but I wonder how if would’ve sounded if it were recorded in Sweden.

Hi!
It always was clear to me that what she saw from a hill was his boyfriend cheating on her with someone else.. so she cries for the dreams that he has killed.
No suicide message for me...
Alberto - Peru

After reading the lyrics again, i think that fits perfectly, GGessle.

Well, I agree - Not Roxette’s best song, but I like Marie’s voice (she still makes something of the song) and the lyrics are strong.
It’s a sad song, definately the end of a relationship, but not suicidal, I think.
I just think the chorus means that the person can see all the deceit clear now. She can finally see all the pain and sadness the other person caused her and it’s like standing on a hill, looking down on the heartache.

I think the chorus is a “eye-opener” to the person who was lost in pain.

OK, now I what the Song really means!

To me “View from a hill” is a metaphor for looking onto something (in this case a relationship) from a different point of view, to discover other aspects you didn’t notice before (“I see it perfectly clear”). I never thought about suicide when hearing this track, but honestly I never really payed much attention to these lyrics. To me it’s just an 80s-Poptune, no deep message, just something to sing along with. But I might be wrong, of course.

“Jefferson” must be about Jeffersons suicide dont ya think?

Dear Thinkers.....

First... every Roxette album has at least one song with depressive or sad lyrics and melody, if you know of course Roxette lyrics at least “GOOD”...Secend...It’s normal, on albums always should be some sad song, it’s business. People sometimes are happy sometimes sad...and music should be made like this that everyone, in every sytuation would like to listen to. Thirdly... In autumn most big hits are songs with sad melodies and lyrics, in summer - happy...etc. This is how it works...Music business.

Did you figure that out by yourself ;)? Off course there are sad songs and happy songs but we are talking about if the songs could , perhaps, be about suicide. Otherwise, I dont think that Per said to himself ” Now im going to write about suicide” , but the lyrics to these songs could be seen from this point of view. Jefferson is about a tragic guy without any luck, and then Per prays for Jeffersons soul. Suicide or not? Who knows.. Maybe he got killed by that truck...

..

And what about poor Mrs.Cooper? What did it happen to her at foggy ways in one of those November days?

I really would like to know what you wanna prove, what are you really WANT to see in all his lyrics...that Per would like to commit suicide? If you would really follow Per’s history a little you could see many things, check it, first most of lyrics are nothing else like mix of lyrics which Per was listening, watching, over his life, all bands, movies etc. This is true, of course he added also part of his own memories into. Had he ever suicide minds?...can be, many people have it from time to time, maybe some of you too? We all are just people...but please don’t try to put too much phantasy to every Per’s word in lyrics.

Some of Pers lyrics are very deep...they are not all puzzle lyrics like ” The Look”. Mazarin for instance is a perfect example. Im defenitly not saying that Per wants to commite suicide, but that doesent mean that he couldent have written a song about it. Some of the songs are little stories that he makes up in his mind, and maybe one of the caractors in his stories, like Jefferson, is suicidal. Let us analyze in peace please;). Peace! By the way, maybe ” Wish I Could Fly” is about someone who wants to be an aeroplane??? * yes im kidding*

Sometimes is really hard to be in peace when people try to put even sick meanings in Per’s lyrics (I’m not even talk about “view from a hill”, but i was reading about some crazy people who firmly believe that some of songs or lyrics are wrote only to them or about them, isn’t sick?). For sure Per is not kind of person who is fascinated by suicide or other dark sides of live. And as i said sad songs and depresive songs are not connected with his own. Many people try to see what they want to see, true is much more simple, this is the music business, maybe when Per was younger as every young writer wanted to put some real emotions to his poems, but later The Big Music Business imposed they own rules, sad but true. Not everything is a fiction that’s true!, but music (including lyrics) is not made for art, music is made for money. The Golden Rule in this business.

I would like to belive in art for art, but when you look behind a curtain life is not so colourful anymore.

isn’t the whole song about looking back on love lost not suicide? just liek anyone regardless of how the video treated the song. Both are about love lost, love betrayed, or a forlonling for love. The issue I always have with some of the track on LS were they were intentionally drawn out to make LS a ” long play” album. Artitst used to do that so the tracks could be remixed. VFAH, SOAD, cry and Chances were all too long for their own good and kept better tracks like i could never give you up and don’t believe in accidents off the original lp/cd...which in my eyes was a mistake.

so say we all
