TDR in different browsers?

I just tried out Google’s Chrome browser and noticed that the site is stretched to the full width of the screen, also in Firefox.
Any reason that it is fixed width (960pixels left-justified) in IE based browsers? Currently using Maxthon2 (IE7).
For me it looks better across the whole screen and I find it easier to read as well. Just wondering why it’s like this and which is the “proper” version?

I personally like the Fire Fox version better because I think that it runs faster than the Internet Explorer Version!
