In the middle of 1970th years the 17-years student of musical college Gun-Marie Fredriksson ??????????? for pair crones to look after a garden of one of local residents. The girl has cut off branches, weeded a grass, looked after roses and so thus wonderfully sang what to listen to it all city … After the termination of college it gathered has left for Halmstad, sang there in various groups.

The Swedish pop duo Roxette started conquering the world 20 years ago with ‘The Look’, which an American exchange student brought to the USA, and the hit became one of the most played songs on radio. And in a few days the song topped the charts! Elena Shevchenko tells the story about the popular duo in the 90s.
On August 12, 2007, Per Gessle gave his last solo concert of the ‘En Händig Мan på turné’ in Stockholm. Roxette fans, who came from every corner of the globe, did not let the singer and his band go away from the stage for a long time. And fans from Yekaterinburg presented the musicians with the Russian national flag… Evgeny Perekopskiy, an old Roxette fan, who also visited the concert in Stockholm, told the readers of ‘Teleweek’ about his impressions of the concert: “It was very funny — and at the same time it was very sad. Funny, because, as always, the audience received the unusual charge of energy. Per and his band made the whole audience bounce, shout, clap the hands together and simply sing along … And sad, because everything came to an end, even the most beautiful fairy tales”…
Their meeting was inevitable
In the mid-seventies, the 17-year-old student of a musical college Gun-Marie Fredriksson started working for some kronas to look after a garden owned by a local resident. The girl cut off branches, weeded the grass, looked after roses and wonderfully sang so that the whole city listened to her… After graduating from the college, she left to Halmstad, and sang there in various groups.
When Per was 14, he played and sang in a school ensemble. He dyed his hair red in imitation of his favourite singer - David Bowie. When he was 19, he created his rock band Gyllene Tider (‘Golden times’) in Halmstad — and the meeting of these two gifted persons became inevitable. They rehearsed in the neighborhood. Marie, at that time the solo singer of Strul, came to the Gyllene Tider rehearsals and said to Per that she liked his songs very much. But they did not make friends at once. At first she considered Per as a “boring person” who lived with his mother and his clothes were not fashionable. And he found her voice good enough before she started howling like Yoko Ono. She did not look like Elizabeth Taylor and in his opinion her piano sounded too loud… Per and Marie became colleagues in 1985. Per was contacted to write a song for a Swedish female singer, Pernilla Wahlgren. He wrote ‘Svarta Glas’ (“Black glasses”), but Pernilla did not like the song. Then Per rearranged the song, wrote the English lyrics and renamed it — and … he suggested Marie to sing it together with him. The “rejected” ‘Neverending Love’ quickly appeared in the Swedish hit list. At that time no one knew who stood after Roxette, and the name was interpreted as the word-play: Rock + Said. However, the new group belonged more to the high quality pop music. Inspired by their first success, Per and Marie released their debut album ‘Pearls of Passion’ in 1986, and after it their second album — ‘Look Sharp!’. And here the Mr. Opportunity appeared again: while studying in Sweden, an American exchange student from Minneapolis, Dean Cushman, heard “The Look”, then one of the most played songs on radio, and brought a copy of Look Sharp! home for the 1988 holiday break. Cushman “badgered” a Minneapolis radio station, KDWB, to play the song. Based on positive caller feedback, the station’s program director, Bryan Phillips, played the song. The DJs who were present at that time started asking each other: what is it? who are they? And within weeks the song became very popular not only in the US and Germany, ‘The Look’ became #1 in 26 countries!

Very few people knew that Åsa — his girlfriend, and then his wife who became tour manager of the group, came together with Per almost from the creation of Roxette. And Mikael — Marie’s husband, was a keyboard player during their tour in Australia. In 1993, Marie visited Per and Åsa’s wedding together with her husband and their daughter Josefin. Marie sang a romantic song by The Beatles, ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, in honour of a newly married couple. After the celebration, the bride couple left on a silver limousine to seclude themselves from the public, but the wedding travelling was soon cancelled: for 10 years they lived together they had seen so many exotic places!...
New songs and new kids
On May 2, 1995, Per and Marie chose Moscow as a final point of their tour initiated in support of the group’s fifth album ‘Crash! Boom! Bang!’. Then the musicians told in every interview how great they were welcomed in Moscow.
There was a six-year break between their first and second visit to Russia. The time-out was chosen for creation of new songs, for new experiments (in the autumn of 1996, Roxette released their album in Spanish ‘Baladas еn Español’ — it immediately became “platinum” in Spain and “gold” in many Spanish-speaking countries) and new children: in 1996 Marie gave birth to her second child — Oscar, and Per had his first-born — Gabriel. So, when Roxette played a live gig in Moscow in 2001, Per and Marie easily proved that they were in a great shape!
What was going on at the “Olympiyskiy” hall on November 7, 2001! The hall was filled to capacity. There was a screen over the stage and the concert was accompanied by video clips. From the very beginning Roxette took the hall in their hands and on the third song the audience already sang along the lyrics and swung lighters in the rhythm. Roxette played almost all their hits: ‘Listen to Your Heart’, ‘It Must Have Been Love’, ‘Spending My Time’, ‘Crash! Boom! Bang!’ and, at last, ‘The Look’ – in the end of the song the whole hall was filled with rain of spangles falling down on the visitors. But the audience did not let their favourite group go away. Touched at her heart, Marie said: ‘You are a fantastic audience, do you want some more?’ And of course they wanted! The concert lasted for a half an hour more.
Evgeny Perekopskiy visited both Roxette concerts in Moscow, though he lived in the 90s in his native Tomsk. He happened to visit Per Gessle’s signing sessions twice in Sweden.
— In 2007, I was lucky to talk to Per personally a few times, — says Evgeny. — He was very glad to know from me that his solo albums are popular in Russia. When he signed his new album to the girl called Alla, I told him that this is a real Russian name though ‘alla’ means ‘all’ in Swedish. Per gave a smile and said to me that he knew this name. He remembers Alla Pugacheva, in 1985 she recorded her solo album ‘Alla Pugacheva in Stockholm’ and she visited his native city - Halmstad. They sat in a small local restaurant and discussed the possibility of writing a song by Per for her new album. But something failed in the final... In December 2007, I met Per again. I came to him holding a dozen of his brand new DVDs and said: “Hej, Per, från Rysland!” and asked him to sign the cover of a DVD for my female friend Ksenia. He asked me: How do you pronounce her name in Russian? I said: Ksyushechka! — Kshusetska? — Per asked again and started laughing - he could not pronounce the name correctly — it was real hard!...
White roses for ‘our beloved Marie’
On September 11, 2002 Marie suffered a terrible accident. She fainted in her bathroom, severely hitting her head and receiving a concussion. Scans would show even worse news - Marie had a brain tumour in the back of her head. After waiting several weeks for the concussion to subside, she underwent a successful surgery to remove the tumour. It was malignant and she then endured months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. This sudden illness raised a query about the further existence of Roxette. Today, Gun-Marie Fredriksson — in May she celebrated her 50th anniversary — lives together with her husband and her kids in a beautiful private house near Stockholm and looks after her own garden. She is always skilful to draw in a fantastic way, but only friends and relatives could see her pictures.
— Evgeny continues to tell: “When the tumour had been found in her head, drawing was the only art in which she found her “ego” at that time. Marie drew a series of artworks using charcoal and Whatman paper — and, imagine, all artworks of her first personal exhibition, held in the autumn of 2005 in Stockholm, were sold out! When I knew that Marie was going to open her second personal exhibition in February of 2008 in Stockholm I decided to visit it. I also wrote some lines in the visitors’ book: “…They say you are feeling well and it is great! So on behalf of your Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian fans I would like to thank you for what you did, you have done, you do, and I hope you will do to us! Life is great with Marie F.!”I also drew a flower with my signature: ‘Från Rysland med kärlek!’.
Last time Evgeny saw Marie on Per’s concert in Stockholm.
— Not all of us could keep our tears… She received some permanent damage to her brain, losing the ability to read and count, the vision in her right eye, and some loss of movement in her right side…
But Marie is a strong person: meeting her fans, she always smiles to them with sincerity. Now she prepares her third art exhibition. And she also comes back in music! She has recently recorded a song for the epic Scandinavian film ‘Arn 2 - alla himlens änglar’. And she writes songs for her new solo album. And Marie is according to Kvällsposten going on a mini-tour this autumn around Sweden… Perhaps, when so many people wish you health, it really helps. And the female part of Roxette knows that she is loved by her fans. And on her birthdays she receives bouquets of her favourite white roses from her fans…
