Ace of Base & their fans suffering becasue of Edel

Hej peeps,

I know a lot of you in this forum are also Ace of Base fans, so here’s some very current information for you.

As most of you know, the long a waited new CD from AoB is supposedly due to be released shortly. Most reports said the first single would be out in late by early to mid February with the album a month or two following. While that still MAY be the case, a disturbing aricle in a recent edition of Expressen puts a heavy cloud of doubt on the release of the new AoB material.

During the past year, amy AoB fans have become upset at the continous delays in regard to supposed release dates for new AoB material (sound familiar). I think the common thought was that the members of the band were causing this delay themselves by being too picky. Well, quite the contrary appears to be the case. In this article, Jonas is quoted as saying that they not only have recorded enough material for a double album, but that the recording has been complete since last fall (for 3 or 4 months). Apparently, Mega’s merger with Edel (our favorite piece of shit record company) has caused this further delay because of management’s indecision at the newly merged music conglomerate.

Great! Edel America basically blew the best chance they would ever have for success (Roxette) and now their European arm is trying to bring down another great band! This completely sucks! Anyway, for those that don’t know Swedish, I have copied an English translation provided by Coeur from the AoB discussion forum... enjoy.No-one is getting to hear Ace Of Base’s New Album

GOTHENBURG. Ace OF Base have sold over 30 million albums.
But right now the Group from Gothenburg isn’t selling even one single. Despite the fact that they ahve had finished material ready for an album since last autumn(fall).
“It’s pure Wild West. We aren’t getting any information at all,” says Jonas Berggren and points toward communication with the band’s record labels.

In the autumn(fall) of 1999 the best of album “Singles of the 90s” came out. The year before that “Flowers”. But since then not a lot as happened on the album front for Ace Of Base.
Now the band memebers are growing tired of long-winded record-company deliberations. “We Have material for a double CD,” explains Jonas Berggren. But it appears that something like that won’t happen. Though we have had the tracks recorded since autumn/the fall.
The group is waiting for the record company to decide which tracks will be on the album and what it’s sound is to be.

Not getting any information
So far no information has come from the record company. Something which Jonas Berggren has grown tired of.
“We ought to have had priority in in the rendering of it. There are far too many people who think they know best in this industry,” he says irritatedly.
“The only album where we have been able to decide for ourselves was our first. It would undeniably be great to be able to get enough faith to be able to do that again.”
Jonas Berggren speaks with respect to 1993’s album success “Happy Nation”, which sold over 20 million copies. A record where Ace Of Base’s so distinctive sound was spread around the world.

A lot of time with the children.
” But I’m not crying. My children won’t be on in repeats. The last couple of years I have only worked to about 20 procent, so I have had a lot of time with them,” explains Jonas Berggren who is happy with this existence.
Ace Of Base are bound by contract to four record companies throughout the world. But according to Jonas Berggren none of these are slave contracts.
“We have agreements. But they aren’t written in a way that we are obliged to anything.”
Wouldn’t it be best then to start up their own company and be independant?
“That could be a better solution. But I don’t know whether any of us has it in them to get something like that going. We are worn out after having done recordings for three years.

FACTS/ Ace Of Base
Members: Jenny, Malin and Jonas Berggren and Ulf Ekberg.
Broke through in 1992 with the album “Happy Nation” with amongst others the singles “All That She Wants” and “The Sign”. The album sold over 20 million [copies].
The group was amongst the top 15 best selling artists for the 90s on the American music magazine Billboard’s list.
Their last studio album “Flowers” was in 1998 and has sold over 2 million copies.

It’s all about the money (dum-dum-dum).
sad.

its all about control I remember back when arista claimed aob didnt sound adult enough and we’re threatening to shelve Flowers back a few ..or was it The Bridge

either way I dont know why either roxette or aob have chosen to deal with edel. Their haphazard aim at publicity is just embarrasing. aob has suffered the same fate as roxette in terms of usa exposure..both had a strong hold on the market here, andnow noone cares at all...its a bad year for the music biz...and instead of taking a risk or two they r letting great material just die off...i just hope whatever happens to Aob that they tell mega to go to hell at the end of their contract

Yes, Rox and AoB appear to be suffering similar fates when it comes to the US market. I guess we s/b happy that at least Rox gets their material published in Europe when it’s ready. At this point, AoB doesn’t even have that.

Oh, Mega isn’t actually the problem with AoB, it’s f*cking Edel that is screwing things up. Everyone in the AoB camp has always been pretty pleased with the way Mega has handled things. Since Edel and Mega merged, it has all gone to hell. I guess a few months back, a bunch of a**holes from Edel just came in and invaded Mega’s Copenhagen office and things haven’t been the same since.

I think Rox, AoB and some other promissing European acts should consider forming their own record/promotion company. Yes, it’s a lot of work but at least they wouldn’t have to bend over for the freaking record companies!

I don’t think you really know what you’re talking about. Aob are with edel only in scandinavia and it seems like mega just wants to coordinate a worldwide release to avoid imports which is good for national sales...
