A songwriters nightmare has happened to me...

Hey people,

I’m a songwriter who’s going to be a singer too and just began with home recordings for my next album.
(all still private, nothing commercial)

I have a song that’s very important to me and for my next album, and just yesterday I heard a song in a record store that has exactly the same melody and chords as the first part of the verses of my song. I could swear I never heard that song before, and it’s sung by a VERY worldfamous artist.

I can’t really change my song, because it’s completely balanced out and every change would destroy the song. Even if it’s only 1/4 of the whole song substance... it’s an essential part, without that the song can’t live actually. A bit like the verses of Vulnerable (stylewise), but that’s not the song that it’s equal with.

I am totally down now... I am afraid I have to leave the song in the dustbin, and it’s like throwing a part of my heart away.
Are here maybe other songwriters that know how I feel? Per maybe? :( Any others?

why should you change it, if you don’t sell it?

Well, it’s your song, and it’s precious to you, so don’t throw it away...it would be a waste of your talent.

yes, i think it too, don’t worry too much.
i think that like you said, it isn’t anything as comercial, you can keep it and do your album peaceful.

Record it anyway, put it on your album, and if people turn round and say ’You’ve ripped off worldfamousartist’, you can turn round and say ’Ahem, mine was first’, and prove it. This is why I date and sign everything...

Same thing happen to me! Not with a song, but with the story I wrote. The sooner I finished writing, I watch a movie that had the same plot with it, I was disappointed, because I’m afraid people will think I copied that from the movie. Then, I realized it’s not use to be disappointed, at least for me, it’s all about fun in writing.
So, I suggest you to keep that, as long you know that you never copied anyone’s else work. Besides, there are so many in songs in the world that similiar to each other, but doesn’t mean they copy each other. For example, when I heard Sleeping In My Car, the chorus is similiar with the an Indonesian song that I knew, but I KNOW roxette didn’t copy that from them, because how the hell Roxette knew about them, and I know they didn’t copy from Roxette either, because the song was release years before Sleeping In My Car.
Maybe oneday, if you decide to ever release that song for public, maybe you can change the arrangement just a little bit, but for now just have fun! :)

hehe thanks so much for now....
interesting story with your book!! :(
Well I had the hope to go semi-commercial (hehe) next year with it... otherwise I wouldn’t be as worried.
But in another forum I posted it and a musician told me that it happens always and that it’s normal as long as it isn’t 100% the same and that even small differences are enough......
maybe I should invite the one I “copied” from to tea ;) And no, it was not Per hehe

And btw, does anyone know Christina Stürmer? Her new song “Nie Genug” reminds me a bit of Sleeping In My Car as well...

mmm...about tea i think it’s a good idea :)

It’s not a book actually, just one short story :). Well, then if the melody you have wasn’t really 100% the same with the song you heard, just keep it and don’t change it! Good luck! ;)

was maybe 97% the same ;)

I’d say drop it. I’ve had that feeling, it’s horrible, but you don’t want problems and you don’t want to remind people of someone else. You gotta be yourself, you gotta be original enough. I know how difficult is to do but you gotta learn to be stronger than the songs you compose :(
But of course it all depends... is it someone famous enough?

By the way, it has happened to me not only in music. Lately I got to see for the first time the logo of “Discovery Atlas”, the one with the bow. I happen to be making documentaries as well and they’re on earth science... Sadly, the logo I made already 10 months ago for my “label” was not registered so long ago and features a very similar bow to the one of Discovery Atlas, as you can see here: http://www.zemia.eu/
It just sucks when this happens!!! :(((((

ahh yeah.. I see :-/

Well, yes... it’s a VERY famous artist.
One of the biggest sellers on this planet and his career is now in the 4th decade as far as I know.
But now I found 2 other songs that it’s quite similar too... so maybe it’s such a commonly used pattern... :/
