I always thought it was a very strange move by EMI as do alot of fans i think why TCOTH wasnt released world wide to support the room service album.
This may have a small clue ?

“Record company EMI didnt want to release the single at end of the day ,they wanted to release ’Milk and toast and honey’ from ”[[Room Service (Roxette album)|Room Service]]” as the first single, as they said [[Roxette]] are more known for there ballads, [[Roxette]] disagreed. So in the end EMI released no lead single to support the album. which explains why the album didnt go on to do as well as everyone thought it would. Then EMI new this mistake would hamper the success of the album and tried to amend it which failed.”
I personally always thought it was stange EMI wouldnt release a single until MATAH was due to be filmed and released in alot of places. I suspected Per and Marie wanted one thing and the record company another. I just thought it was interesting, as per could of got p*ssed off and put it on himself ! lol I thought a double a-side single would of been released in the uk at the time me thats why they was no single release.

Absolutely
In fact, it’s not only the record companies that shares that vision that Roxette are most known and most sucessfull with their ballads. Also a considerable number of people from the general audiece claim to enjoy the ballads rathen than the more upbeat songs.
In Portugal for instance, turn on the radio and don’t be surprised to find songs like WICF or Vulnerable, LTYH or even IMHBL and ATAY as often as the latest Timberlake or Beyonce’s single releases. These are the songs that made the audience buy the records in the first place. In fact i also believe that EMI might be strongly influenced by these local situations cause Portugal ain’t the only place to have this “ballad preference” thing. MTH also became another loved airplayed song in 2001 here as well despiste the also huge airplay of the TCOTH... people seemed to be more touched by the ballad itself.
Songs like The Look or Joyride create attention during the time they were out but repeting the trick with other uptempos might not work out anymore as these 2 did back then. Somehow Roxette ballads seem to crave a territory of their own that no uptempo songs will gain on the same level.

i think emi cant really be picked on, they have a bottom line to watch out for, if matah sold twice as much as tcoth thats what they figured was right, I think they also didn’t think another song from HAND would do that well, as I have said before emi is great in dealing with local markets but worldwide they really fuck up alot. But what bothers me is after 2 contract negotiations how is it per and marie never secured the right to pick thier own single?
