milk and toast and honey VS anyone

So which one do you think is better of these two ballads? I don’t know but I always thought they are somehow very similar to one another.
At the moment I am very much in favour of Anyone, was just listening to the maxi-single today. Maybe it’s because MATAH gets heavy airplay here in Finland it gets a little annoying. And Marie’s vocals are a bit too soft, imo. Almost a little whiny. (Sorry!)
Though airplay- and sales-wise MATAH is featured on the new collection I must disagree with the Rox camp and say that rather Anyone would have deserved its place on Roxette Hits (in my books, it’s a “greater Rox-song” than Milk”). Like the sleeve notes on TBH suggest, it’s gained strange momentum over the years.
But what do you think?
ncurran said on September 6, 2006 20:14:
Anyone. MATAH is a nice enough song, but it doesnt really...take off.
Something that Roxette really missed in their later years was the power ballads which were kind of their trademark in the early days. They did it again with “Breathe” which is one of their best songs in my opinion. A shame it didnt make it as a single...i liked it much better than ATAY which was more laid back and delicate like MATAH

Damn, I forgot about Breathe! Yes, that is another awesome song. It bugs the hell out of me that there are so many Roxette songs that could have easily hit the charts here in America but, of course, EMI is the blame! Anyway, or should I say, Anyone?

I don´t like Anyone so much, MATAH is better but I relly missed old dark orchestral ballads like Wish I Could Fly, Queen Of Rain, Listen To Your Heart or You Don´t Understand Me.
BTW: Breathe is one of Rox best ballads, great mellody, Marie´s excellent voice, one of my favourite.

Milky, by far... :p
Besides it’s probably the one of the few positive ballads Roxette has ever made, so... way to go!! Nice for a change :D

Anyone. Milk... has never been one of my favourites. Besides, I’ve always liked sad songs and ballads :)

’Milky, by far... :p’
ROFLMAO- never heard it called that before
I’m an Anyone fan meself
marcusvandeursen said on September 6, 2006 22:31:
MATAH for sure. It’s in my top 3 of Roxette ballads
rox-kuryliw said on September 6, 2006 23:00:
anyone for me, more deep and dark.
2 different ballads hard to compare,
1 happy
2 other sad .
roxtexanet said on September 6, 2006 23:16:
Both are amazing songs, but I’d hand the title to “MATAH” - it’s just so simple and creates such a warm atmosphere. “Anyone” has some of the best Roxette lyrics ever though, in my opinion...

I was walking back to college from the other side of the city, I couldn’t afford the bus fare, so I had to walk in the pouring rain. I was completely drenched, and my CD player started playing MATAH. When it came on I started to smile, really big Cheshire Cat grin, and by the time I got back to college it was bright, sunny and so hot my clothes were steaming, and I was one happy bunny.
Oh crap, too close to call now I’ve remembered that! I know I said my favourites Anyone, but now I’m not sure

think i heard on a raido station that anyone was going to be bigger the imhbl, it should have been. great song

i really dont like anyone!! one of my least favourite roxette songs ever...
Milk is a nice song... just wish it wud of taken off a bit more.. it seems a bit plain ...
regn said on September 7, 2006 11:31:
Both are too repetitive & a little boring but anyway Anyone gets my vote
* I hate those “here it comes” on Milk...*
chrisjankunas said on September 7, 2006 11:35:
Anyone I think is a better song. Milk Toast And Honey is ok but I think a little too laid back ! Personally I would have replaced Stars with Anyone on the new GH - but that’s just me !
Wicf said on September 7, 2006 16:02:
Both are quite good, but I vote for MATAH...
btw I dont like Breathe very much, dunno why. Best Roxette ballad is LTYH. It’s a power ROCK ballad, maybe one of the best songs ever made :P
ncurran said on September 7, 2006 16:16:
Dont like Breathe? One of the best songs theyve recorded in years IMO. Still i suppose its different strokes for different folks.
And although i did vote for Anyone, i do have to agree with those who have mention MATAH as a feel good song. I can remember a couple of times playing it on my ipod outside on a nice summer’s day with the sun shining and it is a really uplifting song.
Wicf said on September 7, 2006 16:43:
Well I do like Breathe, but not very much :) It’s the weakest song on TBH, after Almost Unreal. Most fans seem to love it but I just don’t know what’s so special about this song. ATAY is much better. But on the other hand, if Breathe had been released as a single it would’ve performed better than ATAY, I think.

Even though Marie vocals on Anyone are incredible I prefer Milk And Toast And Honey. It is one of the sweetest Roxette’s songs. I really like it.
Rox_Nox2003 said on September 7, 2006 21:01:
I am not a big fan of both but never minded about the either .. just let them be played around the house. They aren’t that similar to me somehow... Anyone has this sad melancolic melody in a crash boom bang sort of backing track with lots of instruments while MTH is a more studio produced ... and with a much more lightening happuier and serene melody...
However even though I am from Portugal I prefer the MTH video ... like the light and the setting fitted the songs perfectly...
fridapeeples said on September 8, 2006 00:01:
“Anyone” gets my vote too (though it took a while for me to get into it)
I have to also say that I never really got “Breathe” either. “A Thing About You” was awesome and I don’t usually dig Per on ballads. “Breathe” kind of let me down as it was Marie’s new song and I was hoping for something...i don’t know...awesome? lol
@ncurran - “different strokes for different folks”
i agree (and thank god for that!) :)
tavo said on September 8, 2006 14:54:
anyone is much better than milk. the latter is just boring, i don´t feel anything when i listen to it. as a matter of fact, i usually skip it. but anyone is great, the video is shocking too. and anyone was going to be the first single from hand. did you know that? i think many people hate this song because it took the place of coy, which was going to be the second single after wicf. i hated it too at the beginning. but it´s a great song. i can´t say the same regarding milk.
Rox_Nox2003 said on September 8, 2006 15:50:
After all these years people finally gave “Anyone” the credit it deserved.
And thinking that because of this song all the traditional roxfan-complaning daily party (lol) started LOL.
Wicf said on September 8, 2006 16:50:
Yeah, Anyone was initially planned to be the first single, but it sounded too Roxette-ish for a comeback single. I wrote something like that in wikipedia :P
btw I don’t think it was a good idea to release it as a single, altough the song is great. It was a flop in Europe. It did better in South America, though
IV_ROX said on September 8, 2006 17:43:
And what about MW, ML, ML in my opinion one of the greatest Rox songs ever! Far better than Milk, but again it carries a different emotion. As for the answer to your question, I prefer Anyone over MATAH.

I agree with you about My World, My Love, My Love. Just fantastic.
coyboyusa said on September 10, 2006 15:18:
milk makes me smile cause it has a sunny simplness to it, but anyone is drmamtic once you get over the shrill string into...the should have kept the double piano in the video version so the strings weren’t so shocking.....
i really do think that if marie had not gotten sick by the time the compilations came out breathe would have been an international number one for them its by far one of their best ballads....even if they didn’t put real strings in it...it kinda reminds me a bit of do you get excited for some reason
verano said on September 10, 2006 23:18:
Anyone is a little better. But in fact I prefer Per’s demo version of both songs. His deep voice suites those ballads even better than Marie. These should’ve been released with Per’s lead vocal.
Compare the Anyone single and the demo ... no doubt. The released version is too glossy and slick. The demo has more soul, and even better backing vocals in the chorus.
roxtexanet said on September 10, 2006 23:44:
I *LOVE* “MW,ML,ML” and have always thought it to be one of Rox’s best ballads. “Breathe” is fantastic as well, as is “ATAY”... if it is in fact a ballad, I’m hoping “Reveal” keeps up the LONG tradition of flawless Roxette ballads...
roxettevsoasis said on September 6, 2006 20:06:
I would have to go with Anyone. That explosion of instruments in the beginning is awesome (if you have surround-sound its even greater!) Milk and Toast And Honey reminds me of a childrens bedtime song in a way. Don’t get me wrong, of course it’s a typical Roxette ballad in many ways, but than it’s not. I read an article that Per had that melody and/or lyrics in his head for over 6 months before getting it down. I tell you, I never heard a band with such an influence using orchestral music in my life. The strings are always gorge! My favorite ballad(s) is definetely either Beautiful Things or Wish I Could Fly! I always tell people WICF is Roxette’s “sex-song”. peace
