I just came on also to see if anyone heard.....
I just heard it on the 11am news on Radio 2, I was shocked to say the least.... I use to love watching his shows, although yesterday I was guilty of turning him off TV and saying to myself “Not another repeat”....
Shame he had to die like this as he leaves behind his two young children aged 8 & 2.
RIP Steve....

Was so sad - was really shocked when I heard the news this afternoon - it is sad for his family especially - RIP
ncurran said on September 4, 2006 16:24:
Quite sad and shocking, especially as he has a young family and stuff, but in a strange kind of way it was probably inevitable that this kind of thing would happen eventually
davidc4 said on September 4, 2006 17:08:
i called my mate this afternoon and asked her if she had heard she found it amusing(not in a nasty sense) that he had wrestled with crocodiles and all sorts of dangerous animals and the thing that killed him wasnt even classed as a dangerous animal.......
it was bound to happen but i thought it would have been a crocodile or shark that would have done it......
at least he went out with a bang doing what he enjoyed...better than some people get.
ally77 said on September 4, 2006 17:14:
Yeah in a way at least he died doing something he loved....
I felt quite guilty when I heard as his show came on TV yesterday afternoon and I said to myself, not another repeat of this guy.... and flicked it off, less than 12 hours later he was dead....
harriej said on September 4, 2006 17:18:
I hope his wife and children will be ok.
It is really bad he died, he made a lot of fun at his programmes.
I will miss it.
Rest in Peace, Steve!
davidc4 said on September 4, 2006 17:28:
i wouldnt feel to bad ally77 i never watched him much...he did my head in a bit sometimes.brave bloke tho....credit due and all that.

I am sorry to hear this news. I will remember the family in my thoughts and prayers.
LittleSpooky said on September 4, 2006 18:37:
I have to argue with the “brave” monniker. Idiot would be more like it, especially when he brought his small children into the pen with the crocodiles, etc.
My heart goes out to his family though because it was most certainly unexpected. I always thought some croc would finally go: “Okay! That’s it! I’ve had enough! C’mere lunch meat!”
whateveriam said on September 4, 2006 21:23:
It was a nasty way to go... though I hope painless...
No git believed me at work until I made them listen to the news!
denny said on September 5, 2006 02:01:
@LittleSpooky I would never call him an idiot. He should be respected for what he did - saving wild life and bringing it closer to milions of viewers around the world.
Steve was a very special person. I will miss him. :(
LittleSpooky said on September 5, 2006 02:54:
Denny: When you bring a child, especially a TODDLER into a pen with crocodiles, you’re an idiot in my book. He should have had his children taken from him for that.
plectrum said on September 5, 2006 03:27:
Yes it was a stupid thing to do taking his child into an inclosed pen with a crocodile & we all make mistakes of which we learn by them,we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t make mistakes but i wouldn’t go as far as to say he deserves his children to be taken away from him,he was a loving husband & father who will be sadly missed, how do you tell your kids that your daddy has died & will never see him ever again?my heart goes out to them.
R.I.P STEVE
denny said on September 5, 2006 03:28:
Yeah, ok, it’s your opinion of course. I saw that show, with his baby and I don’t see it the way you do. I know many people judge him because of that but I won’t go into that discussion further because now I don’t think it’s time for that. He’s not alive anymore. :(
ally77 said on September 5, 2006 06:33:
@ LS, there are a lot of people out there that do a far lot worse to there kids that get to keep them.... the whole kid thing was a stunt two years ago of which he apolgise for after he did it, he never relised such small minded people out there would kick up such a fuss over it....
LittleSpooky said on September 5, 2006 13:05:
Never said there aren’t worse parents out there. And it’s considered small minded to think of the safety of kids? Got it.

They’re considering a state funeral.
Also, they filmed him yanking the barb out, apparently...
Majdy said on September 5, 2006 23:48:
I am not a fan, but I know his names and watch his show few times. So sad to hear the news, he was just so full of life and... young :(
Anyway, rest in peace...
Sparvogamarie said on September 6, 2006 04:57:
Actually he wasn’t being stupid swimming with sting rays, there are only 2 recorded deaths from stingrays. They can hurt you with the stinger but not kill you - it was a freak accident that it hit him in the heart. Kind of ironic considering all the dangerous things he did do.
The baby Bob incident is 3 years old already. If you see the footage from the other side, he wasn’t as close to the croc as he seemed, and there were a bunch of guys right next to it ready to jump on it. It also needed to be coiled if it was going to grab the baby. The dude worked with crocs over 30 years, he knew what he was doing. I don’t agree with exploiting a baby like that, but it wasn’t in any danger.
ally77 said on September 6, 2006 07:06:
Well said Marie...
I heard about the State Funeral thing, I actually thought they would do that for him!
I also heard about them recording him trying to pull the barb out...
I mean it’s two days now since it happened, but even I am still sad about it.
shannyn77 said on September 6, 2006 07:18:
He has been offered a state funeral - which we are all happy here in Aus to see happen but his Dad did a news conference today and he kinda inferred that they might not accept the offer. Everyone here is still in soo much shock i think - when u see footage of him it’s really hard to believe he is dead :(
ally77 said on September 6, 2006 07:21:
I just bought Dr Dolittle 2, as I never saw it and didn’t know he was in it till I read about it....
I think people liked him because he made his programmes easy to understand and educational.
ally77 said on September 6, 2006 07:35:
Yeah there is an article on the BBC news website now from the press conference his father did....

Show honour and respect!!!
What ever he’s done, he’s done. Whatever will happen, will happen.
In my country people say “For the death people wheather good or nothing. (at all.)”. He definitely deserves good.
Respect !!!
ally77 said on September 6, 2006 17:35:
I just hope the video of him dying is destroyed when the police have used it for whatever reason, I would hate for that to fall into the wrong hands and find it way on the internet...
Sparvogamarie said on September 7, 2006 03:42:
Unfortunately the family turned down the state funeral. I can understand why they want to have privacy, but at the same time Steve was so loved that it would have been nice to have something all of Australia could be part of. He seemed like a great guy.
denny said on September 7, 2006 05:15:
I am still sad... :( But I keep repeating an old StarTrek sentence: “Death is that state in which one exists only in a memory of another, which is why it is not an end...” I will always remember him.
GT_85 said on September 7, 2006 17:47:
If he didn’t want to have one. Of course it shouldn’t be one.
The tax money can go to some better things.
He was a great entertainer and a big friend of the animals. A good man.
Rest in piece.

They showed an interview with little Bindi yesterday, shot a few weeks ago. She was talking about how important her parents are to her. It was heartbreaking. Poor little kid.
Sparvogamarie said on September 8, 2006 06:58:
They just announced there will be a public memorial in addition to the private one.

@ Sparvogamarie
I read on the BBC news website that they had his funeral already this weekend....
There is a programme on Animal Planet now about his life... it’s been made well, all his best bits, showed him when his daughter was born, he was so proud that day!
whateveriam said on September 10, 2006 20:54:
He’s apparently going to be buried at Australia Zoo if anyone wants to pay their respects.
Ferdan said on September 10, 2006 21:07:
My dad just saw the docu, he told Steve had a pet dog that loved hunting... but got killed by a hunter. He cried a lot and said “At least she died doing what she loved to do. One day we´ll be hunting together again”

Well said Mark.... there ain’t many people that would risk there lives to save some endangered spieces
LittleSpooky said on September 11, 2006 20:56:
I really tried to avoid this topic because I will ALWAYS think Steve Irwin an ass for his antics. I don’t like Jack Hannah much either, but that’s not the point.
Do I have respect for the man for working his damndest to save wild life? Yes.
Do I respect him for bringing a toddler into a croc pen? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I dare each and every one of you here to do the same thing with your kids, or your neices / nephews and tell me you think it’s safe.
I’ve seen animals turn on people WITH NO WARNING. I’ve seen animals tear people apart when that animal was considered “docile”. Excuse me for caring more about a kid than some jackass’s ratings.
Coy: Since you will never have children of your own, you will never understand what it’s like to feel this way. I don’t have kids of my own, but I have 2 neices that I love very much and if their father was as STUPID as Steve Irwin was for doing that, I’d have his butt in a sling so fast, he wouldn’t know what hit him. But, oh... Irwin’s a CELEBRITY so it doesn’t matter. And I don’t give a crap about your “respect”. Your opinion never meant anything to me anyway.
This is the last I have to say on the matter. He has my respect for bringing about public awareness over wild life, but sucked as a father in my book. Plain and simple. You don’t like my opinion? Too bad. I’m allowed to think this way, just as everyone else is allowed to have their opinions.
ally77 said on September 11, 2006 21:46:
Everyone is entitled to there opinion, I’ve said that more than often enough...
denny said on September 12, 2006 00:18:
Ok, my opinion - I think that he was totally under control in there. Anyone else doing that would be stupid, but not him. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was six when he got a python as a present! I don’t see a second on that footage when the baby was in any danger. And even if for some reason croc did attack, Steve would be the one he would attack, not the baby. Plus, I believe there were other people inside as well, ready for any action.
ally77 said on September 21, 2006 19:59:
I see the memorial service was yesterday, they showed his daughter reading what she wrote, god she was so brave to stand up and do that in front of so many people... bless her!
Majdy said on September 22, 2006 01:23:
I just saw on the TV too. Still hard to believe that he’s gone.
ally77 said on September 24, 2006 20:09:
The memorial service is being screened now on Animal Planet, mum told me but she does not have Sky, so I finally worked out how to tape off Sky so she can see it...
It’s already brought tears to my eyes and it’s only been on 10 minutes...
ally77 said on September 24, 2006 20:45:
That did it, pass the tissues..... his daughter Bindi reading out something for her father, god that girl was so brave to that in front of all those people....
ally77 said on September 24, 2006 20:55:
I know..... it’s quite amazing how they pulled off such a service in just a few days.... he was a very much loved person!
