New York State Countryside

Hello. I will have four nights in the New York area in August, but I prefer countryside to cities. I can see that there are state parks with hills and mountains nearby (Bear Mountain for example) but I don’t drive. There is the Adirondack railway with stops like Poughkeepsie and Hudson, but I don’t know where is the best place to go to access some nice countryside. I just wonder whether anyone who knows the area can advise me where to visit by public transport? Thanks, Rich ;-)

There is when you head towards the New York / Pennsylvania border. When people think of New York, they unfortunately think of NYC / Manhattan / Staten Island, etc where the populations are so dense, you can’t throw a rock without hitting 10 people.
I can’t help ya Rich. There used to be a couple of people here that could... but I haven’t seen their names in so long I don’t know if they’re here anymore.

Thanks for your comments CBU & LS. Am still searching the web for tips but it’s hard to find really nice countryside right beside a train or bus stop. I imagine it exists but I’m not having much luck right now. I’ll keep trying!! All the best, Rich ;-)

This is a bit off the question and a bit far... but aren’t the Niagara Falls in the New York State? I mean, there’s nature in that state, even if not nearby the New York City area.
On the other hand, I’ve found this book on Amazon, maybe you should consider it (in the user comments there is someone who talks about getting some of the places described using public transport):

Thanks Santi. Niagara Falls are a little bit far away though, and anyway I went there in 2000 :-) That book looks really nice but probably it’s too late to buy it because I travel in 10 days (and am still waiting for the New York book I ordered on Amazon three weeks ago!). Cheers, Rich ;-)

Maybe you can buy it when you’re there then! :D
It seems to be part of a series dedicated to many major cities around the States, so I’m nearly sure you can find it in regular offline (good) bookstores.
