The 100 best selling records... but no Roxette?

Hello people:
Here in Argentina they have released a serie of pocket books, entitled “Los 100 discos mas vendidos de los...” (100 best selling records of the...). There are 4 volumes, one for each decade: 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Of course, the first one I wanted to check was the one for the 90’s.

I was pretty sure Roxette had to be there, at least for “Joyride”. In the last places (#100 to #90) I found records with 4/5 million copies sold. After this, I supossed “Joyride” would appear, more or less, in the middle of the book. But no, what a big disappointment. Roxette is not mentioned at all. I did check the index but they were not included. The “Pretty Woman” soundtrack was not included either. Same for “Look Sharp” (in the volume for the 80’s).
I think that’s pretty unfair, specially if you know Ace of Base’s “The Sign” was included. Maybe I am wrong, but I guess “Joyride” was better known and sold more copies the “The Sign” (in my opinion, a rather mediocre album). In addition, if records that sold 4.5 million copies were included, I wonder why “Joyride” is not there too. No need to mention I found loads of unknown artistas in that book (I guess many of them are just “one hit wonders”).
In the store they also have a big book entitled “1001 discos que hay que escuchar antes de morir” (“1001 records you have to listen to before dying”).

There was only one copy, but as it was still sealed I was not able to check if Roxette is mentioned there or not. I will visit another store (of the same company) soon, so I will let you know.
I’d like to know your opinion.

I’ve checked the book again today. It says it is based on American and British sales. Anyway, I think “Look Sharp!” (with 2 American #1 singles), the “Pretty Woman” soundtrack and “Joyride” have sold enough in the States to appear in that book. I think the soundtrak have sold 9 million copies (more or less).
Regarding the other book (“1001 discos...”) I ckecked it too. But as I already supposed, Roxette is not there. However, they reccomend Cyndi Lauper’s “She’s So Unusual” as record you have to listen to before dying... Well, I like that record, very 80’s. But if compared with “Joyride”, I think Roxette wins (best ballads, at least).

Yeah they had the 500 best selling records in the Rolling Stone - not ONE Roxette mention out of 500. The Beatles got about 12 along with Joni Mitchell and the Stones, but Rox couldn’t even get one.

The german Rolling Stone magazine had a Top100 with the best albums ever some years ago. So the list was about quality and importance, not sales. Look Sharp got to #99 because it leaded the fading 80s into the 90s with it’s fresh sound. Was nice to read from music critics!
Roxette never sold so much albums in the US. Over there it was only the singles topping the charts.

ace of bases The Sign AKA Happy Nation sold over 25 million copies and is alot better known than the joyride album.Though i do see ur point as Joyride has sold between 10 and 12 million so it should be somewhere in there.they get ignored so we shud be used to it by now

I didn’t know such a piece of shit like “The sign” sold 25 million. I like some songs, but 80% of that album are fillers! (and awful fillers, by the way).

I agree R_s - v.v.v.tacky! After all, the book is american. - (wot more can u say!?!)

Ok, so if you agree that the book is based on the American sales it’s no wonder Roxette isn’t there. Both Joyride & Look Sharp! “only” sold platinum (1 million units) in the States, whereas Ace Of Base’s The Sign achieved NINE times platinum.
Besides it doesn’t seem to be that hard to achieve platinum status in America if you look at the Billboard charts...

The thing is, they don’t always base those things on sales. For example, did you know Jimi Hendrix was actually a one hit wonder? He only had one big hit in the charts, yet is known as one of the greatest of all time. I’m sure Rox have sold more than many of the artists on those supposed “greatest” lists, but unfortunately they are not remembered as a band who made any kind of impact. Nobody even remembers them very well....I hear a lot of, “Oh Roxette, she sang a song on Pretty Woman, didn’t she?” or the other day a guy said “The lead singer of Roxette is great. Her name’s Annie....Annie Lennox, isn’t it?”

joyride tanked internationally soon as they went on tour and stopped promoting the album

the book seemed to be written by foreign people ( Dan Auty / Justin Cawthorne), maybe this book is based on the american market.
