I just have one doubt about the World Cup. Will Spain be eliminated in the Quarterfinals, or before :P
I think this year it will be before, because you see what they did in the last WCs... :
1978 - Round 1
1982 - Round 2
1986 - Quarterfinals
1990 - R2
1994 - QF
1998 - R1
2002 - QF
So obviously
2006 - either R1 or R2 :DDD
I think a European team will win. It’s that European teams win here, and American teams do everywhere else. The only time an American team won in Europe was Brazil in Sweden 1958... :P

And i think Portugal it’s going to do it really good this year! The team has great players and they are very motivated!
last World cup was really a shame for us:(
So i hope we get to the final :P
harriej said on May 26, 2006 22:11:
I hope Brazil and germany will be kicket out soon.
Brazil is always lucky with off-side goals and i must admit they have a good team this year.
Germany.... well for the Dutch the tournament is good when the Germans are out.
I fear Italy the most.
They are the only team that beat The Netherlands in the last 2 year (since Marco van Basten is our national coach). And it was a clear defeat: 1-3 at home!
Santi said on May 27, 2006 10:38:
I wish The Netherlands win it. They always play the best football, they deserve to win at least once!!
It would be nice a Germany - Netherlands final in which The Netherlands win :P Revenge! :P
Debora said on May 27, 2006 19:49:
I ’d like Argentina win the cup, but, if I have to say the truth, I don’t trust very much on the team. We’ve got very good players as Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez or Román Riquelme, but I don’t like the team’s way of playing.
On the other hand, if Brazil is on the tournament, we already know that it will be on the final, so there’s only a place to fight for. Of course, as an Argentinian person, I want someone kick them off as soon as possible!
The Netherlands and England have very good teams this time. I think they will be in the top 4 of Germany ’06.
natasha1 said on May 30, 2006 10:33:

my wife used to paly semi professional until she lost all the cartilage in her knee! ouch!!!

Here in Argentina something really strange happens when talking about the national team. Last Friday (the day Argentina played against Serbia & Montenegro) children didn’t go to school or watched the game at school (actually there’s a kind f law that allow this), people that work in offices stoped working to watch the game, even doctors at public hospitals didn’t go to work (what I think is really bad), cafés were full of people and shops that sell TVs were full of people watching the match.
Does something like this happen in others counties?
lonely_girl said on June 19, 2006 19:27:
today the streets were pretty empty but all the restaurants were crowded. I heard that some employers allowed their staff to watch Switzerland vs Togo but they won’t get paid for those 2 hours. Our lecturer even allowed us to leave before 3 pm because of the match - he wanted to see it too ;)

@ Arnie: I agree with you. 2:1 (Argentina:Netherlands) would be my prediction too. I’m sure Diego Maradonna will be very happy and enjoy watching the game as he did the last two matches :-)
Santi said on June 22, 2006 14:55:
I’m watching USA - Ghana and I just can’t believe my eyes...
What is the hidden interest in making Ghana come to the 16 round? Because the refereeing couldn’t be worse... or better.
3 handballs without a card (two of them not even foul, one of them even led to a strike), a clearly faked penalty, a foul in the first goal for Ghana that almost injured Reyna.
This is incredible. But you can’t win against 11 plus 5 referees. You just can’t...
And I thought Markus Merk was a good referee... I guess marketing for African football is just a higher priority for FIFA now that the next World Cup will be in South Africa.
Roxrider_USA said on June 23, 2006 03:43:
Hey!
It’s so good to see Brazil playing how only Brazil can play!!
Whoever really likes soccer, and watched the Japan x Brazil game, was for sure delighted with the reapperance of the Jogo Bonito!! :-)
Take care!
Carlos E., New York.
Room_service said on June 23, 2006 04:19:
Brazil didn’t impress me much by now. But anyway, it was Japan! That team is not much strong... I think Australia and Ecuador were much impressing than Brazil.
Santi said on June 23, 2006 07:29:
Yes, it seems that the “jogo bonito” only shows up when they play 3rd division Swiss teams and Japan, because against the most serious rivals in the group, Australia and Croatia, Brasil didn’t do it “bonito”, it was merely effective.
However, how cool is to see Australia in the next round. They’re playing great and they are very brave, always attacking. Every game is a final for them and they fight till the end. That’s the way football should be, not like other teams that despite being superior, once they have a goal the only thing they do is defend it 8-)
And talking again about refereeing in the World Cup. On this match, Australia - Croatia, I saw the referee Graham Poll booking a Croatian player three times!! :O
RobS said on June 23, 2006 07:50:
YAY!! Australia made it to the second round!!!
Nailbiting match!!
Quite amazing though, with the goal that the keeper virtually let Croatia have and the ref almost losing it towards the end. 3 yellow cards before Simunic was off the field :-o
Roxrider_USA said on June 23, 2006 15:08:
@Room_Service: Thanks for the feedback. However, how can Australia be more impressing if they lost to Brazil 2 x 0? I really believe that being impressive is getting the results that will give you 3 points.
@Santi: I disagree. In last years Confederations Cup, Brazil beat Germany 3x2 and Argentina 4 x 1 and won the cup. Unless you really believe that those national teams are considered “3rd division swiss teams”, you could be right. Ask the Germans and Argentinians with they think their national teams are “3rd division swiss teams”.
Anyway, now there are 4 more steps to climb. Hopefully, Brazil will be in its 4 straight World Cup final and get that, once again, unprecidented, 6th World Cup title. ;-)
Good lucky for all you cheering for your respective national teams.
Take care!
Carlos E., New York.
Santi said on June 23, 2006 16:10:
I’m talking about this month, not past years. Czech Republic was great in the Euro 2004 and in the qualifiers but you see, they’re out now. This month the team didn’t work.
The same goes about Croatia. It was a great team in the past.
As far as I know, while most national teams were playing other national teams, Brazil was playing 3rd divsion teams in Switzerland, that’s what my remark is about. And they won all their games in the world cup, but only showed what they can really do against Japan. No offense, but Asian football is much weaker than football from anywhere else (unless the refereeing commision considers is good marketing to bring Korea or some other to the semifinals... ehem...).
That’s what my remark is about and nothing else. I don’t see Confederations Cups. i see the World Cup and so far Brazil sucks big time and they don’t really deserve to have been first in the group... but to be true, the rest of the teams in the group are even worse. Well, thumbs up to Australia anyway.
In any case, the same goes for Spain. It wasn’t a serious group. Let’s see now in the play offs what they are really made of.
Roxrider_USA said on June 23, 2006 17:19:
@Santi: It’s always a pleasure to talk and discuss with you.
Good luck for Spain. And if both Brazil and Spain advance to the quater-finals, they will play each other. That would be a nice game!! :-)
Take care!

I worked in the Fan Camp today, it was great to be in direct contact with the fans. And I noticed how my Spanish went to pieces... *sniff*
Debora said on June 23, 2006 18:38:
Well... let’s see. Brazil has defeated Japan 4 - 1, no one can say the opposite. But, does that result mean that they are playing excellent? I don’t think so. Playing excellent has nothing to do with a lot of goals. Scored 4 times against a weak team like Japan is not the big thing. But, of course, we are talking about Brazil and every thing Brazil does is excellent... even more when Ronaldo scored twice in the same match! But against Australia and Croatia, stronger teams than Japan, they couldn’t show their qualities. Where was its “jogo bonito” against them?
In the same way I say this about Brazil, I think that the 6 goals Argentina scored against Serbia & Montenegro mean nothing. But of course, before that match no one had thought that my country could have a chance. Now many people think that Argentina could reach the final... and why? Because they scored 6 times against a team that after the 2nd goal said enough. Even the most important think, and this is my personal opinion, in a short tournament like a worldcup is the result, a lot of goals in the same match means nothing
Roxrider_USA said on June 23, 2006 22:16:
@Debora: Then, hopefully our national teams will meet up in the final match!!
Can you imagine an Argentina x Brazil final in Europe? Awesome!!!!! :-) Pure magic!!!

Room_service said on June 23, 2006 23:26:
I don’t mind. There are more important things in life than a stupid football cup. This is all business, money. Do you believe they organize this Cup just for the sport? NO, they do it because it means a lot of money. And we are the fools, arguing who’s better while they are living “the good life”. Wake up, people. I’d like to see people waving their flags in their national day. Or people traveling abroad to help other people (after an earthquake or something like that), insted of watching a game. Just my opinion.
Roxrider_USA said on June 24, 2006 03:13:
@Room_service: I don’t agree with you. Of course the World Cup happens because of the spirit of sport and competition. But of course, with anything nowadays, money has to be part of it the event.
And if you think we are fools to be talking about or watching soccer just because we give fame and money to the players and in the process make them rich and live the good life, then i guess we gotta stop watching anything on TV all together as well as stop buying Roxette and related music. For, if we follow your line of thought, we are also making Per and Marie live the good life because we keep on buying their music and going to their concerts. Don’t you think your thoughts are little misplaced concerning your statements?
Besides, the soccer players are not getting your money or attention just by doing nothing with their lives. They are actually working. Yes, playing soccer is a job. It’s a career just as modeling and singing is. So, soccer players, models and even Per and Marie worked and work for the money, fame, attention and the good life they have. All of them have earned their “good life”.
Think about it, then drop me a line talking about what you think. :-)
Take care!
Have a good day!

Yes, this is all business and money, but for us, the ones who are out of the business and love football is fantastic. And, on the other hand, everything in life is about money. You need money to pay the food you eat, the place you live in, the clothes you wear, the music you listen...

So sad that the Aussie’s had to lose in such a way, especially when they were playing so well. Excellent posession and some decent shots at goal, only to lose to a penalty that shouldn’t have been.
I would’ve loved to have seen them play through extra time.
Either way, Australia is very proud of the way they played, and how far they got. I don’t think many people expected that much from them.
Santi said on June 27, 2006 14:18:

In between Spain and France, in the Pyrenees. It’s the “country of the pyrenees”, without taxes and with lots of duty free shops, nice hiking trails in the summer and wonderful ski tracks in the winter.
185 km north from Barcelona in Spain, 196 km south from Toulouse in France.
Come to Andorra, you won’t regret! :)
LoneGunman said on June 27, 2006 19:10:
@ Santi - I mean in the World Cup ! Probably playing a real “jogo bonito”, right ? :)
Santi said on June 27, 2006 20:00:
At least they don’t make Nike advertisements showing off things they can’t really do. Obviously Photoshop and 3DStudio helps them a lot, LOL :D
By the way, the smallest country in the World Cup has
a population of 1,305,000.
Andorra has 69,150
Last census of Brazil, it had 169,799,170.
That means there are nearly 2500 times more people (and potentially good football players) in Brazil than in Andorra.
There are nearly 19 times more people in T&T than in Andorra.
Teams like Andorra never qualify, but seen in this perspective maybe you should be ashamed that the only time Andorra has played Brazil (yes, they did play( the result was a mere 1 - 3 in favour for the “jogo bonito”.
Roxrider_USA said on June 27, 2006 20:58:
@Santi: France has been playing horribly and they still went though. Remember, results matter more than anything. And when you add to it a little bit of flare, then you advance in the world cup.
Not all teams can advance as its the case with Spain. However, Spain showed some moments of nice soccer.
Really happy that Brazil is still going.
Take care!
Carlos E., New York.
Santi said on June 27, 2006 21:05:
Yes, but they sell off “jogo bonito” and I don’t see any. That’s why I complain. They are just as vulgar as Italy, and still we wait for a show in each of their games, which we only get from the opposing team 8-)
Roxrider_USA said on June 27, 2006 21:17:

I have problems with you Southamericans believing yourselves superior in football all the time, telling that you play it so much better. Sorry to tell, but neither Argentina nor Brazil have done anything impressing but an ok game against a team whose cartoons play better than the real players (that reminds me of Brazil advertisements :D) and Argentina against another national team of a country that doesn’t even exist and fell apart after losing the first game.
Nothing really impressive, as I say.
For me, so far, the best football has been played by Germany, and Spain. Spain is out, hope the good football of Klinsmann takes them to the cup because they deserve it more than any other.
miss-misery said on June 27, 2006 21:47:
Bye bye Spain :’(
Jugamos como nunca y perdimos como siempre
(We played best than ever and we lost as usual: typical Spanish sentence to describe the team that never wins anything. Spain is a very typical example)
Please Brazil, defeat those French guys. I will be more than happy watching Zidane’s retirement. I was expecting to see today, but...
miss-misery said on June 27, 2006 22:09:
Me anything against Zidane?? hahaha
YES, A LOT!!!
Today, for example, being French. In the last few years, playing with Real Madrid :)
Seriously, today I wanted to see Zidane’s last match because this would mean that Spain would have won, but...
By the way, I think is a huge lack of respect from the Spanish press saying that we were going to retire Zidane in big letters, as a newspaper did.
I’m hearing in the radio that Zidane doesn’t want to talk to the Spanish press, no wonder why. But it’s Spanish press, not respecting the rivals, as usual.
P.S. Real Madrid supporters and French people, please, dont take it personal ;)

@Santi: I’m not really showing off. I’m just expressing the facts backed by history.
Brazil is a south american team, right?
So:
Brazil has won the world cup 5 times;
Has never been left out of a world cup;
Has been in the last 3 world cup finals (1994, 1998 and 2002).
Has won 2 of the 3 consecutive finals.
Is the only one to have won a world cup in Europe,
And in the last 2 years, have won all the international competitions (Copa America and Confederations Cup).
The closest national teams to Brazil concerning World Cup titles are Ger many and Italy both with 3 titles. Two behind Brazil.
And one more fact to reinforce what i’m writing here is:
South America has 9 World Cup titles (5 Brazil, 2 Argentina and 2 Uruguay)
while
Europe has 8 World Cup titles (3 Italy, 3 Germany, 1 England and 1 France).
Therefore, we are not showing off. It’s merely the facts backed by history. And it can’t be denied at all.
Take care!

You wrote: “Sorry to tell, but neither Argentina nor Brazil have done anything impressing but an ok game against a team whose cartoons play better than the real players”
...and I agree with you... even I’m Argentinian. Our team has played only a good match but against a team that was defeated almost before the match started. And Brazil... well, they haven’t faced any good team till now. In these condition it’s easy to play well.
But, for Argentina, the first hard match will be next Friday and I really hope we could win.
Finally, till now, I haven’t seen very good teams, not much nice football, and that has an explanation: the result is more important than the football show. Unfortunatelly...
Roxrider_USA said on June 28, 2006 21:24:
In life, results lead to accomplishments.
I don’t know many people that would rather forgo getting a solid result in order to put on a show that in the end might not lead to the wanted or needed result.
Brazil’s “jogo bonito” was evident against Japan. It really doesn’t matter with the opposing teams are strong or weak. However, in the game against Japan, i can tell you that the 4 substitutes that played for the 4 regulars that stayed in the bench, made all the difference and made Brazil’s flare and game flow much more easily.
On the other games until now, Brazil showed a regular soccer that gets the job done and brings us the wins or results.
So now on saturday, Brazil will play France. Now, if Brazil beats France with a regualr soccer display, then what will you tell me? That France is not a strong or good team ?
Think about it!
Take care!

Well, we are out... next time will be.
I’m happy because for Germany it wasn’t as easy as they had thought. I think Argentina played well, but... well, penalties are pure luck.
Kiwein1 said on June 30, 2006 18:30:
It was a good game. It’s just a pity that Argentina didn’t learn to lose. Bad scenes at the end of such a breathtaking and good game. That really wasn’t necessary.
arnie said on June 30, 2006 18:34:
best luck the next time. Argentina deserved to win. Anyway, wining by penalties depends on luck mostly.
ally77 said on June 30, 2006 18:47:
I agree penalties can always go either way…..
But it was a good match…
Not sure what the hell went off after on the pitch though!
Debora said on June 30, 2006 20:18:
At the end of the match a German player insulted one of the Argentinian players, Ayala, I guess. Then, the stadium security people did the same. At least that is what they said.
I know that that reaction is not correct, but insulting a defeated player it’s wrong as well. I think that the Germans players wanted to ease the weight of the match in the incorect way.
Kiwein1 said on July 1, 2006 06:12:
One argentinian player saw the red card as well. Don’t know who though. Somebody attacked Mertesacker, he’s injured now. That was the first attack I think.
It’s a pity that it had to end like this - no matter who started kicking whom - since the whole World Cup really transports such a good atmosphere.
I think that Italy will win on Tuesday. Their defence is quite good. Hard to make a goal, even for Klose. ;-)
Invisible_man said on July 1, 2006 14:07:

Too bad cuz I really rooted for underdog Ukrainians.... being born there and all. My friends and I would have partied hard if they won
I think Italy will beat Germany as well on Tuesday. Germans can’t get lucky twice lol

I will Gerrard but then that’s because I support LFC, can you support a team and still not like football!
Santi said on July 3, 2006 15:31:
So now there are only four teams. Which do you think will reach the final??
1. Germany - Portugal
2. Germany - France
3. Italy - Portugal
4. Italy - France
???
I think Germany - France will be the final. And I think it’s going to be a great football game :D
I don’t know which one of them would win it.
On Brazil, it seems that when they found a good team they failed, like it was clear it would happen. (The same happened with Spain, both their groups were full of very weak teams)
On England... yes, you can blame Rooney, but until he was sent off, England had done nothing at all. They began playing well after he was off the pitch, Probably the players thought they should play much better to pass it, and since then the game got interesting. It had been booooring up to then. Anyway, curious fact: Lampard was the player who shot most times in the world cup and didn’t score a goal, not even in the penalty shootout!!! :O
Kiwein1 said on July 3, 2006 16:33:
I work as a volunteer in the headquarter of all the fan embassies we have in the cities and I can tell you that the English fans have behaved SUPERB!!! They were friendly, nice and not aggressive. Forget about these 80 ppl they arrested. The atmosphere here in Germany is great and it will last till next sunday. I am sure about it! It was a great World Cup!
Vixzter said on July 3, 2006 20:54:
Kiwein1: Thanks!!! finaly we’re not all being labeled as mindless yobs!
Unfortunatley all anyone ever hears about is if we do something bad, well other countries have problems too its just that gets overlooked cos some pissed up idiots who call themselves England fans can’t handle their beer!
Fact: England were rubbish with or without Rooney, Lampard was awful Gerrard didn’t really do much either Beckham was not his self perhaps he’s past it who knows, god (and Eriksson) onlys knows why Theo Walcott was there!
If Peter Crouch learnt how to jump he might just score a few goals.
I should be feeling gutted as an England fan but I’m not cos I’ve seen all this type of crap before, England are not good enough to be anywhere near the semi finals.
I don’t even know why they ever think they have a chance at penalties cos appart from Owen Hargreaves none of them ever looked like A: they wanted to take a penalty or B: like they were going to score one.
The only plus point for England was that they’re back 4 of Neville, Ferdinand, Terry and Cole looked pretty much ok, Joe Cole did ok although was taken off far too much to be of any real effect, great goal agaisnt Sweden though!
Aaron Lennon.....so much pace but crap end product, you’d think that after a month with David Beckham he’d atleast have learnt how to cross the ball!
And the even more depressing news is....nothing will change with McClaren in charge LOL
So.....
COME ON GERMANY ;-)

I think that in a former post I said something about defeating France and retiring Zidane. Next time I’ll keep my big mouth shut. As Morrissey used to say “Bigmouth strikes again”.
Not very happy about the final, I prefered other teams, but I also think that the other teams didn’t deserve better. I don’t really care about who’s winning anymore.
Santi said on July 6, 2006 00:09:
Zidane said himself that what you’ve just said (and said in the past), that was also said by some major sports Spanish newspapers (read Marca or As...), hurt him so much that he fought twice as hard to beat Spain. That they wanted to retire him but what they have got is that he comes back.
I think Zidane is a great football player and deserves to win. Though I don’t want to see an easy final, I want to see more than two goals and lots of chances for both teams. I want Zidane fighting Gattuso and I want an ugly goal by Inzaghi. I want a sprint between Henry and Cannavaro, I want at least three excellent saves by Buffon and 2 thrillers by Barthez (the way only he can thrill us... LOL :D)
And I’d like to see Trezeguet playing, of course!! :D
So, I want to see everything you could expect from the two best teams in the world in 90 or 120 minutes.
And whoever plays better, let’s hope they win!! :)

Even I said many times that I would never support Italy because Italians offended our national hymn in Italy ’90, now I see I can’t go against my Italian blood, so I want Italy win the final.
But on the other hand, if they win they will have 4 cups and that’s too much, so in this case I want France to win.
I will support Italy but if France defeat them it OK.

But Italy deserved to win. France attacked a lot more, but weren’t able to score. And if it wasn’t for that offsides call, Italy should have won before OT. It was their game.
Also, very unsportsmanlike conduct from Zidane :-(
So disappointing, so disappointing!

It’s such a shame being Spanish those days. I want to be Italian!! PORCA MISERIA!!

What a lame World Cup! Two average (or even less) teams in the final prove that. France was mediocre, and Italy played like animals (remember the match against USA). Then, they invented a penalty in the match against Australia, if favour of Italy. What else can I say? Only Portugal was respectful, and they played very well!
Neither Italy nor France were “fair play”. Booooooo to both of them!!!

Italian team was disaster. They played awfully, and their game was dirty. The insult Zidane got must be something really bad, to react like he did. You don’t react that way for nothing. And in the match vs. USA, the idiot that hit the American player in the face smiled when he got the card. What a bunch of proud idiots... That’s not the behavior I want in a *champion*. They only are some stupids with lucky, but they were not the best in any way.
This Cup was really plain and boring. A total disapointment.
miss-misery said on July 11, 2006 14:05:
Room-service, I think the Italian player called Zidane “terrorist”. This is awful, of course, but it doesn’t justify what he did. He’s supposed to be a professional, and don’t forget he earns lots of money.
And about the quality of the whole world cup... I guess that football is becoming more a business than a game, and this influences the game itself. That’s life, I guess.
ally77 said on July 11, 2006 16:58:
No matter what he was called, the best thing would be to walk away, it hardly shows a good example!
Jud (moderator) said on July 11, 2006 18:36:
indeed, I think he should have known better how to react to whatever the Italian told him. One would expect from such a professional he is supposed to be, to be able to ignore such comments, everybody knows this is part of football, insulting is part of it, and one has to know how not to react. He didn’t only damaged himself, Italy won the moment he decided to take that action.
Not to say this is not the first time this guy reacts violent on the field. I must say I never really liked him, now I like him even less. A pity they chose him the best player just because he was retiring.
Oh, and I didn’t like the Australian at all, there were moments I was not sure if they were playing football or rugby :O
Looking forward to the European Cup, which takes place in Switzerland and Austria in 2008 :) I think I’ll try to go to some matches if they are next door :D
Santi said on July 12, 2006 14:19:
LMAO at “Portugal was respectful, and they played very well”...
Yes, sure. Diving every minute and provoking the players of the other team now is called “being respectful and playing very well”. As far as I know, cheating is NOT fair play, and they were all the time trying to cheat... especially Cristiano Ronaldo.
This player sucks, if he tried to finish a play instead of diving all the time, and passing to his teammates instead of diving all the time (did I mention he dives all the time?) he would have scored at least 3 goals in the championship. But he’s the way he is and only scored a penalty...
Does anybody remember how a slight touch in Maniche’s shoulder suddenly became by the grace of theatre a serious injure in the player’s face, that lasted just as long as he was taken out of the field...? Talk about being respectful...
Moreover, they received the “most entertaining team” award. Which is funny, because it can’t be the way they played. I guess it was either the theatre in their actions or the expectations of their Cinderella run. And that’s about it for entertainment. (Let’s remember they scored 2 goals in the whole play-off round. 1 against The Netherlands and 1 after everything was said and done against Germany in the last game. If the show in football is in goals, Portugal was not much of a show.)
