What is Marie's Solo sound?

I have never listened to Marie’s solo career (except for the Change) , partly because it is in swedish but also for lack of money. But I am interested and was wondering if anyone here could be bothered to tell me the ’sound’ of her albums - how it differs to any rox, per stuff etc. I’ve only heard Tro which is very nice. If anyone could do this I’d be grateful. Thanx.

Thanx. I think I’ll do that - and then decide whether I’ll get the Marie BoxSet. Thanx sandyam! :)

Chris... recently got my MF boxset too (had the original CD for years tho) and i must say it was a GREAT buy even if i had the studio albums already! the quality of the sound is so crisp and the bonus tracks are such jewels!! IMHO Efter Stormen is simply brilliant - if you don’t buy the boxset make damn sure that you atleast get THIS album...!! You WILL thank me afterwards!

In any case, Marie’s sound on “The Change” is not at all characteristic of her other albums... they are usually a lot more melancholy and kind of folk-pop, rather than the noisier, jazzier sound we hear on most of “The Change.”

id say marie’s sound is , a live recorded/ raw sound. bluesy and emotional rich.

Marie’s music is a real mix. You hear non-fans saying stuff like it’s depressing, but I don’t think that’s true.
Het Vind is a real 80’s pop rock album, a little Cyndi Lauperish in my opinion. Lots of guitars and some sugary pop too, and some ballads.
Den Sjunde Vågen is a bit slower but still with some rockin tracks, but also very 80’s. It sounds a little dated nowadays though.
Efter Stormen is probably the closest to Roxette’s sound, it’s a very positive album but a little deeper than Roxette. Mostly pop, but not candy pop.
Den Ständiga Resan is an album Marie described as a diary, written during a really hard time in her life. Most Marie fans say it’s her best, non-Marie fans say it’s her most gloomy and depressing. I guess it depends whether you’re into vapid sugar coated pop, or something with a bit of meaning. There’s a mix of styles, some very slow and somber songs, some dancable ones, some pop, and one really cool rock song called Mellan Sommar och Höst.
I en tid som var is a pretty mellow album, slow songs and some bluesy stuff. If you don’t understand the lyrics you would think it sounded a bit sad, but the album is very positive.

Yeah for some reason I’ve never been able to get into Den Sjunde Vågen... yeah there’s some good songs but it just doesn’t ’flow’ as her other albums do...!??

Yeah Purple, I’ve just never liked DSV that much. It sounds out of date to me. I very rarely listen to it. För dom som älskar is quite a nice ballad, and Skyl på mig and DSV title track, but those are about the only three I really like.

Get Antligen and go from there. I loved it when i first got it. It gives a good overview of her career.
I think it’s about time i popped it in the CD player again.
I’ve got to get around to buying the boxset.
purplemedusa said on May 10, 2006 13:04:
Ok, it’s me that doesn’t like GH compilations: BUT I feel that Antligen would actually take away some of the joy of exploring the albums FIRST and then listening to the commercial tracks a little later! Marie’s got such strong albums that I believe they should each be given a good listen before pulling them apart by a compilation... (is it just me or’s Marie’s not really big on singles?) It could perhaps be that because her music is so personal, the albums serve almost as chapter markers in her life.

You are right, she’s not a singles artist. I think the only singles that ever sold (much) were Sparvöga and Efter stormen.
Room_service said on May 10, 2006 18:24:
Tevensso, you are wrong. Her most successful single (to date) was “Tro”. I read that somewhere, I don’t remember exactly when.
I wouldn’t recommend “Efter stormen” to a “nrewbie”, that’s a bit risky. It’s the Marie album I least like, I hardly play it. I am able to remark only two songs from that album: the title track and “Om du såg mej nu”. All the other songs are too slow, acoustic and melancholic, but in a boring way (not like “Den ständiga resan”). The artwork is stunning, but the music is a bit disspointing to me.
If you wanna picture her career as a whole, you should try “Den 7 vågen” and “Den ständiga resan”. There you will find Marie’s both sides: the 80’s and the 90’s. They are very different sides: the 80’s are full of energy and rocky songs, while the 90’s are deeper and more reflective years. Maybe “D7V” is a bit dated (I don’t mind, as I love the 80’s sound), but it’s very pleasant to listen to. Stand outs are the title track, Värdighet, Silver i din hand, Tro på mej and Ett hus vid havet.
“DSR” is a very personal record. Some people consider it a depressing album, but I don’t agree. In fact, it’s not as slow as “Efter stormen”. It includes more uptempo songs like Så stilla, så längsamt; Mellan sömmar och höst, Så länge det lyser mittemot, Vem tror du att du är...

room_sevice. Why do you dislike efter stormen?
Personally its my favorite Marie album and its true that Marie Davis says non fans mostly says that her music is depressing - my mum for example thinks that her songs are full or sorrow and quite depressing.
And although I´m a Marie fan I think DSR can be quite sad, I always listen to it when I´m sad for some reason.
I became a MF fan back in 2000 and the first album I bought was Äntligen but as someone said (purlp?) its more thew single-side of Marie and you dont get into her other songs
My first choice would be Efter Stormen then het vind d7v Dsr.. The album I dislike most and hardly plays is IENTSV

Room_Service you are wrong. “Sparvoga” is Marie’s most successful single to date, it is the only one to reach #1 on the sales chart and one of only two to reach the top 10 of Tracks (#8, on April 1st 1989; the other is “Efter Stormen” which did even better, getting to #4 on Oct. 24, 1987). “Tro” reached #8 on the sales chart (tying it with “2nd Chance,” incidentally) and #12 on Tracks.

It’s hard to be a singles artist when Sweden is not really a singles country. I found singles quite hard to find when I was there, it’s usually a tiny section in the music store. I couldn’t even find Marie’s new singles from the Change, so I don’t think it would be fair to say her singles charted badly when the average Swedish person can’t even *find* them to buy them. I read in one of the Swedish newspapers that singles were on the way out there anyway.
Room_service said on May 11, 2006 02:56:
ATLTK: I explained my reasons above, I skip almost all the songs on “Efter stormen”. I only like Om du såg mej nu, Efter stormen, Längtan and Kaffe och tårar. Most of the rest of the songs are terribly boring... or slow.
Sparvogamarie said on May 11, 2006 04:38:
Oh well it’s different tastes, I prefer Efter to DSV but maybe someone else thinks DSV is better than DSR. Nobody can tell Chris what he will like because he will have his own opinion when he finally hears for himself. For me personally, once I heard Marie’s DSR I was never really a Roxette fan again. I’d rather a new solo album from her over Roxette or Per any day. But other fans have heard her and thought she was boring or crap and become strict Per fans. You’ll make up your own mind Chris, but definitely give her stuff a chance cos you might love it!

I would describe Marie’s sound as warm and intimate. Her stuff is always very personal and that’s something you can feel and hear.
The “Den Ständiga Resan” album has a very sad and melancholic sound as it tells the story of hard times and sorrow in Marie’s life.
I really like the “Efter Stormen” album. It’s my favourite one at the moment. Though there are some sad songs on this album too, I always get very happy when I listen to for instance “Längtan”,
“Efter Stormen” or “Bara För En Dag”.
I would recommend the “Äntligen” album to you. It’s a compilation of Marie greatest hits. Listening to that album may give you a good impression of her solowork.
